For the current Windows desktop versions covered by Microsoft’s requirements, plan on at least 4 GB of available local disk space for Microsoft 365, Office 2024 or Office 2021. That is free space for the app—not the HP Stream’s total storage capacity. Whether your Stream has enough room depends on its exact model and how much space Windows, updates and your files already use.
How much free space does Office require?
Microsoft lists 4 GB of available disk space for Microsoft 365 for home on Windows, and the same amount for the Windows editions of Office 2024 and Office 2021. The figure is a published minimum for available space; it is not a guarantee that exactly 4 GB will be enough in every installation situation. Updates and other installed content also need room.

Windows itself, its updates, Office and your personal files all use the same local storage. A laptop advertised with 32 GB or 64 GB therefore does not necessarily have 4 GB free today. Microsoft separately lists a 64 GB or larger storage device as a Windows 11 minimum. That is an operating-system requirement, not Office’s app-space requirement, and Windows updates or particular features may need more storage. Windows 11 system requirements
Check the space on your particular Stream
- Find the model number. Use the laptop’s product label or Windows system information, then compare it with the matching HP documentation. Do not infer your configuration from another Stream model.
- Check current free space. In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage and review the available space on the drive where Windows is installed.
- Compare the reading with Office’s requirement. If less than 4 GB is available, free local space and check again before starting the installation. Since 4 GB is a published minimum, leaving additional room for updates and other content is prudent.
- Confirm compatibility as well as capacity. Check the requirements for your Office edition and Windows version; free disk space alone does not establish that an older Stream supports the current software.
Does Microsoft 365 cloud storage replace local space?
No. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 home subscriptions include 1 TB of cloud storage per user, but that does not change the 4 GB local-space figure for the Windows app. Cloud file-management features require OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint. Not without checking the exact Stream model and the specific problem you are trying to solve. The model records cited here do not establish your laptop’s expansion options or whether Office can be installed on removable storage. Check the model’s HP documentation and Windows’ current free-space display before choosing hardware. An external drive or card may be useful for personal files, but do not assume it will provide a supported location for the Office installation.
