Android Phone Won’t Start Up? Safe Fixes for a Black Screen, Boot Loop, or Stuck Logo

A phone that will not start may have a flat battery, failed display, bad app, corrupted startup, or hardware damage. Diagnose it safely before considering a factory reset.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not factory-reset an Android phone that will not start as your first step. Remove accessories, check for battery and hardware danger, charge it with a known-good wired setup, then use the correct force-restart procedure for your brand. A phone that rings or vibrates with a black screen may still be running, so diagnose the display before erasing anything.

Identify what “won’t start” means

What you see Most useful next step
No logo, vibration, sound, LED, or charging icon Check charging, force-restart, then assess hardware.
Charging icon appears but startup does not complete Continue charging, then force-restart.
The phone rings or vibrates but the screen stays black Test for a failed display before resetting.
Google, Samsung, or carrier logo remains on screen Try force-restart, then Safe Mode.
The phone repeatedly restarts Use Safe Mode and remove recently installed apps.
“Cannot load Android system” or “No command” appears Use recovery cautiously; choose reboot before any erase option.
The phone is hot, swollen, wet, or physically damaged Stop charging and arrange professional service.
It starts only while connected to power Suspect the battery or charging system.

Google notes that a Pixel can ring while its display remains blank, which points to a possible screen problem rather than a completely powered-off phone (Google Pixel troubleshooting).

Before pressing buttons: safety and basic checks

  • Remove the case, battery pack, magnetic accessory, or anything pressing the Power or Side button.
  • Inspect the USB-C port for lint, corrosion, bent contacts, or liquid. Never force a plug into a blocked port.
  • Try a different wall outlet, known-good cable, and compatible charger. Use wired charging for diagnosis rather than relying on a wireless pad or car mount.
  • If the phone is wet, unusually hot, swollen, smoking, or smells chemical, stop charging it. Do not puncture, squeeze, or continue testing a damaged battery.
  • After a drop or crush, a disconnected display or internal component may explain a black screen even when the phone still operates.

Charge it correctly

  1. Connect the phone directly to a wall outlet with a known-good cable and charger.
  2. Leave it connected for at least 10 minutes. Use 15–30 minutes when the battery may be completely empty.
  3. Watch for a battery icon, vibration, notification LED, warmth, or logo.
  4. While it remains connected, try the brand-specific force restart below.

Google’s Pixel test uses a working cable, charger, and outlet for 10 minutes; a critically low Pixel may need several minutes before its display activates (Pixel charging guidance). Samsung says a completely drained Galaxy should charge for at least 15 minutes and that a battery below 5% may prevent a reboot (Samsung troubleshooting). A phone that remains inert with several known-good setups may have a failed battery, port, power-management circuit, or mainboard; charging overnight is not a guaranteed cure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Force-restart instructions by manufacturer

Google Pixel

  • Pixel 5a and earlier: hold Power for about 30 seconds or until it restarts.
  • Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold: Google documents holding Power for up to 60 seconds and releasing when the Google logo appears. For the power-menu path, Pixel 6 and later may require Power + Volume Up.
  • Blank screen while plugged in: hold Power + Volume Up together for at least 20 seconds.

Release when the logo or vibration appears rather than holding indefinitely. See Google’s power and restart instructions and blank-screen steps.

  • Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Hold Volume Down + Power, or Volume Down + Side button on models using a Side button, for about 10 seconds.
  2. If a power menu appears, keep holding until the Samsung logo displays.
  3. If Maintenance Mode appears, use the volume keys to select Normal Boot and confirm with Power or Side.

Button names and layouts vary by Galaxy model. Samsung’s current procedure is documented at Samsung support.

Other Android manufacturers

Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Sony, ASUS, Nothing, Nokia/HMD, and carrier-branded phones use different combinations. Use the exact procedure on the manufacturer’s support site; recovery buttons are not standardized across Android hardware.

Check whether the phone is running but the display is dead

  • Call it from another phone.
  • Use Google’s device-finding service if it was enabled.
  • Connect it to a computer and check whether the computer detects it.
  • Listen for notifications or feel for vibration.
  • Shine a light across the display for a faint image and press the display-wake button once.

Ringing, vibration, or computer detection suggests that the operating system or USB subsystem may still be functioning. It does not prove whether the fault is the panel, connector, graphics system, or mainboard. Avoid a blind factory reset when valuable data may still be accessible.

  • High Power ≠ High Risk | Smarter Compatibility for Every Device: 240W doesn't mean compromising safety—it means unmatched versatility. Thanks to PD3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) technology, our c to c cable fast charging dynamically adjusts voltage/current to deliver each device's maximum safe power (e.g., 60W to iPads, 100W to older MacBooks, 140W to MacBook Pro). Other 60W/100W usb c to usb c cable can't hit full charging speed for your power-hungry devices—they're held back by their own power limits. LISEN 240W usb-c charge cable? It charges all your gear steadily, efficiently, and at full speed, with zero safety risks
  • 240W Ultra Fast Charging | Smart Protocol Matching: This iPhone 18 pro max charger fast charging cable supports PD3.1 EPR/QC4.0 fast charging up to 240W Max, working seamlessly with USB-C Power Delivery adapters (e.g.60W/100W/240W). It's 2.4X faster than 100W fast charging usb-c cables: Up to 85% charged in 30 mins for iPhone 18 Pro Max, up to 65% charged in 30 mins for iPad Pro, and up to 80% charged in 30 mins for MacBook Pro 16''(M5). This iPhone 18 charger cord balances speed and protection perfectly, giving you both fast and secure charging
  • E-Marker 3.0 Chip | Real-Time Current/Voltage Monitoring: LISEN 240W type c charger fast charging cable has an E-Marker 3.0 + PD3.1 EPR system that actively monitors current/voltage 3.2M+ times per second, ensuring zero overloads, short circuits, or battery damage. Paired with dual safeguards (overheat + surge protection) and PD3.1/QC4.0 certifications, it's not just a USB-C to USB-C cable—it's a smart guardian for your devices
  • Premium Copper Core | Conductivity Meets Durability: This high speed usb c cable fast charging is upgraded from standard copper to 99.99% oxygen-free copper cores—thicker, purer, and lower-resistance. This means: (1) Stable power delivery even at 240W (no energy loss or heat buildup). (2) Longer lifespan (resists corrosion and wear, unlike cheaper alloys). (3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference

Stuck on the logo or caught in a boot loop

  1. Remove accessories and connect the phone to power.
  2. Perform one force-restart attempt.
  3. Try Safe Mode.
  4. If Safe Mode works, uninstall apps installed or updated shortly before the failure.
  5. If the problem began after a system update, check the manufacturer’s current support notice rather than assuming a reset is required.
  6. Do not repeatedly interrupt startup or install random firmware; use recovery or official repair tools only after understanding data and warranty risks.

A logo proves only that some startup code is running; it does not prove the battery, storage, or operating system is healthy. Samsung’s model-specific stuck-logo guidance is available at Samsung support.

Use Safe Mode to test third-party apps

Pixel

  1. If the phone is on, open the power menu. Pixel 6 and later may require Power + Volume Up.
  2. Touch and hold Power off or Restart.
  3. Tap OK when Safe Mode appears.
  4. If the phone is off, press Power; when the startup animation begins, hold Volume Down until “Safe mode” appears.

Google says Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps; some home-screen widgets may disappear until a normal restart (Pixel Safe Mode).

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Turn the device on.
  2. When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume Down.
  3. Release it after startup finishes; “Safe mode” appears at the bottom.
  4. Restart normally to exit.

See Samsung’s Safe Mode instructions.

What to remove in Safe Mode

Uninstall recently added or updated battery-saving, cleaning, antivirus, launcher, overlay, accessibility, or automation apps, restarting normally after each removal. Normal operation in Safe Mode makes a downloaded app more likely, but does not prove it is the only cause. If the problem persists in Safe Mode, a third-party app is less likely.

Recovery mode, Fastboot, and “No command”

Fastboot or bootloader is a low-level startup environment. Recovery mode is a maintenance environment that may offer reboot, official update, or erase actions. “No command” is often an intermediate recovery screen, not proof that the phone is permanently bricked. Menus and button combinations differ by manufacturer and Android version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported Pixels, Google documents entering Fastboot and selecting Android Recovery (Pixel Fastboot recovery). When a menu appears, choose only:

  • Reboot system now to preserve data while testing startup.
  • Apply update only when following an official manufacturer procedure with the correct package.
  • Wipe data/factory reset only after reading the data-loss and account warnings below.

Do not unlock the bootloader, flash unofficial firmware, or run random ADB commands as a first-line fix. Unlocking commonly erases data and can affect security or warranty.

Back up data before any reset

If the phone boots even briefly:

  • Back up to the Google Account and confirm Google Photos has finished syncing.
  • Copy files to a computer if USB access works.
  • Export authenticator codes or transfer accounts where supported.
  • Save WhatsApp and other app-specific backups.
  • Check synced contacts, calendars, notes, messages, eSIM details, and carrier information.
  • Remember that Android backup does not guarantee every app’s private data or every locally stored file will return (Google backup limits).

Factory reset is the last resort

A factory reset erases locally stored data, apps, and app data. Cloud-synchronized content may be restorable, but you must know the Google Account previously used on the phone because Factory Reset Protection can require those credentials during setup. Google advises waiting 24 hours after changing the Google password before resetting. The process can take up to an hour (Android reset guidance).

Use Settings when the phone is usable, following Google’s Pixel reset instructions, or use the documented Pixel Fastboot route above when normal startup is impossible. A reset may correct software corruption, but it cannot repair a battery, port, display, or mainboard.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair

  • The phone is swollen, overheating, wet, smoking, or chemically odorous.
  • It was dropped or crushed and then stopped responding.
  • The charging port is visibly damaged.
  • Several known-good chargers and outlets produce no response.
  • It never reaches a logo, recovery screen, bootloader, or computer detection.
  • It still fails after a factory reset, or important data remains unrecovered.
  • The device is under warranty or protection coverage.

Have the exact model and storage version, IMEI or serial number, purchase date, warranty status, damage history, visible symptoms, backup status, and Google Account credentials ready. Pixel repair estimates vary by model, damage, warranty, repair partner, and location; use Google’s official repair flow and cost guidance. Galaxy owners should start with Samsung’s official support and repair entry point.

Choose replacement or repair carefully

Option Advantage Trade-off
Known-good cable or charger Least expensive diagnostic purchase Cannot fix internal hardware
Manufacturer repair Best warranty and parts compatibility Price and turnaround vary
Protection plan May reduce future repair or replacement costs Usually must be bought before failure; deductibles and exclusions apply
Independent repair May be faster or cheaper Parts, warranty, water-resistance, and data-privacy trade-offs
Replacement phone Fastest when board repair is uneconomical Highest immediate cost and data may remain inaccessible

Google’s protection information is at Google device protection; published plan terms show that prices and service fees vary by device and coverage tier (current terms). An independent shop should provide a written estimate, parts warranty, privacy policy, and a clear statement about water resistance after opening the device. Avoid any shop or software that immediately demands a reset or your account password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Android phone still not turn on after charging?

If multiple known-good wired chargers, outlets, and cables produce no icon, vibration, logo, or computer detection, a battery, charging-port, power-management, or mainboard fault is more likely than a simple low battery. Stop if the phone is hot, swollen, wet, or damaged and arrange repair.

Can I fix an Android phone that will not start without losing data?

Often yes: charging, force-restarting, testing the display, Safe Mode, and choosing Reboot system now in recovery generally come before erasing. Do not choose Wipe data/factory reset until backups and Google Account credentials are confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Safe Mode delete anything?

No. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. Widgets may disappear temporarily, and you can remove recently installed apps before restarting normally.

Should I use ADB or flash firmware?

Not as a first-line fix. Unofficial firmware, bootloader unlocking, and random ADB commands can erase data, reduce security, or affect warranty. Use only an official manufacturer procedure or qualified repair service.

The Bottom Line

Charge safely, force-restart with the correct brand-specific buttons, distinguish a dead display from a dead phone, and try Safe Mode before recovery. Factory-reset only after backing up what you can and accepting permanent local-data loss; otherwise, use authorized repair.
