What to Check Before Buying a PlayStation or Nintendo Console Late in Its Generation

Before buying, start with the games you most want to play and verify each one on the manufacturer’s current compatibility page. Sony says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games; Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible Switch games, while warning that some may not work or may not be fully compatible. Then check your game formats, accessories, account and subscription continuity, and the current price of the exact model in your region.

Is buying late in a console generation still worthwhile?

“Late in the generation” is not enough on its own to establish whether a console is a good or bad buy. The practical question is whether its available games and features suit you, and whether the local price and bundle make sense against your alternatives. There is no verified end-of-generation date or definitive successor timetable established here, so do not treat a rumor or an assumed schedule as a purchase deadline.

Before deciding, check current listings from retailers in your region and the platform’s official news page. Prices, stock, bundles, taxes, and promotions vary by market and change over time. A US refurbished PlayStation Direct listing, for example, does not establish availability or value elsewhere.

Check your must-play games first

Write down the specific games you expect to play, including the edition or format you own. Search each title on the platform maker’s current compatibility page; broad statements about a catalog do not guarantee that every game or feature you care about will work exactly as expected.

  • PlayStation: Sony Interactive Entertainment says PS5 is backward compatible with the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently measured compatibility count. Some PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, and some PS4 features may not be available on PS5. Check Sony’s PS4 game compatibility guidance for PS5.
  • Nintendo: Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the hardware differs. Some titles also have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guide.

Confirm the console model matches your game format

For PlayStation, distinguish between games you own digitally and games on PS4 discs. Digital titles are accessed through the account and library process Sony describes; using a PS4 disc requires a compatible PS5 console with a disc drive. Verify the exact model before buying rather than assuming every PS5 model accepts discs. Sony’s compatibility page also explains upgrade options for eligible games; check the individual title’s terms rather than assuming an upgrade is free or available for every game.

For Nintendo, check whether each Switch title you own is physical or digital and follow Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for that title. Do not assume every cartridge, game feature, or accessory will transfer unchanged to Switch 2.

Check the accessories and play features you plan to keep

List the controllers and other peripherals you already own—such as headsets, cameras, storage devices, and VR equipment—and verify each against the official compatibility information for the console model and games you intend to use.

  • Sony says DualShock 4 controllers and licensed third-party controllers can be used with supported PS4 games on PS5; this does not make them universal substitutes for PS5 controllers across all games.
  • PS VR play on PS5 requires a PS VR headset and specified PS4 camera equipment with an adapter. Confirm the required equipment on Sony’s support page before relying on an existing setup.
  • Nintendo’s Switch 2 guide covers software, accessories, and features. Check the specific item rather than assuming a Switch accessory works in every mode or with every game on Switch 2.

Also compare how you actually play: handheld use, TV play, local multiplayer, or access to particular versions of multiplatform games. These are preference questions; the compatibility sources do not establish comparative performance benchmarks between the systems.

Understand what carries over with your account and subscription

Nintendo says linked Nintendo Accounts can be used on Switch 2, eShop funds are shared across linked systems, and an existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can be used on linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. Some benefits are specific to Switch 2, including the GameCube – Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo also says virtual game cards can be managed across two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time, subject to its instructions. Review the account and service details in Nintendo’s compatibility guide before moving systems.

For PlayStation, check that you can sign in to the account containing your digital games and review Sony’s instructions for accessing them on PS5. If your library is primarily disc-based, the drive question matters just as much as account access.

Compare the total cost, not just the console price

Use current local listings for the exact model and compare the full setup you need. Include the games you plan to buy, any subscription you want, an extra controller, required accessories, storage, and tax. Do not use an old launch price as a stand-in for today’s price, and do not assume a bundle is a better deal without checking its contents and local alternatives.

Check What to establish before purchase
Console model Exact model and, for disc games, whether it includes a disc drive.
Games Compatibility of each must-play title, edition, and physical or digital format.
Accessories Compatibility of the specific controllers, headset, camera, VR equipment, or storage device you intend to reuse.
Ongoing costs Games, subscription, extra hardware, storage, and tax in your region.
Offer Current retailer price, stock, and bundle contents for the exact model; availability and value vary by market and date.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Name your reason to buy: identify the games or play features that make you want the console now.
  2. Verify the games: check each title and edition on Sony’s or Nintendo’s official compatibility page.
  3. Match format to model: confirm disc-drive needs, digital account access, and any title-specific upgrade requirements.
  4. Audit your accessories: check official guidance for each item you expect to reuse.
  5. Calculate the complete local cost: include games, subscription, peripherals, storage, and tax; compare current regional listings.
  6. Decide whether waiting matters to you: distinguish a confirmed manufacturer announcement from speculation, and weigh a known library and current offer against uncertainty about future releases.
