Clicking a phishing link does not automatically mean your WhatsApp account was taken over. The correct response depends on what you can still control: if WhatsApp remains open on your phone, secure the account and remove unfamiliar linked devices; if WhatsApp says your number was registered elsewhere or you were logged out, re-register the number immediately with the code sent to your SIM.
Never give anyone your WhatsApp registration code or two-step verification credential. WhatsApp says re-registering your number is the recovery action that logs other devices out. Chat restoration is a separate issue and depends on whether a usable backup exists.

First, identify which situation you are in
A phishing attempt can target your WhatsApp credentials without successfully taking control of the account. Do not assume that opening a link proves an account takeover. Check WhatsApp itself before choosing a recovery path.
You are still signed in on your phone
If chats open normally and WhatsApp has not warned that your number was registered on another device, treat the event as a security warning rather than confirmed takeover. Move straight to the account-hardening checklist below and inspect linked devices for anything unfamiliar.

Being signed in is useful evidence, but it is not a reason to ignore the incident. Someone could have obtained a registration code, added a Web session, or attempted to impersonate you without immediately forcing you out. Review the account from the phone you normally use, not from a link in the suspicious message.
You have been logged out or your number was registered elsewhere
If WhatsApp displays a message that your phone number is being used on another phone, or you can no longer use the account, follow the re-registration procedure. This is the path WhatsApp specifies for taking back an account.
The phone, email account or mobile-carrier account may also be compromised
WhatsApp recovery addresses the WhatsApp account and the phone number used to register it. It does not by itself secure a stolen phone, a compromised email account or a carrier account that has been taken over. Those incidents need separate action with the relevant device maker, email provider or carrier. Do not treat successful WhatsApp re-registration as proof that those other accounts are safe.

For example, an unexpected loss of cellular service or an alert about a SIM change can indicate a carrier problem that must be handled by the carrier. Likewise, someone who controls the phone or its email account may still be able to interfere after WhatsApp access is restored. Keep the WhatsApp steps below, but pursue those separate remedies at the same time.
If you still have access to WhatsApp
Complete these steps from the official WhatsApp app. Menu names can vary slightly by operating system and app version. Work through the list in order and avoid signing in through a page reached from the phishing message.
1. Inspect and remove linked devices
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Open Settings and choose Linked devices (on some phones, this is available from the main menu).
- Review every active WhatsApp Web, desktop or companion-device session.
- Log out any device you do not recognize. If you are uncertain about a session, log it out and sign in again only on devices you control.
WhatsApp specifically recommends checking linked devices and allows active WhatsApp Web sessions to be logged out from the phone. A phishing page cannot be used as evidence of which device an attacker owns; the linked-device list is the useful account-level check.
Take a moment to compare each listed session with devices you actually use. An unfamiliar browser, computer or location is a reason to end that session, but the list is not a forensic record of everything that happened. Removing a session stops that active connection; it does not identify who used it or recover messages that may already have been viewed.

- In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Account, and select Two-step verification.
- Choose the option to enable it and follow the prompts shown in your version of the app.
- Keep the PIN or password private. Do not send it to a contact, “support agent” or person claiming to help.
WhatsApp describes two-step verification as an additional security layer and recommends enabling it. Meta announced in August 2026 that WhatsApp is upgrading this protection from a six-digit PIN to a longer password. The new wording and availability may differ during the rollout, so follow the credential type your app displays rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.
This credential is different from the six-digit registration code delivered by text or call. Both must be kept private. A person who asks for either one is not providing legitimate recovery assistance. Store the credential in a way you can retrieve later, while ensuring that other people cannot read it from your messages or notes.
3. Confirm that you are using the official app
Install WhatsApp only through the official app store for your device. WhatsApp warns that imitation versions create privacy and security risks. If you installed an unofficial build after following a link, remove it, install the official app and then review the account again. Do not enter a registration code into a website or an app that is not the official WhatsApp client.

An app that looks like WhatsApp, promises special features or asks you to bypass normal verification is not a safe recovery tool. Do not pay a third party that claims it can reveal an attacker, remove a PIN instantly or restore chats without a backup. WhatsApp’s documented recovery path uses your phone number and the code delivered to it.

If the phishing attempt may have exposed your account, notify family, friends and important group members through a channel you trust. Ask them to ignore unusual messages, money requests, login links or requests for verification codes that appear to come from you. This matters even when you are still signed in, because an attacker may try to impersonate you using a linked session or information obtained during the incident.
Keep the warning factual and short. Tell contacts not to send money or codes in response to a message from your account until they have confirmed it with you another way. If you regain access after being locked out, mention that messages sent during the gap may not have come from you.
5. Block or report the malicious contact and content
Use WhatsApp’s block and report controls for the account, message or group that delivered the phishing attempt. WhatsApp says users must perform those actions themselves; it cannot block or report an account on the user’s behalf. Preserve any details you need before deleting the conversation, such as the sender’s number and the message that led you to the page.
Do not confuse reporting a malicious contact with reporting the WhatsApp account you are trying to recover. WhatsApp cautions that reporting the compromised account before recovery can result in a ban and loss of access or data. Recover first when possible, then report the malicious material.
Blocking stops further contact from that account on your side, while reporting sends the relevant account or content through WhatsApp’s reporting mechanism. Neither action tells you who was behind the phishing attempt. Do not expect a report to substitute for re-registering a number that has been taken over.
6. Check whether a chat backup exists
Account access and message history are separate. A Google Account or iCloud backup created before the incident may allow chats to be restored, but WhatsApp does not promise restoration without a usable backup. Do not delete the app or reset the phone solely because you clicked a link; first make sure you understand which backup is available and which account stores it.
Signing in successfully does not recreate messages that were never backed up. A backup made after unwanted messages or account changes may not contain the earlier state you want. Treat backup restoration as a separate decision from securing the account, and do not hand your credentials to a service promising guaranteed recovery.
If you have lost access to the account
Use the phone number that originally belonged to the WhatsApp account and make sure you can receive a text message or voice call on that number. WhatsApp says account recovery requires access to the same SIM. If the SIM is missing, inactive or controlled by someone else, contact your mobile carrier to restore control of that number before attempting recovery.

A replacement SIM, if necessary, is issued by the carrier; WhatsApp’s guidance does not establish a particular carrier, price or retail product for this step. Re-register the number
- Open WhatsApp.
- Choose Log back in, then Continue, when those options appear.
- Enter the full international phone number if WhatsApp requests it. Include the country calling code.
- Enter the six-digit registration code delivered by SMS or phone call. In some cases WhatsApp may verify the number automatically instead of asking you to type the code.
WhatsApp says that re-registering the number logs out all other devices using the account. This is the stated action for removing someone who has taken over the account. A password change alone does not remove an attacker who is already inside; WhatsApp explicitly says changing a password is not a substitute for re-registering with the code sent to your number.
Allow the official app to complete the flow rather than repeatedly requesting codes from different devices. If an automatic verification option appears, follow that prompt. The exact screens can change as WhatsApp updates its account-security flow, but control of the original number remains the essential requirement.
Protect the registration code
Never share the six-digit registration code with anyone, including a friend or family member. Someone who asks for it may be trying to register your number on their own phone. WhatsApp’s guidance is unambiguous: the code is private and must remain under your control.

If a message creates urgency or claims that support needs to “verify” you, stop and use the app directly.
If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know
The person who took over the account may have enabled two-step verification. If WhatsApp asks for a PIN that you did not create or no longer know, do not guess repeatedly and do not pay a third-party “recovery” service. WhatsApp’s compromised-account guidance says to wait seven days and try again.
Entering the six-digit SMS registration code logs the other person out even when you do not know that two-step PIN. The PIN may still delay your own final sign-in, which is why the seven-day wait matters. Because WhatsApp is moving some accounts from PIN-based protection to longer passwords, the exact prompt and waiting language may change with the app version. Follow the current in-app instructions while keeping the registration code private.
The seven-day instruction is not permission to guess the credential or to create a second account on another number. Keep control of the SIM during the waiting period and retry through the official app when WhatsApp says you can. No outside service can legitimately bypass WhatsApp’s own verification requirement.
What to do immediately after you get back in
Re-registration disconnects other devices, but you should still inspect the account once your chats are visible. Apply the same security checklist used for an account that was never locked out:
- Open Linked devices and confirm that only devices you recognize remain connected.
- Enable or reconfigure Two-step verification using the credential type your app currently requests.
- Use the official WhatsApp app and remove unofficial copies.
- Warn contacts if messages could have been sent while someone else controlled the account.
- Block or report the phishing sender and any related content.
If you need old messages, restore only from a backup that existed before the incident and that belongs to the Google Account or iCloud account used for the backup. A successful login does not recreate messages that were never backed up.
Review group conversations and recent messages for impersonation attempts, payment requests or links that should not have been sent. Tell affected contacts what to disregard, but do not delete evidence you may need to describe the malicious sender or content. Account recovery ends the unauthorized session; it does not undo messages already delivered.

What the recovery process cannot tell you
WhatsApp says it cannot provide the identity of whoever accessed an account, or the time and location of that access. The linked-device list can show active sessions you can remove, but it is not an investigation report and may not reveal every past action.
Recovery also does not establish that your phone, email or carrier account is secure. If you noticed a sudden loss of mobile service, an unexpected SIM change, unfamiliar email-security alerts or signs that someone controls the phone itself, address that separate compromise with the appropriate provider. Keep the WhatsApp recovery steps focused on restoring the number and protecting the account.
Do not infer that an unfamiliar linked device proves a particular person’s identity, or that an empty list proves nothing happened. WhatsApp’s official guidance focuses on restoring access and securing the account, not on identifying an intruder or supplying a time-and-location report.

- Trusting urgency: A caller or message that demands an immediate code, payment or “verification” is a reason to pause and open WhatsApp yourself.
A practical decision path
Use this sequence to avoid mixing remedies:
- Can you open WhatsApp and read your chats? If yes, inspect linked devices, enable two-step verification, use the official app, warn contacts and block or report the phishing material.
- Did WhatsApp say the number was registered on another phone, or did you lose access? Re-register the same international number with the six-digit code delivered to your SIM or, where offered, the automatic verification flow.
- Is an unfamiliar two-step PIN blocking you? Wait seven days as WhatsApp instructs, then retry; do not share codes or use a third-party recovery service.
- Do you also suspect the phone, email or carrier? Treat that as a separate security incident and contact the relevant provider while maintaining control of the SIM needed for WhatsApp recovery.
- Do you need old chats? Check for a pre-incident Google Account or iCloud backup. Login recovery and message restoration are different processes.
WhatsApp’s Help Center is dynamic, and the transition from six-digit PINs to longer passwords means labels can change by rollout and app version. Read the prompt shown in your current official app, but keep the central rules unchanged: control the original phone number, protect every registration code and security credential, remove unknown sessions, and warn people who may be targeted through your account.
