If you can still get into the account, change its password, close other active sessions, check recovery details, and turn on two-factor authentication. A notice that data was exposed is not, by itself, proof that anyone logged in; first work out whether the alert describes an account takeover, exposed information, or both.
First, identify what happened
“Privacy breach” can mean several different things: an unfamiliar login, a stolen or reused password, a takeover that locks you out, or a notice that personal information was exposed. Those situations overlap, but one does not automatically prove the others. Check the breach notice and Facebook account alerts for what was involved, and look for signs of access you did not authorize.

- An unexpected password or contact-detail change
- A login notification you do not recognize
- Being unable to sign in, or finding that recovery details have changed
- Friends reporting messages you did not send
These signs suggest someone may have accessed the account; they do not establish what information the person viewed or copied. The FTC’s hacked-account guidance describes these warning signs and recovery steps.

If you are locked out, use Facebook’s recovery route
Open facebook.com/hacked by typing the address yourself, rather than following a link in an unsolicited message. Meta recommends using a device you have previously used to log in. Follow the prompts to recover the account and review any changed account details. Do not give a password or verification code to anyone who contacts you claiming to be support.

If you can still sign in, secure access in this order
- Set a new, unique Facebook password. Do not reuse an existing password or a close variation. If you used the exposed password on another service, change it there too; attackers may try credentials from one breach on other accounts. The FTC recommends changing a password promptly when it may have been exposed in a breach.
- Sign out other sessions. Use Facebook’s security or password-and-security settings to end sessions you do not recognize, so a person signed in on another device loses access.
- Check recovery information. Confirm that the email addresses and phone numbers on the account belong to you and that you can access them. Remove unfamiliar details and secure those email accounts as well.
- Review account activity. Check recent messages, posts, new friends, and other changes for activity you did not make. If suspicious messages went to your contacts, warn them through another trusted channel not to click links or respond to requests for money.
If you cannot find a setting under the label described here, look in the current Accounts Center or Facebook security settings; labels and locations can change.
Turn on two-factor authentication and login alerts
Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires a second check in addition to your password. Facebook lists 2FA and login alerts among its account security features. Setup for a security key is documented at Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication; the interface may vary.

Facebook’s advanced-protection guidance lists security keys, authentication-app codes, and SMS as possible methods. Which options appear can depend on the account and current interface. When choosing, consider whether the method works with your devices and browser, whether you can reach it while traveling or after losing a device, and how well it resists phishing or credential theft.
- Security key: A physical key can provide a strong second factor, but it must be compatible with your device and browser and registered to the account before it protects you. Facebook says users obtain their own third-party U2F or FIDO2 key.
- Authentication app: Generates sign-in codes on a device. Keep access to the device in mind when planning for loss or replacement.
- SMS: Sends a code by text, which may be convenient but depends on access to the associated phone number.
Never share a verification code with someone who contacted you unexpectedly. For setup details, see Facebook’s security-key instructions and the FTC’s overview of two-factor authentication.

Review what your profile makes visible
After securing sign-in, use Facebook’s Privacy Checkup and Audience and visibility settings to review the audience for posts and profile details, how people can find or contact you, followers and public content, and profile and tagging controls. Meta’s privacy guidance and information about scraping explain why it is worth checking what is public and setting visibility to match your intentions.
Privacy settings can limit future exposure, but they cannot guarantee that another person has deleted information already copied or shared. If the notice identifies information beyond Facebook login access—such as identity or financial details—use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov breach-response resource for steps tailored to what was exposed.

Scan your device only if there is a reason to suspect compromise
A Facebook account takeover alone does not show that your phone or computer has malware. If you installed suspicious software, opened a malicious attachment, or have other signs the device may be compromised, update its security software and run a scan. The FTC includes those conditional steps in its account-recovery guidance; a paid security product is not a required Facebook recovery step.
