Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen Settings and look near the top of the main screen for a notice that search and Siri are optimising. That is Apple’s documented way to tell that iPhone search indexing is underway. Some iOS 27 beta 1 reporting used the exact words “Indexing in Progress,” but the wording can differ by build or language.
Check indexing status in Settings
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Look near the top of the main Settings screen for an indexing notice or a message that search and Siri are optimising.
Apple’s current support guidance describes the optimisation notice; the exact “Indexing in Progress” banner is reported for iOS 27 beta 1, so do not expect that literal phrase on every version. Apple’s guidance does not document a percentage indicator on iPhone.
How long indexing can take
Indexing may take hours or even days, depending on how much data is on the device. Apple says it can finish sooner while the iPhone is idle, connected to power, and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The beta 1 banner also said the phone could be used normally and that longer charging sessions help. See Apple’s Spotlight indexing guidance and the beta status reporting.
What the notification means
Spotlight is Apple’s system-wide search feature. Its index helps find content such as documents, email, messages, contacts, photos, music, podcasts, notes, and settings; Siri can also use indexed content when responding. Apple says the index stays on the device and is not shared with Apple or other devices. Indexing can occur during first setup, after a software update or upgrade, and when data changes. Apple’s cited material does not attribute this particular notification to a specific Apple Intelligence model or feature. Apple’s explanation of Spotlight indexing has further detail.

If the notice is gone but search results are missing
Check whether the app is configured to appear in Search, and whether it supports Spotlight indexing. Apple notes that an app’s content appears in Spotlight only when that app supports indexing.
- Open Settings > Search.
- Review the available Search settings for the affected app.
- If the expected content still does not appear, check whether the app supports Spotlight indexing. See Apple’s iOS 27 Spotlight guide.
Can you see an exact indexing percentage?
Apple’s documented iPhone status check is the Settings notice; its cited support guidance does not provide an on-phone percentage. An older method used Mac Console and searched for spotlight indexing progress to find a PipelineCompleteness value. Reporting says that method stopped working in later iOS 27 versions: 9to5Mac says it ceased working from beta 2, and iDownloadBlog’s September 18, 2026 update says Apple blocked the percentage view in later versions. Treat it as obsolete rather than relying on it as a current status check. See 9to5Mac’s report and iDownloadBlog’s updated account.
