What Instagram disappearing messages are
Disappearing messages are temporary texts, reactions and other chat content sent inside an Instagram Direct conversation. They are intended to leave the conversation according to the selected setting instead of remaining as ordinary chat history. Instagram’s wording varies: some accounts still show “Vanish Mode,” while others show “disappearing messages.”

This chat-wide feature is different from sending one disappearing photo or video, and both are different from Instagram’s newer Instants feature.

- Open Instagram on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone.
- Tap the Messages icon and open an existing conversation.
- Swipe upward from the bottom edge of the chat.
- Accept the introduction prompt if Instagram displays one.
- Check for a disappearing-message indicator or a changed message bar.
- If a timer control appears above the message field, select the duration you want.
- Type your message and tap Send.
The upward-swipe method is documented in the Tech Safe BC Instagram Safety Guide. Instagram can move or rename controls between app versions, so the exact banner and labels may differ.
Messages sent while the mode is active follow the temporary setting. Turning it on should not be treated as retroactively deleting earlier, ordinary messages in the chat.

Choose when messages disappear
If your account has the timer selector, the documented choices include the following. Availability and wording can vary by account, region, device and app version.
| Setting | What it means |
|---|---|
| Once they’re seen | The message is intended to disappear after it has been viewed and the relevant chat state is left. |
| 24 hours | The message remains temporarily after viewing, then expires after the selected period. |
| 7 days | The message remains for the longer selected period before expiring. |
| Off | Disables the disappearing timer and restores ordinary chat behavior for new messages. |
These options and their behavior are described in the Tech Safe BC guide. A message may remain visible while the conversation is open or before it has been viewed, so “disappearing” does not always mean instant deletion.
Turn disappearing messages off
- Open the conversation where disappearing messages are enabled.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the chat again.
- Tap the control Instagram shows, such as Turn off disappearing messages or Turn Off Vanish Mode.
Some versions show a banner or button instead of relying only on the gesture. The label can change; the documented turn-off path describes the same general control.
Send a disappearing photo or video
Use this option when you want one piece of media to have limited viewing, rather than making new messages in the whole chat temporary.

- Open Instagram and an eligible Direct conversation.
- Tap the camera or media button beside the message field.
- Take a photo or video, or choose media where Instagram permits it.
- Before sending, select the temporary viewing mode.
- Tap Send.
Depending on the interface, the choices may be:
- View once
- Allow replay
- Keep in chat
Instagram’s Help Center documents disappearing photos and videos for Android, iPhone and iPad, but not computers. It also says the feature is available only when the recipient follows you or has already approved your message.
Who can receive disappearing photos and videos?
The recipient must either follow you or have approved messages from you, according to Instagram’s messaging eligibility guidance. This is why the temporary-media control may be missing in an unaccepted message request or a new conversation with an account that has not approved contact.

Instagram has historically generated screenshot or screen-recording notifications for relevant disappearing content and Vanish Mode chats. The Tech Safe BC guide and a U.S. Department of Justice document describe this behavior.

Do not apply that rule to every Instagram surface. Ordinary DMs, posts, Stories, disappearing media and newer features can have different notification behavior, and Instagram can change it. An alert also cannot stop someone from photographing the screen with another device.
Treat disappearing content as temporary rather than secure deletion. If a message could cause serious harm if copied, reported or retained elsewhere, do not send it. If you need evidence of harassment, threats or abuse, preserve it before relying on an ephemeral mode; screenshots can notify the other participant, so consider using another device or showing the content to a trusted support worker.
Disappearing messages versus Instants
Meta introduced Instants on May 13, 2026. According to its announcement, Instants are real-time photos shared with Close Friends or mutual followers. They disappear after being viewed and cannot be viewed after 24 hours. They are captured in the moment rather than selected from the phone’s gallery, and Meta says screenshots and recordings are blocked for Instants.

Instants are therefore a separate real-time photo feature, not the current name for disappearing text messages and not a replacement for chat-wide Disappearing Messages or Vanish Mode.
Why the option is missing
- You are using Instagram’s desktop website. Disappearing photos and videos are not documented for computers.
- The conversation is still a message request or has not been accepted.
- The recipient does not follow you and has not approved messages.
- Your Instagram app is outdated.
- Instagram moved the control or changed its label in your version.
- The feature has not rolled out to your account, region or chat type.
- You are attaching an ordinary photo instead of opening the temporary-media controls.
- You are trying a group or business conversation where behavior may differ.
What to try when it does not work
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Retry in an existing, accepted one-to-one chat.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge and look for a disappearing-message banner or timer above the message field.
- Try a recipient who follows you or has accepted your message request.
- If the gesture does nothing, check the chat-information screen for a disappearing-message control.
- For a single photo or video, use the camera/media composer and select View once, Allow replay or the equivalent option.
- If a message remains visible, check whether it has been viewed and which timer is selected before assuming the feature failed.
If the control disappears across multiple chats, record your app version, operating system, account type and the date, then report the problem through Instagram’s in-app support.

Do not assume that temporary messages are end-to-end encrypted. Meta’s documentation distinguishes Instagram Vanish Mode from end-to-end-encrypted Messenger disappearing messages, and Meta’s March 9, 2026 update says the optional end-to-end-encrypted messaging feature on Instagram is being removed in the coming months. Disappearing controls manage retention; they do not guarantee confidentiality, prevent copying or provide a recovery-proof deletion mechanism.

Can I send disappearing photos or videos from a computer?
Instagram’s Help Center documents this feature for Android, iPhone and iPad, not computers. Use the mobile app.
Can I send a disappearing photo in an unaccepted message request?
Usually not. Instagram says the recipient must follow you or have already approved your message.
Can the recipient save disappearing content with another phone?
Yes. A screenshot alert, when generated, cannot prevent someone from photographing or recording the screen with another device.
Do old messages disappear when I enable the feature?
No. Treat the mode as applying to messages sent while it is enabled; earlier ordinary chat messages are not automatically converted.
