Use a small GStreamer application to sort the files, play them one at a time, and feed their audio and video into a live-output pipeline. playbin can play a local file from an absolute file:// URI, and its about-to-finish signal lets the application queue the next file before the current one ends. GStreamer does not provide a folder-sorting, playlist-managing gst-launch-1.0 command by itself, so a shell pipeline alone is not the complete solution.
The steps below outline the design rather than promise a universal, tested command: the final output graph depends on your GStreamer plugins, the files’ codecs and formats, and the ingest protocol configured for your YouTube event.

How the pieces fit together
There are two distinct jobs: choose and advance through the local videos in a deliberate order, then encode or package their audio and video for YouTube’s configured live ingest. GStreamer’s playbin is a playback abstraction, not a directory scanner or a complete YouTube broadcasting setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Build the playlist in your application. Enumerate the folder, apply an explicit ordering rule, and convert each selected path to an absolute file URI.
- Play the current URI. Set the URI on
playbinand connect itsabout-to-finishsignal so the application can set the next URI. - Build a live output path. Decode the media, prepare the audio and video for the selected ingest settings, then send it using the event’s configured protocol.
- Monitor the pipeline and YouTube event. Handle errors and end-of-stream, and verify stream health before relying on the broadcast.
Make folder order explicit
Do not rely on the order returned by a filesystem directory listing. Choose the rule your channel needs—such as lexicographic filename order, a numbered naming scheme, or a separate playlist—and sort accordingly before playback. With ordinary string sorting, a filename such as video10 can come before video2; use natural numeric sorting or an explicit playlist if that would be wrong.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Keep the resulting ordered paths in application state and convert each path to an absolute file:// URI. The GStreamer playbin documentation requires an absolute URI for its uri property and supports local file URIs. A relative path is not a substitute for that URI.
Advance through the playlist with an application
Connect a handler to playbin’s about-to-finish signal. In the handler, use the current playlist index to assign the next file URI before the playing item ends. This can support a gapless handoff when the media and pipeline permit it; it is not a guarantee that every combination of files will transition without a gap.
Decide what the last item should do. The application can stop the broadcast, restart from the beginning for a loop, or follow another explicit rule. Track the index so that the final-item behavior is deliberate rather than an accidental repeat or a stream that ends unexpectedly.

Also watch GStreamer bus messages. Report errors with enough detail to identify the file or element that failed, and handle end-of-stream according to the playlist policy. GStreamer’s playbin documentation describes bus notifications for errors and end-of-stream; neither message should be ignored in a long-running broadcast.
Build the live output for the selected YouTube ingest
For an RTMP-based event, the documented GStreamer building blocks include H.264 video encoding with x264enc, FLV muxing, and sending the muxed stream with rtmpsink. Conceptually, the path is:
- Decode the selected file’s audio and video streams.
- Convert video or resample audio where needed for the chosen output format.
- Encode video to a format accepted by the event’s YouTube ingest settings; GStreamer’s
x264encencodes raw video as H.264. - Encode audio to a format accepted by those settings.
- Mux audio and video into FLV and send the result to the configured RTMP server using
rtmpsink.
This is a component-level design, not a tested, copy-and-paste pipeline string. The exact graph depends on your source formats and installed GStreamer elements. Check that your installation has the required demuxers, decoders, converters, encoders, muxer, and sink before assembling the application.

Some x264enc settings, including defaults, can add latency because the encoder buffers frames. Tune and validate settings for your use case rather than assuming a low-latency option is automatically best: latency, encoding quality, CPU load, and stability can trade off. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the event’s accepted codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; YouTube’s guidance does not establish numeric RTMP targets that apply to every event.
When files have different formats
A stream-copy or remux path may be possible when files already contain compatible encoded streams. But arbitrary files may differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, timestamps, or audio layout, and GStreamer’s published guidance does not establish that a seamless remuxed playlist will work across those differences. A consistent encode path is a more predictable starting point, but still needs testing with the actual files and installed plugins.
Choose the protocol configured for the YouTube event
Use the ingest protocol and server information configured for the specific live event, and treat the stream key as a secret. YouTube’s Live Streams API describes ingest type and primary or backup stream URLs as stream configuration details. Check the event’s current settings rather than assuming that a URL or protocol from another event applies.

| Ingest route | What to account for |
|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | GStreamer documents an RTMP sink route using an FLV-muxed stream. Match codecs and other encoder settings to YouTube’s current RTMP guidance for the event. |
| HLS | YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range playlist. It also lists supported formats and closed-GOP requirements and says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are HLS requirements, not RTMP pipeline settings. |
These routes are not interchangeable packaging instructions: use the path for the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s ingest configuration and accepted formats can change, so recheck its current guidance for the event before broadcasting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the pipeline before the intended broadcast
- Check local elements. Confirm the installed GStreamer build exposes the source, decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink elements your graph needs. Element availability varies with the installation and version.
- Inspect representative files. Check their codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio channels, and sample rate. Include files from different parts of the folder if the collection is not uniform.
- Exercise playlist transitions. Test the first-to-second handoff, the final item’s behavior, and the selected loop or stop policy. Watch for decode errors and unexpected audio or video changes.
- Validate with YouTube. Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream and inspect stream health or status in YouTube Live Control Room before the intended broadcast. The Live Streams API includes health status that can help diagnose stream problems.
- Keep credentials private. Do not publish or log the stream key where others can use it to broadcast to your event.
Common failures and what to check
- A file will not open: check that the URI is absolute and correctly formed, then verify the required demuxer and decoder are installed and the file itself is readable.
- Files play in the wrong order: check the application’s sorting rule and playlist contents. If names contain numbers, ordinary lexicographic sorting may not match human numeric order.
- Playback stops at a file boundary: confirm the application assigns the next URI in
about-to-finish, updates its playlist index correctly, and handles the final item as intended. Also check bus errors for the next file. - The stream reaches YouTube but is unhealthy: verify that the selected event’s ingest protocol, server information, key, codecs, and output settings match the current YouTube configuration. Do not apply HLS segment rules to an RTMP stream.
- Transitions fail between unlike files: inspect changes in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, and audio layout. Test a consistent encode path instead of assuming stream-copy will handle every combination.
- Latency is higher than expected: review encoder buffering and settings. Changing latency-related options can affect quality, CPU use, and stability, so validate the change with the actual stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or pricing for details. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
Sources and scope
This design draws on the official GStreamer documentation for playbin, its about-to-finish signal, playback components, x264enc, and rtmpsink, plus YouTube’s live ingest, Live Streams API, encoder, and HLS guidance. The exact working graph cannot be specified without the operating system, GStreamer version and plugins, file characteristics, and selected YouTube ingest protocol.
