How to Set a Chromebook Hostname: What You Can Change Today

Google’s general Chromebook settings guide does not document a device-hostname control. Here’s how to check Settings and avoid confusing the ChromeOS name with Linux’s hostname.

Google’s current general Chromebook settings guide does not document a control for changing the ChromeOS device hostname. You can search Settings for “hostname” or “device name,” but if no control appears, the older chrome://flags#enable-hostname-setting instructions are not reliable current guidance. A Chromebook Community reply reported that the flag expired in ChromeOS M135; that is a community report, not an official Google deprecation notice.

First, identify which hostname you mean

A Chromebook can involve two different naming contexts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • ChromeOS device hostname: The name of the Chromebook exposed to a local network. This is the device-level name readers commonly want to change so that it is recognizable on a router or network.
  • Linux environment hostname: A name used inside the Chromebook’s separately configured Linux development environment. Changing or configuring Linux does not rename the ChromeOS device.

Check whether Settings offers a device-name control

  1. Open Settings on the Chromebook.
  2. Use the Settings search field and search for hostname or device name. Google’s Manage Chromebook settings guide explains how to navigate Settings and search; it does not promise that these searches will show a hostname control. The guide also says, “To go to the search bar, you can also press Ctrl + f.”
  3. If no relevant control appears, the general Google settings documentation does not provide another supported device-hostname path. Do not assume that an option is available simply because an older guide describes one.

Why the old Chrome flag instructions may not work

Older advice points to chrome://flags#enable-hostname-setting, an experimental flag whose description was reproduced in a 2023 Chromebook Community answer as enabling users to set the ChromeOS hostname exposed to the local network. That answer cautioned that flags are experimental and can cause issues; it was not an official Google support procedure.

A later Chromebook Community reply reported that the flag had been removed and expired in ChromeOS M135. Treat that as a dated community report rather than an official Google announcement. In practice, the historical flag is not dependable current guidance, and instructions to enable it may no longer match your Chromebook.

If you mean the Linux development environment

Google documents Linux setup separately from ChromeOS device settings. On supported Chromebooks, the setup path is Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers. Follow Google’s Set up Linux on your Chromebook instructions for that environment. A Chromebook Community reply describes penguin as the default Linux environment name; regard that as community-reported, not as a universal guarantee.

Linux setup concerns the Linux environment only. It does not establish a way to change the hostname that ChromeOS exposes for the whole Chromebook.

When to ask your administrator

If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, or a workplace application requires a particular device name, contact the organization’s administrator. Google notes that Linux may be unavailable on work or school devices, and the available guidance does not establish a universal user-side workaround for changing a managed Chromebook’s device hostname.
