You can protect PlayStation Network sign-in with a passkey or with two-step verification (2SV). They are separate sign-in methods, not two factors PlayStation documents as being used together: a passkey replaces the password-based sign-in flow, while 2SV adds a code after your password. Choose the method you can reliably access and recover, then follow the setup instructions below.
Choose a sign-in method
PlayStation describes passkeys as a password replacement. You sign in using a passkey saved on a supported device or available through its sync method. With 2SV, you enter your sign-in ID and password, then verify with a code delivered by text message or generated by an authenticator app.

| Consideration | Passkey | Two-step verification |
|---|---|---|
| What you use to sign in | A saved passkey on a supported device. | Your account sign-in details plus a code from SMS or an authenticator app. |
| What you need access to | The device holding the passkey or the service syncing it. | The registered phone or authenticator app; saved backup codes can help if those are unavailable. |
| Recovery route | If another device has the same verification method, use it to sign in and register a replacement passkey; otherwise contact PlayStation Support. | Use a saved one-time backup code. If you cannot access the registered device or a backup code, contact PlayStation Support. |
This is a comparison of PlayStation’s documented sign-in and recovery flows, not a measured security ranking. PlayStation recommends passkeys in its security guidance and also documents 2SV for accounts and devices where passkeys are not supported or chosen.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet up a passkey
From Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security and enable Sign in with Passkey.
- Select Create a Passkey, then follow the prompts on the device where you want to create or sync it. PlayStation says it sends an email confirmation when the passkey is created.
From a PS5
- Open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Scan the QR code shown on screen with your mobile device and complete passkey creation there.
To add or remove credentials later, go to Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys. PlayStation’s guide lists support for most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later, and recommends current Safari, Chrome or Edge versions for browser sign-in. Android users should check Google Play services compatibility; PlayStation advises against using an Android PIN as a passkey. Its guide also notes that some hardware security keys may have issues and suggests considering synced mobile passkeys instead. These notes do not guarantee compatibility for every device or credential manager. See PlayStation Support’s passkey setup guide for its current platform guidance.

Set up two-step verification
From Account Management
- Sign in to Account Management, open Security, and select Edit beside 2-step Verification Status.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- For SMS, enter your phone number. For an authenticator app, scan the displayed QR code; if it fails, enter the alphanumeric setup code in the app instead.
- Enter the verification code you receive or generate, then activate 2SV.
- Open Account Management > Security > Backup Codes and record the codes somewhere safe.
From a console
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
PlayStation says a 2SV code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, request another code. Its support instructions describe ten backup codes, each usable once. Keep them somewhere separate from your phone so they remain useful if the phone is lost. See the PlayStation 2SV setup guide.
Recover access if a device or code is unavailable
- You lost the phone used for 2SV: Use one of your saved backup codes. Each code works once.
- You have used most backup codes: PlayStation says you can get new codes by turning 2SV off and activating it again.
- You lost the phone holding your passkey but have another device with the same verification method: Sign in from that device and register a new passkey.
- You cannot use another passkey device, the registered 2SV phone, a backup code or your account email: Use PlayStation Support’s account-recovery or Online Assistant route.
- You receive unexpected 2SV messages or notice account changes: Treat this as an account-security issue and contact PlayStation Support through its official site.
PlayStation’s guides describe a Can’t Sign In with Passkey path that lets you sign in through email or QR code. If you still cannot access the account, follow the official 2SV troubleshooting and account recovery instructions. If you lose access to your phone and did not save backup codes, PlayStation says Support must help restore account access.

Keep the account and sign-in process safe
- Do not share your account details, and sign out after using someone else’s console.
- For passkey setup or sign-in, scan only a QR code displayed in an official PlayStation account or console flow. Do not scan codes sent by other people in messages promising vouchers, gift cards, in-game items or other offers.
- Use a recovery method you can reach. A password manager may help support good security practices, but PlayStation does not require a particular manager for the flows described here.
PlayStation’s security advice is available in its account security best-practices guide.
