The strongest WhatsApp setup combines four habits: keep the phone-number registration code private, turn on two-step verification, add and verify a recovery email, and create a passkey protected by your phone’s fingerprint, face recognition, or screen lock. Then review linked devices regularly.
Two-step verification and a passkey are complementary. Neither removes the need to control the WhatsApp phone number and its active SIM, and neither can recover an account that someone else already controls. Start only when you can open the account and receive codes for its number.

What each WhatsApp security feature protects
WhatsApp uses several separate checks. Confusing them is a common reason people disclose a code or assume a passkey can replace their phone number.
| Protection | What it verifies | What it depends on | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration code | Control of the phone number when registering or registering again. It is normally sent by SMS or voice call. | The number’s active SIM or another supported verification route for an existing account. | It is not your two-step password, and it does not protect you if you give the code to somebody else. |
| Two-step verification | An additional account check after successful number registration. | A password on newer accounts, or a six-digit PIN on accounts that have not yet received the password upgrade. An optional recovery email can help reset the method. | It cannot restore an account that has already been taken over or remove an intruder. |
| Passkey | Authentication through the device security system. | The phone’s fingerprint, face recognition, or screen lock. | It does not replace number registration, an active SIM, or the registration code. |
| Verified email | A recovery and, for an existing account, possible login route. | An email address you control and an active SIM with the WhatsApp number still in the device when WhatsApp requires an email login code. | Email alone cannot recover access when the phone number or SIM is unavailable. |
| Linked devices | Sessions where the WhatsApp account is open on another phone, computer, or tablet. | Access to the logged-in WhatsApp account. | The list does not tell you who used a session or exactly when or where access occurred. |
WhatsApp describes two-step verification as an optional feature that adds more security to the account. Its current guidance also says the six-digit PIN is being upgraded to a password, so two accounts can show different wording during the transition.

Check these prerequisites first
- You can open the WhatsApp account. Additional protections require an account you currently control. If somebody else is already using it, recover the account before changing settings.
- The correct SIM is active. Keep the SIM for the WhatsApp number in the device, particularly if you expect to use an email code during login.
- WhatsApp is up to date. Install the current release from your phone’s official app store. Security menus and passkey support are delivered through the app and its current rollout.
- Your phone has a screen lock or biometric unlock. A passkey relies on the device security system, so set up a fingerprint, face unlock, or a strong screen-lock code first.
- You have an email address you still control. You will need to open that mailbox and complete verification. Do not use a shared or abandoned address.
Menu names can differ between Android and iPhone, between app versions, and during WhatsApp’s gradual account-interface changes. Some accounts may show the traditional Account wording while others show a newer Meta Account label. If a label differs, use the closest current in-app prompt rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Set up two-step verification
- Open account security settings. In WhatsApp, open Settings, choose Account, and select Two-step verification. If your version presents a revised account menu, use the entry that contains Two-step verification.
- Start the setup. Choose to enable the feature and follow the on-screen request for a password or PIN. Newer rollouts may ask for a password; existing accounts can still ask for a six-digit PIN.
- Create a secret you can retrieve safely. Do not use the WhatsApp registration code as your two-step secret. Do not send the password or PIN to anyone, including someone claiming to be WhatsApp support.
- Finish the confirmation screens. WhatsApp may ask you to enter the new secret again. Complete that confirmation before leaving settings.
- Record it securely. Store the password or PIN in a private place you can access without exposing it in messages or screenshots. If WhatsApp later offers the PIN-to-password upgrade, follow the in-app conversion rather than trying to treat the old PIN as a password.
Number registration happens first: WhatsApp sends a six-digit registration code by SMS or call, and the two-step check follows as a separate account safeguard. The two codes have different purposes and must both remain private.
Add and verify a recovery email
- Remain signed in to WhatsApp and return to Settings, Account, and Two-step verification.
- Choose the option to add an email address, then enter an address that only you control.
- Check the mailbox for WhatsApp’s verification message or code and complete the prompt in the app.
- Return to the two-step-verification screen and confirm that the address is shown as verified.
A verified email can support login to an existing account and help reset the two-step-verification method. It is not a substitute for the phone number. WhatsApp says an active SIM containing the account’s number must still be in the device when email verification codes are used for login, so an email address cannot rescue an account after the number or SIM has been lost.

- With the number registered and your profile set up, open WhatsApp Settings and Account.
- Choose Passkeys, then select the command to create or add a passkey. The exact label and location can vary by platform and rollout.
- Approve the phone’s security prompt with the fingerprint, face recognition, or screen-lock method already configured on the device.
- Wait for WhatsApp to confirm that the passkey was created. If the operating system asks where to save the credential, follow its current instructions and keep the device lock enabled.
WhatsApp says a passkey links the account to the device’s security system and enables faster login when two-step verification is on. It is an authentication method built into the phone; the official guidance does not require a separate hardware key or biometric accessory.

Review linked devices immediately
After enabling the protections, open WhatsApp’s Linked devices screen from Settings. Read every listed session and choose Log out for anything you do not recognize or no longer use. WhatsApp recommends checking this list regularly, not only after a security warning.
The list is an account-hygiene tool, not an investigation log. WhatsApp’s Help Center says it cannot provide who accessed an account or when or where the access happened. If a session is unfamiliar, log it out, recover the account if necessary, and then recheck the list after the account is secure.
How the sign-in checks work together
- Number registration: You enter the phone number and receive the six-digit registration code by SMS or call. For an existing account with a previously verified email, WhatsApp may offer an email-based route, but the active SIM requirement still applies.
- Additional account authentication: When two-step verification is requested, enter the account’s password or six-digit PIN. This is not the registration code.
- Faster device authentication: When a passkey is available and two-step verification is enabled, approve the passkey with the phone’s fingerprint, face, or screen lock. It makes the authentication step faster; it does not eliminate number ownership checks.
Because these checks rely on different things, enabling all of them gives you more than one barrier: the phone-number registration step, an account secret, and the phone’s local security system. Keep the recovery email current so it can help with the two-step method if you forget it.
Can a passkey replace two-step verification?
No. WhatsApp presents passkeys and two-step verification as additional, complementary protections. A passkey proves that you can unlock a device holding the passkey; two-step verification adds an account-level password or PIN after number registration. Continue using both when your account offers both options.

A passkey also does not replace the registration code. Re-registering the number, changing phones, or recovering an existing account can still require control of the number and its active SIM. Treat the passkey as a faster way to authenticate on a prepared device, not as a universal bypass.
Recovery procedures for common situations
You are still signed in but forgot the two-step password or PIN
Do not sign out in an attempt to test the account. Open the two-step-verification settings while access remains available and use the current recovery-email option or reset prompt. The exact screens depend on whether your account has already moved from a PIN to a password. If no verified email is available, follow WhatsApp’s current waiting or reset instructions rather than guessing repeatedly.
You lost the phone but still control the number
Put the active SIM for the WhatsApp number into a replacement phone, install WhatsApp, and complete number registration with the SMS or call code. Then enter the two-step password or PIN when requested, create a new passkey on the replacement device, and inspect Linked devices. A passkey stored on the lost phone is not a reason to keep an unknown session active.
You lost the number or cannot access its SIM
Email alone cannot restore this situation. WhatsApp requires the active SIM for the account’s number for email-code login, so first work with the mobile carrier to regain control of the number. Until number control is restored, do not assume that a verified email or passkey can complete re-registration.

You suspect someone took over the account
- Prioritize account recovery and re-register the number using the official WhatsApp flow.
- Once you are back in, enable two-step verification, verify the recovery email, and create a passkey.
- Open Linked devices and log out every session you do not recognize.
- Warn contacts through a trusted channel if messages may have been sent from the compromised account.
Turning on security features after a takeover cannot restore lost access or remove a person who is already using the account. Recovery comes first; hardening the account comes immediately afterward.
The number previously belonged to someone else
A recycled phone number can carry the previous owner’s two-step verification. After you successfully register the number, WhatsApp may require a seven-day wait before that two-step method can be reset. This delay applies to the specific previous-owner scenario; it is not a general waiting period for every WhatsApp account.

The two-step-verification menu is missing
Update WhatsApp, confirm that you are looking under Account rather than a device-wide privacy menu, and reopen the app. Rollouts can change labels, and some accounts may show a revised account-management name. If the option still does not appear, use WhatsApp’s current platform-specific Help Center instructions instead of relying on an older screenshot.

The app asks for a PIN when you expected a password
Your account may not have received the PIN-to-password upgrade yet. Use the six-digit PIN flow shown by WhatsApp and never enter the registration code in its place. Upgrade only when the app presents an official conversion prompt.
Best Value
Passkey creation stops at the phone-security prompt
Confirm that a screen lock or biometric unlock is enabled, that you can unlock the phone normally, and that WhatsApp is current. Then retry from the Passkeys entry in Account settings. If the menu or wording differs, follow the live prompt for your platform; the exact button sequence is not identical on every device.
The email verification message does not arrive
Check the address for typing errors, inspect spam and filtered folders, and use the resend option only after the app’s displayed wait period. Do not add an address you cannot open. After verification, return to Two-step verification and confirm that WhatsApp marks the address as verified.
An unfamiliar linked device keeps appearing
Log out the session, complete account recovery if access is questionable, and change or reset the two-step method through the available recovery route. Re-registering the number and checking Linked devices are more important than trying to identify the person behind the session; WhatsApp does not provide an access-history report naming who used it.

- Never share the six-digit registration code, the two-step password, or the two-step PIN.
- Keep the phone’s screen lock and biometric settings enabled; a passkey is only as strong as the local device-unlock protection.
- Keep the recovery email current and verify it while you are still signed in.
- Review Linked devices on a regular schedule and log out sessions you no longer need.
- Be cautious of urgent messages asking you to read back a code or approve a login. WhatsApp’s security checks are designed for you to enter privately in the app.
- When changing phones or numbers, plan the migration while you still have the old SIM and account access.
What this setup can and cannot guarantee
Two-step verification, a verified email, a passkey, and linked-device reviews reduce the chance that a stolen registration code or unattended session becomes permanent account access. They do not make the phone number irrelevant, disclose an attacker’s identity, or provide a way around an unavailable SIM.
The practical target is layered control: protect the registration code, add the account password or PIN, bind a passkey to a locked device, maintain a verified recovery email, and remove unknown sessions. Recheck the menus after app updates because WhatsApp is still rolling out the change from PIN wording to password wording and is gradually changing account labels.
