To enable Airbnb’s two-factor authentication (2FA), open Menu > Account settings > Login & security, select Set up now, verify a phone number by SMS or call, then create a PIN and security questions. You’ll need access to a phone number saved on your account.
What you need before setup
- A current phone number on your Airbnb account that can receive SMS messages or voice calls. Check it under Personal info before starting.
- A way to remember your PIN and security-question answers. You may need them when confirming a protected action.
Airbnb warns that some account areas may be unavailable if you do not have a capable phone number attached. Its instructions are presented for desktop, with separate versions for iOS, Android, and mobile browsers; the exact screen labels may differ. In the app, look for Login & security in account settings. Airbnb’s two-factor authentication instructions describe the setup.

How to turn on Airbnb two-factor authentication
- In Airbnb, open Menu > Account settings > Login & security.
- In the two-factor authentication setup banner, choose Set up now.
- Choose SMS or a phone call, then enter the one-time code Airbnb sends to your account phone number.
- Create a personal identification number (PIN).
- Add security questions and answers, then complete the setup.
What happens when Airbnb asks you to verify?
For an action that requires 2FA, Airbnb sends a one-time code to the phone number associated with your account. You enter that code, then confirm your identity using your PIN or security questions. Airbnb says 2FA may be required for certain account areas and is required for hosts in the European Economic Area (EEA). Requirements are not necessarily the same for every user or location. Airbnb also uses the term Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) in connection with a European payment regulation.

Device authentication on supported devices
After setup, some devices may let you authenticate with the method you use to unlock that device, such as a fingerprint, face recognition, or device passcode. This option is not available the first time you log in from a new device: Airbnb says that first login requires a code and PIN. You can deactivate device authentication in Login & security.

How to change your 2FA phone number or recover access
Airbnb requires you to pass 2FA before changing the phone number on your account. If you cannot access any number listed there, use Need Help on the verification screen and submit a request. Airbnb says it will get in touch within 12–24 hours so you can add a new number; that is its stated response window, not a guaranteed resolution time.
If you forgot your PIN
Select Forgot PIN on the verification screen and answer your security questions. If you cannot provide the PIN or the answers, select Need Help. Airbnb says it will respond within 12–24 hours and you should be prepared to update your PIN. See Airbnb’s recovery instructions.

If you do not receive a passcode
Confirm that you selected the right SMS or call option and that the phone number saved under Personal info is current and can receive that type of message. If you cannot access any number on the account, use Need Help on the verification screen rather than attempting to change the number before verifying.
Passkeys are a separate sign-in option
Airbnb passkeys are distinct from the SMS-or-call 2FA setup. On supported devices, a passkey uses the device’s fingerprint, face scan, or PIN; Airbnb says the device sends a special code without a password or one-time passcode. Passkeys can be added or removed in Login & security and may be used to log in or authenticate some actions. They may not be available on every device. Secure your account beyond 2FA
Use a unique password
Choose a password you do not reuse for email, banking, or social accounts. Airbnb recommends using a password manager to store and organize passwords, but does not endorse a particular provider. Its guidance is at Create a strong password.
Review unfamiliar logins and devices
Airbnb login notifications for an unfamiliar browser or device can show the browser or device, time, and location. Device history is also available in account security settings. Respond promptly to suspected unauthorized access
- Change your Airbnb password and review login and device history.
- Check contact details, profile photos, listings, payout methods, and reservations for changes you did not make.
- Contact Airbnb if you find anything wrong. If the compromised password was reused elsewhere, change it on those sites too.

Go directly to the Airbnb app or website instead of following a questionable link, and check a website’s destination before signing in. Report suspicious communications and keep payments and conversations on Airbnb. If you shared personal information, contact Airbnb directly; if you shared payment information, contact your bank or financial institution too. Airbnb also recommends keeping software up to date, using trusted antivirus software, and avoiding unexpected links or attachments.
