Do not assume Thumbalizr and Browshot expose interchangeable API parameters.
Does Thumbalizr support direct S3 uploads?
Thumbalizr’s published Embed API accepts a URL and returns an image URL intended for embedding. Its documented options cover screenshot size, dimensions, delay, format and quality, but do not list an S3 hosting parameter or bucket name. What you need before configuring the request
- A Browshot API account and the API details needed to call its screenshot endpoint.
- The target page URL and an
instance_id; Browshot lists bothurlandinstance_idas required for/api/v1/screenshot/create. - An Amazon S3 bucket, plus the current Browshot-specific instructions for allowing the service to upload into it. Contact Browshot for its required account details and access configuration; the published materials do not establish an exact current IAM policy.
AWS says uploading an object requires write permission on the destination bucket. Browshot also warns that incorrect bucket details or ACL configuration can produce an upload error. Configure Browshot to host the screenshot in S3
- Contact Browshot about S3 onboarding. Request the current account details and access instructions for uploading to your bucket. Its feature page describes screenshot or thumbnail generation followed by upload to the customer’s bucket without a local download step. - Create a screenshot request. Use Browshot’s

Inspect the API response for the documented hosted result or an error, then check that the object is available at the returned hosted URL under the intended bucket and access settings. Browshot says, “You don’t need to wait for the screenshot to be finished, nor do you have to download the image file locally to upload it to S3.” That describes the service’s automated hosting workflow; it does not remove the need to complete its account-specific setup. Thumbalizr’s Embed API uses a request token described as an MD5 of the encoded query and secret. Keep that signing flow distinct from Browshot’s API request format; do not copy parameters or credentials between the two based on product names alone. Troubleshooting S3 upload failures
- Invalid bucket or upload error: verify the bucket name and region/details with Browshot, then confirm the service has the access configuration it currently requires.
- ACL-related failure: review the bucket’s access controls with Browshot’s instructions. The available API documentation warns ACL configuration can cause an error but does not establish a universal policy to paste into AWS.
- Screenshot succeeds but you cannot use the object: check the returned hosted URL and the bucket’s privacy/access behavior, including whether the request’s
hosting_privatesetting is appropriate. - You are using Thumbalizr’s Embed API: its documented response is an image URL for embedding, not a direct S3 upload. Choose Browshot’s documented hosting workflow or use a separate download-and-upload process if you must stay with Thumbalizr.
- S3 hosting is not enabled for your account: contact Browshot before relying on automated uploads. Public documentation does not state current onboarding response times or API-plan pricing.
