To see what a robotaxi app collects and shares, start with the privacy notice linked from the exact app or ride flow you use. Confirm that it covers the operator, service, and region in question, then check phone permissions, in-app controls, trip-history and account tools, and the notice’s descriptions of data recipients and purposes. One ride may involve more than one company and more than one privacy notice.
1. Find the notice that covers your ride
Look in the app’s privacy section, sign-up or ride-request flow, and linked help pages. Check whether each notice covers the operator’s app, a ride-hailing platform, the ride itself, or data collected by the vehicle. These are not necessarily the same activity.

For example, Uber links to autonomous-vehicle partners’ privacy policies. Its road-data collection notice says it does not describe data collected when someone requests or receives a ride through Uber. Also check the notice’s geographic and service scope. A policy for one operator, app, or region does not automatically describe another. 2. Search for the kinds of data the ride can generate
Use the notice’s headings or page search to look for these categories. Pay attention to the examples under each category; “location” or “vehicle data” can cover more than one thing.
Account, payment, and support

Phone location and trip details
Distinguish the phone’s location from information about the ride. Notices may describe precise or approximate device location, pickup and drop-off points, route, timestamps, distance, vehicle or service type, and trip history. Waymo describes pickup and drop-off locations, route details, and device location during a trip; Tesla describes trip details including destinations, time, distance, vehicle, service type, and rating. Device and app information
Check for device identifiers, app activity, diagnostics, connectivity, and analytics. Tesla’s notice lists device information and app-use analytics for reliability and troubleshooting. Cabin recordings and vehicle data
Search for cabin camera, audio or sound detection, vehicle sensors, and touchscreen or infotainment activity. The circumstances matter: ordinary operation, a safety event, a support call, research, and an optional product-improvement setting may be treated differently. Waymo’s policy gives in-vehicle video and audio during active support calls as examples. Recipients and reasons for sharing
Look for service providers, affiliates, analytics or advertising partners, ride or technology partners, legal disclosures, and safety-related sharing. Read the stated purpose next to each category and note whether the operator says information is linked to an account, deidentified, or otherwise restricted. 3. Check the controls separately from the policy
A privacy notice describes practices; settings and permissions show which choices are available to you. Check the phone and the app independently.

Review phone location permission
In your phone’s app-permission settings, check whether location access is allowed only while using the app or at other times, and whether precise location is enabled. The exact menu wording varies by phone and operating-system version. Uber says it asks for location permission and describes using location while the app is visible or during a requested ride. Inspect recording and sharing options
Within the app, look for camera, sound, analytics, research, or product-improvement settings. Tesla’s notice provides a path for cabin-camera analytics and describes optional sharing, while noting that early-access riders may be subject to additional collection practices. Find trip-history and account actions
Check whether the app lets you view or edit trip history, update account information, download data, delete the account, or submit a privacy request. Waymo says riders can view or edit trip history, change location permissions, delete an account, and download or request deletion of personal information. 4. Use app-store labels as a cross-check, not a complete answer
Store privacy disclosures can help you spot declared collection or sharing, but they are not a substitute for the relevant notice. Google Play’s Zoox listing declares no third-party sharing, possible collection of personal information and device or other IDs, encryption in transit, and an option to request deletion. Google says this information is supplied by the developer, may vary with use, region, and age, and can be updated. If you are evaluating services, use the same checklist for each rather than ranking them by a single label or phrase.
- Does the notice cover the app, ride, vehicle collection, and region you care about?
- Does it describe precise or background phone location, and when that access occurs?
- What trip details are collected, and what does the notice say about trip-history access or retention?
- Are cabin audio, video, or analytics collected by default, for specific events, or only with an opt-in?
- Which recipient categories are named, and what purposes are given for sharing?
- Can you change permissions, access or correct account information, download data, and request deletion?
Record the notice date and the relevant app or service version when comparing. Practices, settings, and store labels can change, so compare current materials rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic company policy.
