Then configure an agent or collector to send those records to the provider’s endpoint, grant the identity used by the pipeline the required permissions, and verify a recent record in the intended destination.
This guide explains How to Send Application Logs to a Managed Log Management Service across common setups. OpenTelemetry can provide a vendor-neutral data model and transport path, but the endpoint, authentication, destination names, permissions, and supported deployment environments remain provider-specific.

Choose how logs leave the application
Start with the logs you have, not with a particular vendor. OpenTelemetry describes two principal approaches: emit logs from the application through a logging API or bridge, or collect output the application already writes to files or standard streams.
| Starting point | What changes | Where collection work happens |
|---|---|---|
| Application logging API or bridge | Configure or instrument the application’s logging library to send records into the OpenTelemetry logs pipeline. | The application and its SDK or bridge provide the records and application context. |
| Existing files or stdout/stderr | Usually keep the existing logging calls; configure an agent or collector to read the output. | The collector or agent reads, parses, and enriches records. File collection may also need rotation handling, discovery of new files, and checkpoints for resuming from saved positions. |
Use an API or bridge when application context matters
OpenTelemetry logging appenders can bridge existing logging libraries into the OpenTelemetry logs data model. This route can attach resource context that identifies the service and may carry trace and span fields. Trace correlation is not automatic: the application’s instrumentation and context propagation must be configured for it.

Collect existing output when you want to avoid changing logging calls
A file or stream collector can be a practical fit when the application already writes usable logs to files, stdout, or stderr. Confirm that the chosen component can read the actual format and handle operational details such as file rotation and newly created files. If the OpenTelemetry Collector does not have the required file-reading or parsing capability, OpenTelemetry describes using a separate agent, such as Fluent Bit, to collect records and forward them to the Collector.
Build the shipping path
A typical pipeline is application or runtime → agent/collector → managed service endpoint. The collector separates application logging from provider-specific delivery, but it does not remove the need to configure the destination correctly. Parsing, metadata enrichment, authentication, buffering, and retry behavior depend on the selected collector and backend; check their current documentation rather than assuming one configuration applies everywhere.

- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
- Identify the source: determine whether records come from an API or bridge, files, stdout, or stderr, and establish the log format.
- Select the collection component: choose an SDK, agent, or collector that supports that source and the intended destination. Check the version-specific documentation for supported inputs and outputs.
- Set service identity and context: configure useful resource attributes so records can be attributed to the application and environment.
- Configure delivery: set the endpoint and protocol, authentication, and any destination names or headers required by the backend.
- Provide runtime access: give the collector access to the files or streams it must read, and grant its service identity the destination permissions needed for this pipeline.
- Verify ingestion: check collector or agent health, then inspect the expected service destination for a recent test record.
Fluent Bit’s OpenTelemetry output, for example, documents an HTTP endpoint and options for host, headers, authentication-related settings, batching, compression, and AWS SigV4. Use the manual for the exact Fluent Bit version you deploy; the available settings do not make provider authentication or destination mapping interchangeable.
Account for provider-specific ingestion
Amazon CloudWatch
AWS documents both a CloudWatch agent path for application telemetry and an OTLP Logs endpoint. The documented endpoint pattern is https://logs.<AWS Region>.amazonaws.com/v1/logs. For OTLP Logs requests, AWS requires the x-aws-log-group and x-aws-log-stream headers to identify the destination. The endpoint is regional, so use the region for the intended CloudWatch destination. See the CloudWatch OTLP endpoint documentation and the CloudWatch agent setup guide for current setup and prerequisites.

Azure Monitor
Microsoft documents native OTLP ingestion options using the OpenTelemetry Collector, Azure Monitor Agent, and AKS-integrated onboarding for applications instrumented with open-source OpenTelemetry SDKs. It also documents the Microsoft OpenTelemetry Distro as an integrated instrumentation route. These options are not necessarily interchangeable in every deployment; choose based on the environment and existing instrumentation. Consult Microsoft’s OpenTelemetry guidance for Azure Monitor for the supported paths and configuration details.
Google Cloud
Google’s Ops Agent combines collection in one process and uses Fluent Bit for logs. The overview does not, by itself, provide a complete application-log setup recipe, so follow the current Google Cloud Ops Agent documentation for the relevant environment and configuration.

Set permissions and runtime access
The identity and access requirements depend on the collection method, destination, and deployment environment. Grant the agent or collector only the permissions required by its actual route, and ensure it can read the source logs. Do not copy permissions from one cloud or pipeline into another.

Verify that records reached the right destination
A healthy process is necessary but does not prove that logs are arriving where you expect. Send a distinctive test event, then verify both the collection component and the managed service destination.
- Check the agent or collector’s health and its reported errors.
- Confirm its source configuration points to the intended files or streams and that it has access to them.
- Inspect the expected log group and stream, workspace, or other destination for a recent test record.
- If the record is missing, check the endpoint, protocol, authentication, destination names or headers, and permissions for the exact provider path.
AWS’s application telemetry setup includes a verification stage; follow the current instructions for the selected provider and environment. The relevant destination may be a CloudWatch log group and stream, an Azure Monitor workspace, or another service-specific location.
