To set your own photo as an Android wallpaper, open the phone’s wallpaper controls, choose the photo, preview it, select the screen it should appear on, and apply it. On Pixel phones, start by touching and holding an empty area of the Home screen; other Android phones may use different menu names.
Set a photo as wallpaper on a Pixel phone
- On the Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
- Tap Wallpapers & style.
- Tap More wallpapers, then Change wallpaper.
- Tap Choose a photo and select the image saved on your phone. You can also choose a preset wallpaper category and image.
- Preview the wallpaper. If prompted, choose whether to use it on the Lock screen, the Home screen, or both.
- Tap Apply.

The Home screen is the background behind your app icons; the Lock screen appears before you unlock the phone. Depending on the device and the controls shown during setup, you can assign the image to one screen or both. If you want different images, repeat the wallpaper steps and choose the other screen when prompted.

Android wallpaper labels and steps vary by manufacturer and device, so the Pixel path may not match your phone. Google notes that some Android steps vary by device in its Android device guidance. Optional Pixel wallpaper effects
Creative wallpaper features are optional; you do not need them to use a photo from your phone. Google lists these model requirements for its Pixel features:
- AI wallpapers: Pixel 8 and later.
- Emoji wallpapers: Pixel 4a and later.
- Cinematic photo effects: Pixel 6 and later.
- Shape and weather effects: Pixel 9a and later.
