For a simple Slack alert when a GitHub Actions test job finishes, save a Slack incoming webhook URL as a repository secret and post a message from the workflow. That reports status and a run or change link; it does not parse test output into pass/fail counts. To send failed test names or counts, generate a machine-readable test report and pass it to a report-aware integration.
Choose the kind of Slack notification you need
| Approach | What it can send | What you need to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming webhook status message | A message with workflow status and a run or change link; Slack also supports Block Kit payloads. | A webhook URL stored as a CI secret and a workflow step that posts a payload. |
| Report-aware notification | A summary derived from a generated report, potentially including failed-test or flaky-test details. | A test report, plus an integration that reads it. If notification runs in another job, transfer the report as an artifact. |
| Other Slack connection | Structured data for Slack Workflow Builder, Slack API messages, or Slack CLI commands, depending on the method. | The matching webhook, token and scopes, or CLI configuration. Workflow Builder webhooks require a paid Slack plan, according to Slack’s documentation. |
Use the webhook route when a status and link are enough. Choose a report-aware route when the channel needs to know what failed without opening the test report. Slack’s official GitHub Action documents the available connection styles and recommends using its latest action version; check the Slack GitHub Action documentation for current version guidance before pinning an action release.

Post a workflow status with an incoming webhook
1. Create a Slack webhook and store it securely
- In Slack, create or use a Slack app and enable the incoming-webhook capability.
- Install the app in the workspace and choose the channel that should receive notifications.
- Save the generated webhook URL in your GitHub repository under Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions → New repository secret. Name it
SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL. Slack’s setup guide explicitly recommends adding the URL as a repository secret; do not put it in committed workflow YAML.
See Slack’s incoming webhook setup and payload documentation for the current app setup and message format.

Place this step after the test step in the job. The example uses Slack’s documented action syntax and the version shown in the Slack guidance; recheck the current release before publishing or adopting it.

- name: Notify Slack
if: always() && !cancelled()
uses: slackapi/[email protected]
with:
webhook: ${{ secrets.SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL }}
webhook-type: incoming-webhook
payload: |
text: "Automated tests: ${{ job.status }}n${{ github.event.pull_request.html_url || github.event.head_commit.url }}"
The always() condition lets the notification step run after a failed test step; excluding cancelled runs is deliberate here. Remove or change the cancellation check if your team wants cancellation alerts too. The expression selects a pull-request URL when available and otherwise uses the commit URL. For workflows triggered by events where neither context is useful, replace it with a link or identifier that exists for that event.
This sends the job’s status and supplied context. It does not inspect test-runner output, so the message is not a test report and should not be presented as one. Incoming webhooks accept ordinary message text and Block Kit blocks; use Slack’s payload documentation when you need richer formatting.

Include counts or failing-test details
A Slack action cannot report details it never receives. Configure the test runner or a reporter integration to produce a machine-readable report, then use a report-aware Slack step to read it. A typical workflow has these stages:
- Run tests and produce a report in the format expected by the chosen reporter.
- Run the notification when tests fail as well as when they pass, if failures are what the team needs to see. Confirm the condition does not inadvertently suppress the notification after a failed test step.
- Give the reporter the report path and the Slack credentials and destination it requires.
- Post a concise summary and a link to the workflow run or fuller report, rather than copying an unwieldy test log into Slack.
Using a separate notification job
If tests and notification run in separate jobs, upload the report in the test job and download it in the notification job before invoking the reporter. Then check that the downloaded file path matches the path passed to the reporting action. Automattic’s action-test-results-to-slack example demonstrates this artifact handoff and a notification condition that permits failure notifications while excluding cancelled runs.

That action’s documentation lists a GitHub token, Slack bot token, and channel ID among its inputs. It also describes message-writing scopes, history access for updating previous messages, and GitHub Actions read access; its fine-grained-token guidance specifies read-only Actions access. Verify the action’s current maintenance status, version, permissions, and required scopes before adopting it. Do not assume its token requirements are the same as an incoming webhook’s.
Using CTRF reports
CTRF’s Slack Test Results Notification documentation describes Slack reporting from CTRF JSON, JUnit-to-CTRF conversion, webhook or OAuth configuration, and reporting options for summaries, failed tests, and flaky tests. It also documents failure-only notification. Follow CTRF’s current instructions for the exact commands and configuration; these are project-specific capabilities, not generic Slack webhook features.

Choose the right Slack connection and permissions
- Incoming webhook: A good fit for a fixed destination and a straightforward message. Protect the webhook URL as a secret.
- Slack API with a token: Useful when an integration needs API behavior or a bot identity. Check the action’s required scopes and grant only those needed.
- Workflow Builder webhook: Sends structured data into a Slack workflow for further processing. Slack’s cited documentation says this webhook option requires a paid Slack plan.
- Slack CLI: An option when the CI workflow is designed to run Slack CLI commands; configure it according to Slack’s documentation.
- GitHub app notifications: GitHub’s Slack app can subscribe to workflow-run notifications, but GitHub notes that extra app permissions are required. This is a workflow notification route, not evidence that the app parses test reports into test-level details.
Slack’s GitHub Actions integration guide describes the webhook, API, Workflow Builder, and CLI approaches. GitHub explains its app-based workflow subscriptions in Customizing notifications for GitHub in Slack.
Troubleshoot missing or unhelpful alerts
- No Slack message: Confirm the secret name in the workflow exactly matches the repository secret, the webhook belongs to the intended workspace and channel, and the notification step ran. Keep the webhook URL out of logs and commits.
- The message says the job failed but has no failed test names: That is expected from a status-only payload. Generate a report and use an integration that reads it.
- Report-aware action cannot find a report: Confirm the test step generated the expected file, the artifact upload and download steps completed, and the reporter uses the downloaded path.
- Notification is skipped after test failure: Inspect the notification step’s condition and job dependencies. Configure it to run despite a failed test step, while deciding separately whether cancelled runs should notify.
- Token-based action rejects access: Compare granted Slack scopes and GitHub token permissions with the action’s current requirements. A webhook and a bot-token integration have different credential models.
- Too much detail in the channel: Send a compact summary and a run/report link; keep full logs in the report artifact or CI interface.
Or skip the browser setup
If your testing workflow also needs website screenshots—for example, to capture a rendered page for a visual check—you can request one from ScreenshotNeo without setting up a browser in the job. This is separate from sending test results to Slack; it does not replace the Slack notification or parse a test report.
