To set a custom screenshot viewport in Chrome, open DevTools, enable the Device toolbar, choose Responsive under Dimensions, and enter the width and height you need. Use Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot to include the page beyond it.
Set a custom width and height in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page you want to capture, then open Chrome DevTools.
- In DevTools, turn on Toggle device toolbar.
- In the Device toolbar, set Dimensions to Responsive.
- Enter the required width and height in the viewport fields. You can also drag the viewport handles to resize it. For example, the Chrome Device Mode guide demonstrates a viewport that is 480 pixels wide and 415 pixels high.
- Open More options in the Device toolbar and select the capture command you need.
Choose the right screenshot command
| Command | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Capture screenshot | The currently visible viewport at the dimensions you set. | You need an image of the page as it appears within the configured viewport. |
| Capture a full size screenshot | The full page, including content outside the visible viewport. | You need the page from top to bottom rather than only the portion currently on screen. |
Save dimensions as a reusable custom device
For dimensions you expect to use repeatedly, create a custom device instead of re-entering the values each time.

- Open the Device toolbar’s device list and choose Edit to open the Devices settings.
- Select Add custom device.
- Enter a device name, width, and height, then save it.
- Select the saved device from the Device toolbar’s Dimensions list when you need it.
Device pixel ratio, user-agent string, and device type are optional fields in the custom-device settings. A custom device saves a configuration for reuse; it does not make Chrome run on physical hardware matching that device.
What the viewport dimensions mean
The width and height fields set the viewport in Device Mode. Do not assume that the resulting screenshot bitmap’s pixel dimensions will always exactly equal those CSS viewport dimensions: the relationship can depend on the capture setup and device pixel ratio.
#1 Best Overall
Chrome’s Device Mode approximates a mobile experience on a desktop or laptop; it is not a substitute for opening and testing the page on an actual mobile device when hardware-specific behavior matters.
