Secure a home router by keeping its firmware supported and up to date, replacing default administrator credentials, choosing WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, and turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP when you do not need them. Check your router’s model-specific instructions or ask your internet provider for exact menus; labels and available controls vary.
1. Check whether your router is still supported
Find the manufacturer and model on the router’s label, in its companion app, or in its administration page. Look on the manufacturer’s or internet service provider’s support site for the device’s security-update and firmware information. ISP-provided routers may receive updates through the provider, so ask whether updates are sent automatically.

The FBI recommends replacing unsupported network devices with equipment whose vendors still provide security updates. If you cannot confirm the router’s support status, contact its manufacturer or ISP rather than assuming it is maintained.
2. Install firmware updates
Firmware is the software that runs the router. Updates can address vulnerabilities that affect the network, so use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions to install available updates. The FTC recommends checking for newer router software and registering for update notices where available; CISA also explains the security value of home-router firmware updates.

Update procedures vary by model. Follow the device’s documentation instead of installing firmware intended for another router.
3. Change the router administrator login
Replace default administrator credentials with a unique password, and change the default username too if the router permits it. This login controls router settings; it is different from the Wi-Fi password you enter on phones, computers, and other devices. Avoid credentials based on your name, address, or router brand. The FTC advises changing default router administrator credentials.

In the wireless security settings, choose WPA3 Personal if available. If it is not, choose WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best available encryption, while noting that WPA2 also encrypts network traffic: “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.”

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If the router offers only older WPA or WEP, first check for a firmware update. If WPA2 or WPA3 is still unavailable afterward, replace the router with a supported model that offers one of those modes. Do not treat an old security mode as equivalent to WPA2 or WPA3.
5. Disable remote management unless you need it
Remote management lets someone change router settings over the internet. Turn it off if you do not need to administer the router from outside your home. The FTC recommends disabling it, and the FBI likewise advises turning off remote management or administration on routers.

Look for a setting named “Remote Management,” “Remote Administration,” or similar in the router’s documentation or administration interface. If you rely on remote access, consult the manufacturer or ISP for the safest supported configuration rather than leaving a setting enabled by guesswork.
6. Review WPS and UPnP
The FTC recommends turning off WPS and UPnP because they can weaken network security. Check whether anyone in your household or any connected device depends on either feature before changing it.

| Feature | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| WPS | Connects devices to Wi-Fi without entering the network password. | Disable it if you do not need this connection method. Check your router and device documentation first if a device relies on WPS. |
| UPnP | Allows devices on your network to discover one another. | Disable it if your household does not need it. Check router and connected-device documentation for dependencies before changing the setting. |
7. Finish the basic network checks
- Set up a guest network: Give visitors a separate Wi-Fi login rather than sharing the primary network password. A guest network can help keep visitors’ devices apart from devices on your main network.
- Check the router firewall: Confirm it is enabled in the router’s settings.
- Secure connected devices too: Router settings do not secure every phone, computer, or smart device on the network. The FTC’s connected-device guidance covers steps for those devices.
Keep the router or replace it?
Continuing to use the router is reasonable when it remains supported, can receive security updates, and offers WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. Consider replacement if the device has reached end of life or still cannot offer either encryption mode after updates. This is a conditional security decision, not a reason every household needs a new router. Before replacing ISP-provided equipment, ask the provider about its support and replacement options.
