Build this as a mobile app that connects three separate parts: Meta glasses through Meta’s Wearables Device Access Toolkit, a Flutter app through a native bridge, and Google’s Gemini API for image or video understanding. Meta documents native iOS and Android integration; the Flutter bridge described here is community tooling, not an official Meta Flutter SDK. Start with a single captured image and a visual question, then add Gemini Live only if the app needs repeated visual context.
Understand the three-part architecture
Meta’s Device Access Toolkit is the supported route for connecting an iOS or Android app to AI glasses. It covers capabilities such as camera, display, and input, though the available capabilities can depend on the device and country. Flutter can provide the app’s interface and product logic, but it needs a bridge to the native Meta SDKs. Gemini handles the image or video understanding after the app sends it suitable media.

Keep the boundary between those pieces deliberate: Flutter owns screens and session state; a narrow platform-specific layer owns Meta SDK calls, permissions, device state, and camera callbacks; a Gemini client or backend owns model requests and responses. This separation is a practical design recommendation, not a tested reference implementation.

Check device and developer access first
Before building around a specific pair of glasses, check Meta’s Wearables Developer Center and the Device Access Toolkit setup guide for supported devices, SDK versions, developer-mode requirements, and permission flows. Meta’s toolkit FAQ says full toolkit capabilities are available only in supported countries. Do not assume every glasses model or region exposes the same features.

Meta’s developer article dated April 1, 2026, described the SDK as still under development and mentioned a Mock Device Kit for simulating device behavior. Those are statements from that dated article, not a guarantee of the current status of each toolkit feature; consult the live documentation for present availability.
Choose how Flutter reaches the Meta SDK
Meta’s official material describes iOS and Android app integration, not an official Meta-maintained Flutter SDK. One community project, MetaWearablesDeviceAccessToolkit-Flutter, describes linking the native iOS and Android SDKs and exposing registration, device state, streaming, and photo capture to Dart. Treat that as a third-party bridge, not a Meta endorsement.

- Use a bridge package if it supports the SDK versions and capabilities your app needs. Check its maintenance history, platform coverage, permission handling, and compatibility before committing.
- Build a narrow platform-channel bridge if you need tighter control over native SDK updates or package behavior. Keep the Dart-facing API small and explicit, for example, device connection, permission status, capture request, and media result.
- Build natively if direct access to Meta’s documented integration path matters more than sharing a Flutter UI across platforms.
Start with one captured image
A one-shot visual question is the simplest useful milestone: request the necessary camera permission, capture a still image, send it with a question to Gemini, and display or speak the response. It lets you validate device access, image transfer, API authentication, and response handling before adding a persistent connection or audio interaction.
- Request access. Use the Meta SDK’s documented permission and device connection flow for the target platform.
- Capture a still. Request a photo through the native integration and pass the resulting media to Flutter or directly to a controlled request layer.
- Send image plus question. Use Gemini’s documented image inputs—inline data, a URL, or the File API—with a prompt such as “What objects are on the table?” Google documents visual question answering and image captioning in its image-understanding guide.
- Present the answer. Show the text in the app or route audio through an available output path. Verify the relevant glasses and toolkit support rather than assuming all devices provide the same output features.
Use the first milestone to surface mundane failures clearly: denied permissions, disconnected glasses, missing image data, rejected credentials, and API errors should each have a recoverable state rather than leaving the user waiting indefinitely.

Add Gemini Live for repeated visual context
Gemini Live is Google’s real-time, bidirectional API over WebSockets, with audio, video, and text input and native audio output, as described in the Gemini Live documentation. For video, the documented setup sends individual JPEG or PNG images, with a maximum rate of one frame per second. It is therefore sampled visual context, not an unrestricted high-frame-rate camera stream.
Implement an explicit frame sampler and backpressure policy. If the connection cannot consume a frame, discard or replace stale queued frames rather than allowing a backlog to grow. Manage connection state, interruptions, and reconnects separately from the glasses’ device connection so failures in one do not silently look like failures in the other.

Google documents both server-to-server and client-to-server connection approaches in its Live API overview. A server intermediary can keep credentials and policy enforcement under application control; a direct client connection can avoid an additional backend hop for media. The choice involves credential protection, privacy, latency, and operational requirements. Do not embed an unrestricted secret in a client app.

Pick the media path for the task
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single captured image | One-off “what am I looking at?” question | Simple request flow, but no continuing visual context. Google’s image guide: image understanding. |
| Gemini Live sampled frames | Conversation that needs repeated views of the current scene | Requires WebSocket and frame lifecycle handling; documented video input is limited to one frame per second. Google: Live API. |
| Uploaded video | Questions about an existing recording or event over time | Not the same as low-latency live interaction. Static processing samples one frame per second by default and may miss fast motion. Google: video understanding. |
Use a still or Live frame for a question about what is visible now. Use video understanding for a recorded clip. Because one-frame-per-second sampling can miss rapid movement or scene changes, do not present this path as frame-accurate tracking.

Plan for permissions, privacy, and changing availability
A glasses camera can capture people and spaces beyond the app user. Make capture and transmission visible to the user, limit collection to the task, and decide whether images pass through your server or go directly to Google before implementation. The documentation cited here does not establish current model-by-model compatibility, API pricing, retention terms, or every feature’s regional release status; confirm those details in Meta’s and Google’s current documentation for the account, device, and region you plan to support.
Meta’s toolkit overview also describes web apps and Meta AI Connectors, but those are different integration paths. For a Flutter mobile app that uses Gemini, the relevant Meta route is the mobile Device Access Toolkit.
