Secure your router and device accounts first, then keep camera firmware and companion apps updated. Replace factory-set passwords with unique ones, enable multifactor authentication (MFA) when available, and consider a guest or dedicated IoT network if your router can isolate it without disrupting the camera features you use.
Secure your router first
Your router connects the devices on your home network, so its security affects more than Wi-Fi access. CISA calls a home wireless router “the primary entrance for cybercriminals to access all of your connected devices” in its 5 Steps to Protecting Your Digital Home.

- Change the router’s default administrator username or password if the interface allows it. Do not confuse this administrator login with the Wi-Fi password; they protect different things.
- Set a strong Wi-Fi passphrase that is not reused for another account.
- Install supported router firmware updates, and enable automatic updates if your router offers them.
Router menus and update procedures vary by manufacturer and model, so use the router’s current documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path. If the router is no longer supported, check the vendor’s support notice and consider replacing it; an unsupported router may not receive fixes for newly discovered security issues.

Change factory-set credentials on cameras and other connected devices. Give each account a distinct, hard-to-guess password, and turn on MFA for the camera or cloud account if the vendor provides it. A password manager can help you keep passwords unique without having to memorize each one. CISA’s consumer guidance recommends changing default credentials and using MFA where available.

- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
- Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
Use the official companion app from the camera vendor or a trusted app store. In the app’s privacy or permissions settings, remove access the camera does not need for the functions you use. The available permissions and their labels vary by phone and app.
Keep the router, camera firmware, and apps updated
Install available security and software updates for the router, camera, and companion app. Turn on automatic updates where offered, but check the vendor’s support information if updates stop appearing. App updates and camera firmware updates are separate: updating the app does not necessarily update the camera itself.

To find out whether a camera is still supported, look up its exact model on the manufacturer’s support site and check for an end-of-support notice or the latest firmware release. If the vendor has ended support, do not assume the device will continue receiving security patches. Consider replacing it, particularly if it is exposed to the internet or holds sensitive footage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould smart home devices be on a separate network?
A separate guest Wi-Fi or dedicated IoT network can limit how easily connected devices reach computers and other devices on your main network. CISA describes guest Wi-Fi as one potentially simple way to group home devices separately in its Network Segmentation guidance. This is a useful risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee: guest-network behavior differs between routers, and not every guest network blocks devices from reaching one another.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
| Option | What to check | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Guest Wi-Fi | Whether the router isolates guests from your main network and from other guest devices. | A camera, phone app, hub, or local recorder may not communicate as expected across network boundaries. |
| Dedicated IoT network | Whether it isolates IoT devices from computers and controls device-to-device access in the way you need. | Setup and maintenance may require more router configuration; compatibility with camera features depends on the devices and network settings. |
Before moving a camera, check whether its app, hub, or local recording system needs to be on the same network. Test the features you rely on, such as viewing the live feed or accessing local recordings. Consult the router and camera manuals for model-specific instructions. CISA’s segmentation advice describes the general principle; it does not establish that every router’s guest network provides the same isolation.

Avoid exposing router or camera administration interfaces directly to the public internet. Camera remote-viewing options differ by model, so use the current manual to understand what a setting does before changing it; a general checklist cannot establish the right configuration for every camera.
