Set a Google Play budget to track monthly spending and get an alert, but know that it will not block a purchase when you reach the amount. To add a check before buying, turn on purchase verification and require it for every eligible purchase where that option is available. For a child’s Google Play purchases, use family purchase approvals or Family Link.
Choose the control that matches what you need

Set or change your Google Play budget
On an Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Store app and follow these steps:

- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history.
- Tap Set budget, enter an amount, then tap Save.
The budget uses the currency for your Google Play country profile. The same screen shows how much you have spent so far in the current month. If spending is close to or above your budget, Play displays a message when the account buys an item. To change the amount, return to Budget & history, tap Edit budget, make the change, and save. Choose Remove budget to delete it.

Google describes budgets as monitoring and alerting tools, not transaction limits: a purchase can still go through after you exceed the amount. Budget history is stored in your Google Account and removed after one year. See Google Play Help: Set a budget for your Google Play expenses.

Require verification before purchases
On Android, open Google Play and go to Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Purchase verification. Depending on your region, device, and account, the next setting may be called Verification requirement or Verification frequency. Choose and confirm the option that requires verification for every eligible purchase, if available.
Google’s documented frequency choices include Always, Every 30 minutes on mobile, and Never; what you see can vary by region. Available checks can include your Google Account password, biometrics, a screen lock on eligible devices, or a Google prompt. Use an every-purchase option rather than Never if you want a confirmation step each time.

Check the setting on each device and Google Account you use. Some options, including biometrics and screen lock, may apply to every Google Account on that device, while a Google Account password applies to the associated account. A family manager can choose approval requirements in Google Play family settings. A parent can also manage approvals through Family Link for a child whose account is managed there. Use the route that matches your family setup:

- Google Play: Profile → Settings → Family → Manage family members → select the family member → Purchase approvals.
- Family Link: select the child’s profile → Controls → Google Play → Purchases & download approvals → Require approval for.
Approval categories and labels can differ between routes and devices, so choose from the options shown in your settings. Keep Family Link and Play Store notifications enabled if you rely on approval requests; Google says disabling those notifications can prevent request notifications. Purchases billed outside Google Play
Purchase verification and family approval settings apply to purchases made through Google Play billing. In certain countries, developers may offer an alternative billing system. The developer then handles payment processing and support, and the transaction may not appear in Google Play order history. Google’s Play billing controls do not govern those payments. Family payment methods are not a spending cap
A family payment method is not a universal safeguard: it cannot be used for subscriptions, among other excluded purchases. It does not change the billing boundary for approval settings. Google explains the exclusions in Google Play Help: Use a family payment method on Google Play.
