For stronger Steam account protection, enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the official Steam Mobile app, save its recovery code somewhere secure, and add a phone number if you can. Steam Guard adds a second security layer beyond your password, but it cannot make an account invulnerable: keep every password and code private, approve only sign-ins you recognize, and plan for phone loss before changing devices.
What Steam Guard does
Steam Guard adds a second layer of security beyond your account name and password. With the mobile authenticator enabled, the app generates a code that changes every 30 seconds and can be used once. You can also use the app to approve a sign-in or scan a QR code instead of manually entering a code. Steam describes the feature in its Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator FAQ.

The other option is Steam Guard email codes. The mobile authenticator keeps sign-in approval in the app and gives you additional recovery and transfer options, but it also means you need a plan for losing or replacing your phone.

- Install the official Steam Mobile app and sign in to your Steam account.
- Open Steam Guard in the app and choose Add Authenticator.
- If you want to add a phone number, enter it and verify it as prompted. Steam says a phone number is not required to enable the authenticator, but it can provide recovery options.
- Write down the recovery code the app displays and keep it in a private, secure place separate from your phone. Do not skip this step.
Steam also lets you create additional backup codes from Account Details → Manage Steam Guard → Get Backup Codes. Steam requires SMS verification for this step and recommends printing the codes rather than saving them on a computer or taking a screenshot. Treat printed codes like passwords: store them where other people cannot access them.

Choose and check your sign-in method
Depending on the sign-in flow, you can scan a Steam QR code, approve a prompt in the app after entering your username and password, or enter the current Steam Guard code. For a QR sign-in request, inspect the details shown in the app—including the approximate location—before approving. Do not approve a request simply because it appeared on your phone.
- QR sign-in: Scan the code shown during sign-in, then review the request details before confirming.
- App approval: Enter your credentials, then approve only if you initiated the sign-in and recognize the request.
- Manual code: Enter the current code from Steam Guard when asked. Because it expires quickly and is single-use, never send it to another person.
Protect your password and codes
- Never share your Steam password, authenticator code, SMS code, or recovery code. Steam Support says it will never ask you for your password or authenticator code, and warns that it will never ask you for your codes.
- Enter your credentials and codes only on Valve-run sites. Be suspicious of unexpected links, messages, or requests to install software.
- Do not run programs suggested in unsolicited email or chat to “clean up” or “optimize” Steam.
- Keep access to the email account and phone number associated with Steam current, and store recovery information where you can reach it if your phone is lost.
Steam’s guidance on these practices is in its Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator FAQ. Steam Guard reduces the risk of someone signing in with only a stolen password; it does not remove the need to recognize phishing and protect your devices.
Understand trade and market restrictions
Enabling the authenticator does not immediately remove every trading restriction. Steam says trades or market listings created before you add the mobile authenticator, or within the first seven days afterward, are held for 15 days. Plan around that delay if you expect to trade or sell items.

If you still have the old authenticator
- Install Steam Mobile on the new phone and sign in to your account.
- Choose Move Authenticator and follow the in-app instructions, using the old authenticator if requested.
If you no longer have the authenticator but can receive SMS
In the app’s transfer flow, choose the option indicating that the authenticator is no longer accessible and follow the SMS steps for the phone number registered to your account. Steam says a transfer places a two-day restriction on trading and the Community Market.

Recover access if your phone is lost
If you have lost access to both the authenticator and phone, try to recover the phone number through your wireless provider first. If you cannot use the recovery code either, contact Steam Support to remove the authenticator; Steam may ask for proof that you own the account, particularly if you cannot access its associated email.
For a broader account lockout, start with Steam’s lost or forgotten account recovery guide. If automatic recovery does not work, follow the support intake process and provide as much proof of ownership as you can.
Remove the authenticator only when necessary
Removing Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is not a harmless shortcut for troubleshooting. Steam says removal reduces account security, returns sign-in protection to emailed Steam Guard codes, and prevents trading or selling items on the market for 15 days. Follow Steam’s authenticator removal instructions only if you intend to remove it and understand those consequences.
