To send an AzuraCast station to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, relay the station’s listener-facing audio mount—not a DJ input—combine it with a still image or other video if the YouTube ingest requires video, and publish to the event’s RTMPS URL using its stream key. Test the preview and audio in YouTube Live Control Room before going public.
What you need before starting
- An AzuraCast listener mount URL that the computer running FFmpeg can reach. AzuraCast’s default pattern is
{HTTP/HTTPS}://{BASE_URL}.TLD/listen/{STATION_URL_STUB}/{MOUNT_POINT_URL}, but installations can use custom mount URLs. Use the URL shown by your station or its public page, rather than guessing a hostname, port, station slug, or mount filename. See AzuraCast station setup. - A YouTube Live Control Room event, its Stream URL, and its stream key. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s “password and address”; treat it as a secret. - A local image or video to provide the visual component if the event’s YouTube ingest expects video. Use material you have the rights to broadcast.
- An FFmpeg build with the input and output formats and codecs your chosen command requires. Check the options supported by your local build with
ffmpeg -h; the exact command depends on the source stream format, build, and endpoint.
AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap as its AutoDJ backend to assemble station output and a broadcast frontend optimized to serve listeners. For rebroadcasting what listeners hear, the listener-facing mount is the appropriate source, not a DJ login or input. AzuraCast documentation.

Choose the AzuraCast listener URL
- Open the station’s public page or mount-point information in AzuraCast and copy the listener-facing audio URL for the broadcast you want to relay.
- From the machine that will run FFmpeg, check that the URL is reachable and plays the intended station output. Confirm the correct scheme, hostname, port, and mount path. If the station requires credentials, use the access method configured for that mount.
- If the URL does not connect, check DNS and TLS, port access, the mount path, any required credentials, and reverse-proxy behavior. AzuraCast notes that reverse proxies may prevent direct connections on broadcaster ports; the right network configuration depends on the individual installation. AzuraCast station setup.
Get the YouTube RTMPS endpoint and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open or create the live event and go to its Live Control Room.
- Copy the Stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Do not substitute an endpoint or key from another event.
- If you want encrypted ingest, reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock control in Stream settings and copy that URL. The ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube encoder settings and requirements.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube: Set up your encoder.
Configure FFmpeg to relay the station
An AzuraCast mount is usually an audio source, while a YouTube encoder workflow may require a video stream as well. A common implementation pattern is to loop a locally licensed still image, read audio from the listener mount, encode compatible video and audio, and send the result to the event’s RTMPS endpoint. This is a pattern, not a universal or tested FFmpeg command: the necessary flags and input handling depend on your FFmpeg build, source format, visual source, and YouTube endpoint. Do not paste a command with guessed values and assume it will work.

Set output parameters to YouTube’s guidance
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps. YouTube encoder settings and requirements.
- For video output, choose a resolution and bitrate suited to your content and available upload capacity; use the bitrate table on YouTube’s encoder settings page for the selected resolution. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These keyframe recommendations apply to video output, not an audio-only mount.
- Use the exact RTMPS URL and stream key for the event. Confirm that your local FFmpeg build supports the protocols and codecs required by your implementation before relying on it.
Keep the stream key out of shared logs
Do not publish a command containing a real key in a tutorial, support post, screenshot, or shared log. Where possible, keep the key in a protected local configuration or environment and limit access to the machine and files that contain it. If a key leaks, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room.

Test the feed before going live
- Start FFmpeg with the actual listener URL, visual source, output settings, RTMPS endpoint, and event key.
- Wait for the event preview or connection status in Live Control Room. Confirm that the selected visual appears and that the station audio is audible and stable.
- Resolve any warnings shown in stream health before making the event public or clicking Go Live. YouTube advises testing first and monitoring health messages during the broadcast. YouTube encoder settings and requirements.
- While transmitting, keep an eye on the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the feed stops or loses audio, check the source connection, destination URL and key, and whether the encoder is still running.
Troubleshooting common problems

Relaying a station does not change the rights obligations for its music, recordings, images, or other material. Use only content you are authorized to broadcast, including the visual you add to an audio-only stream. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright policies in Studio before scheduling a public broadcast; a successful technical connection does not establish that the content is permitted.
