Change the default payment app in Android Settings
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap the Settings search bar and enter NFC.
- Open NFC, then Contactless payments, then Payment default.
- Select the payment app you want Android to use. Google’s instructions illustrate selecting Google Wallet.
- Tap OK or the confirmation control shown on your device.
Google notes that “Steps may differ depending on your device.” If Settings search does not lead to the relevant page, some phones use Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC → Contactless payments. From there, choose the desired payment app.

Payment default selects the app Android hands a contactless transaction to. It does not select which card that app charges. In Google Wallet, the first payment method you add becomes the default card. To change it, open the card you want, tap Details, then choose Make default for tap to pay.

You can also use a different card for a transaction without changing Android’s payment app default: select that card in Wallet before tapping your phone at the reader. See Change your default payment method for Google Wallet’s card instructions.

Choosing a default app is only one part of setup. Google lists these requirements for contactless payments:

- NFC support on the phone, with NFC switched on.
- A supported contactless payment method that has been added and, if required, verified.
- A screen lock.
- A device that meets Google’s security and software requirements.
- A supported country and payment method.
Google Wallet has additional app-specific requirements: its current download guidance specifies Android 9 or later and asks users to keep Google Play Services and Wallet up to date. Google says Wallet does not work on rooted devices and does not support work profiles. These conditions apply to Google Wallet, not necessarily to every Android payment app. See Google Wallet requirements and Set up Google Wallet.

Check the setup in this order, changing one item at a time so it is easier to identify what is blocking payment:

- Check NFC: confirm that your phone supports NFC and that it is on in Settings.
- Check the app default: return to NFC → Contactless payments → Payment default and confirm the intended app is selected.
- Check the card: make sure a payment card is added and verified. In Wallet, finish any setup requested for a card; if it is suspended, Google says you may need to contact the bank that issued it.
- Check screen lock and device security: set a screen lock and confirm the device meets the relevant security requirements. Google Wallet users can check whether the device is Play Protect certified.
- Update and retry: update Google Wallet and Google Play Services, then hold the phone close to the payment reader for a few extra seconds.
