How to Securely Erase a Laptop, Phone, or Tablet Before Trading It In

A practical guide to backing up and erasing an iPhone, Android device, Windows laptop, or Mac before a trade-in—and what a consumer reset can and cannot guarantee.

Back up and verify anything you want to keep, then use the device’s built-in erase or reset process and complete the account, SIM, and trade-in handoff steps. The right procedure depends on whether you have an iPhone or iPad, Android device, Windows laptop, or Mac. A consumer reset is useful for a normal handoff, but it should not be described as a certified or guaranteed purge of sensitive data.

Before you erase: back up and prepare

Erasing is destructive. Make a backup and check that it contains the files, photos, messages, or other data you need before continuing. Apple recommends backing up before erasing an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. On Android, data saved to a Google Account may be restored, but a factory reset removes apps and their data. For a Windows laptop, copy needed files and make sure you can access your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.

  • Confirm that the backup is complete and that you can access it from another device or account.
  • Gather account credentials and your device passcode. Android owners should know the Google Account username and password associated with the device.
  • Check the trade-in provider’s instructions for required accessories, account removal, SIMs, and deadlines.
  • If the device has a physical SIM or removable memory card, remove it before handoff. For an eSIM, follow the on-screen transfer or deletion choice described below.

A portable external SSD is one possible place to keep a local backup, but buying one is unnecessary if you already have a verified cloud or local backup.

Erase an iPhone or iPad

  1. Back up the device and transfer anything you want to keep. Apple also advises checking Parts and Service History for an unfinished repair before selling or trading in.
  2. On the device, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Enter the passcode or Apple Account credentials if requested, then follow the prompts. On an eSIM device, choose whether to keep or delete the eSIM based on whether cellular service should transfer. If you delete it, Apple says the carrier must reactivate service for a new owner.
  4. Allow the erase to finish. Apple says this process turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
  5. If switching from iPhone to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage. Apple also advises removing the old device from your trusted-device list.

If the iPhone or iPad is no longer in your possession, Apple says to try a remote erase through Find Devices if it was lost or stolen. A remote erase is not a substitute for checking physical SIMs, accessories, or handoff requirements when you still have the device. See Apple’s iPhone erase instructions, iPad erase instructions, and sell or trade guidance.

Factory-reset an Android phone or tablet

  1. Back up wanted data and confirm you know the Google Account credentials and screen lock used on the device.
  2. On most Android devices, start the factory reset from the Settings app. The exact menu labels vary by manufacturer, so use the maker’s instructions for your model.
  3. If Settings is inaccessible, a hardware-button recovery reset may be available, but its steps are manufacturer-specific.
  4. After resetting, make sure the Google account and any manufacturer account or device-finding lock are removed as required by the device maker or trade-in recipient.

Google warns that if you recently changed your Google Account password, you may need to wait 24 hours before factory-resetting. Google provides Android factory-reset guidance and instructions for preparing to trade in or switch devices. If sending an Android device to Apple for trade-in, Apple says to sign out of Android accounts first; see its trade-in guidance.

Reset a Windows laptop

  1. Back up your files and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC and choose Remove everything.
  3. In the reset options, enable Clean data when selling, donating, or recycling the computer. This makes recovery harder than a basic reset.
  4. Choose Cloud download to fetch a fresh Windows copy or Local reinstall to use files already on the PC. Microsoft notes that Local reinstall may not include the latest updates.
  5. Let the reset complete without forcibly restarting the laptop. The screen may remain black for a long period during the process.

Microsoft states that its consumer data-erasure feature “does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” Treat Clean data as a consumer handoff measure, not a certified sanitization process. Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions provide the current steps. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so do not assume Windows 10 menus or support status are current.

Erase a Mac laptop

Use Erase All Content and Settings only if the Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor with the T2 Security Chip and runs macOS Monterey 12 or later.

  1. Back up the Mac with Time Machine or another method and verify the backup.
  2. Open System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset and choose Erase All Content and Settings. On older macOS versions that support the feature, the menu may be in System Preferences.
  3. Follow Erase Assistant’s prompts. Apple says it removes user accounts, data, and volumes; signs out of Apple services; and turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
  4. When the Mac restarts to Setup Assistant, leave it at that screen for the next owner instead of creating a new account.

If Erase All Content and Settings is unavailable, use Apple’s model-specific erase and reinstall instructions. Apple’s Mac erase guide also explains which Macs support Erase Assistant.

HowFixit Magnetic Project Mat and Screw Organizer Pad for Electronics Repair, Small Parts Holder Work Surface for Phone, Laptop, Tablet, Game Console, Camera, Drone Repair
  • Organize Screws by Step: Keep tiny screws, brackets, shields, covers, fasteners, and small metal parts grouped as you remove them. The magnetic surface helps reduce lost parts and keeps your repair workflow cleaner during teardown and reassembly.

What “secure erase” means for a trade-in

NIST defines media sanitization as a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort. That is a more careful standard than simply saying that a reset makes recovery impossible. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 was published in final form on September 26, 2025; see the NIST publication.

For an ordinary consumer trade-in, use the platform’s erase flow and complete the account and service handoff steps. Do not assume that every reset is a verified purge or certified sanitization. Organizations handling sensitive data should follow their approved, media-specific sanitization process and retain any required records.
