When a live-service game closes, you may lose online features, access to some purchased content, or access to the entire game. Some titles keep offline modes; refunds are not automatic. The outcome depends on the game’s shutdown plan, what you bought, who sold it, when you bought it, and the consumer laws that apply where you live.
Start with the publisher’s shutdown notice, then check the receipt or transaction history for each purchase. Those two steps help establish what is ending and which storefront or retailer to contact.

What a shutdown can mean for your purchases
A live-service game is not guaranteed to remain playable indefinitely just because you paid for it. If a game depends on publisher-run servers, closing those servers can make the game inaccessible. In other cases, the publisher ends online features but leaves offline modes available.

What three shutdowns show
These examples illustrate different outcomes; none sets a universal rule for other games.

How to check whether a specific purchase is refundable
- Read the game’s shutdown notice. Look for the service end date, whether the game itself will still launch, named offline modes, content that will stop working, and any refund arrangement. A title-specific offer may be different from the store’s usual policy.
- Identify the seller for each transaction. Check your receipt and platform transaction history. The publisher may not be able to refund a purchase made through a console store, PC storefront, or physical retailer. EA, for example, directs buyers who purchased through other stores to those sellers.
- Separate purchase types. Check the rules for the base game, DLC or a season pass, in-game currency or consumables, and a recurring subscription separately. They may have different eligibility criteria.
- Check the timing and use conditions. Note the purchase date, when the game or add-on was launched, and whether you downloaded, streamed, or used it. Store policies can make these details relevant.
- Contact the seller promptly. Submit the request through the seller’s refund process and include the game, item, transaction date, and shutdown notice. Keep the response and any case number.
Examples of storefront rules
For US PlayStation Store purchases, PlayStation’s guidance generally requires a refund request for a game or DLC within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. Its consumables guidance generally requires a request within 14 days, a PlayStation Store purchase, and that the game has not been launched after the purchase. These are examples of one storefront’s US procedures, not universal rules.

EA’s refund policy has eligibility windows tied to purchase and launch timing, with separate criteria for certain new releases that cannot be played for technical reasons. EA says separately purchased DLC and in-game currencies are not refundable through that policy. Its policy does not determine what another publisher, store, retailer, or local law will allow.
What consumer law can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single worldwide rule established here that guarantees every player a refund or requires every online game to remain playable forever. Store refund policies and consumer-law rights are not the same thing: a store’s normal process may not settle whether a legal remedy applies in a particular case.

In an April 5, 2024 answer about The Crew, the European Parliament described EU consumer rules that provide remedies when digital content or a service does not conform to the contract. Under Directive (EU) 2019/770, remedies can include bringing the content or service into conformity or, when that will not happen, a proportionate price reduction or contract termination. The Parliament also said EU rules do not specify how long online video games must be provided. National law implements the directive, and national authorities and courts handle individual disputes.
In a communication dated June 16, 2026, the European Commission said it could not at that stage propose a general legal obligation to keep games playable after they stop being commercially provided, citing intellectual-property rights. The Commission also pointed to existing EU consumer safeguards, including information about contract duration and termination conditions, and said consumers may be entitled to proportionate refunds. That communication states the Commission’s policy position; it does not decide an individual player’s claim.

For a dispute, check the consumer-protection authority and law for your country or region. The US platform examples above describe storefront procedures; they do not resolve every state or federal legal question.
