Secure RMM software as a privileged control plane: it can monitor endpoints and administer systems across multiple customer environments, so a compromise may reach beyond one client. MSPs should test eight safeguards—not just whether the console has a login: MFA, least privilege, separation, approved access paths, activity monitoring, protected logs, recoverable backups, and incident response.
Why RMM needs control-plane security
Remote monitoring and management (RMM) combines ongoing endpoint visibility with the ability to perform remote administration. That reach makes it useful to an MSP and consequential if an account, endpoint, or tool is compromised. Security checks should establish three things: access is constrained, activity is observable, and services and data can be recovered.

Use the following controls to assess an implementation. Exact settings and capabilities differ by platform and architecture; verify them against the vendor’s current documentation and your own environment.
1. Require MFA on every route into customer systems
Require multifactor authentication for every identity that can reach customer environments, and treat MSP identities as privileged. Where both the identity provider and the RMM workflow support it, prefer phishing-resistant authentication such as FIDO authentication. A FIDO2 security key may be an option, but confirm compatibility with the identity provider and each relevant login flow rather than assuming universal support.

Test every route, not only the primary console sign-in:
- Console and technician logins
- APIs and service or automation identities
- Remote-access routes
- Break-glass accounts
- Password reset, account recovery, and other fallback paths
Record any route that bypasses MFA, who can use it, and what compensating controls or remediation apply.
2. Limit permissions and scope them to customers
Grant permissions according to job and task. Use read-only or reduced-privilege roles for routine monitoring when the platform offers them. Avoid broad enterprise or domain administrator membership where narrower access can do the job.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test permissions with representative accounts:
- Confirm monitoring users cannot execute administrative actions.
- Confirm technicians can access only the customer systems they manage.
- Check whether a role, group, or automation account can cross customer boundaries.
Document the intended permissions and compare them with effective access; role names alone do not demonstrate that access is appropriately constrained.
3. Separate customer environments and the MSP network
Separate customer datasets and services from one another and from the MSP’s internal network. Map and review connections among customer systems, provider systems, and client enclaves, then verify that the boundaries work in practice.
Test the consequence of a compromised account or endpoint: could it reach another customer’s environment or MSP infrastructure? Identify and correct paths that allow unnecessary cross-tenant or internal access. Separation limits potential reach; it does not replace MFA, least privilege, or monitoring.

4. Allow only approved remote-access paths
Maintain an inventory of authorized RMM and other remote-access software. Confirm that approved RMM is used only through approved access paths, such as a VPN or virtual desktop interface, where that matches the organization’s design. At network boundaries, restrict unnecessary inbound and outbound RMM ports and protocols.

Compare the inventory and approved paths with observed software and network activity. Investigate tools or routes that are not authorized rather than treating every remote-access connection as legitimate because it is technically functional.
5. Monitor RMM activity for abnormal use
Review execution and access logs for unexpected tools, unusual accounts, and portable execution. Establish a baseline of normal RMM activity and create alerts for suspicious departures from it. Monitoring should help answer who accessed which systems, what actions or tools were used, and when the activity occurred.
Test alerts with safe, authorized scenarios and confirm that someone receives and acts on them. An alert that is not routed to an owner is not an effective detection control.
6. Centralize logs and protect them from tampering
Centralize useful system, user, administrator, application, and network logs so that evidence is not confined to the RMM platform or an endpoint an attacker may control. Alert on high-risk activity such as failed logins and privilege escalation, and restrict who can alter or delete log records.

7. Keep isolated backups and prove recovery works
Back up critical data and system configurations automatically and continuously. Keep a copy isolated or air-gapped from the organizational network, and test recovery rather than relying on backup-job success messages alone.
Use recovery objectives to set the appropriate recovery cadence and test scope. Record what was restored, how long restoration took, and any dependencies or access needed to bring RMM-supported services back. CISA identifies protected backups as a safeguard for MSPs and their customers; the appropriate recovery schedule depends on the organization’s objectives.
8. Rehearse containment and customer notification
Define who has authority and responsibility to disable or contain RMM access, preserve evidence, contact affected customers, and notify the appropriate response team. Make sure the response plan covers the provider-customer relationship, not only the MSP’s internal escalation chain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet provider monitoring and incident-notification expectations in customer contracts, including how relevant visibility and notice will be handled. Rehearse the process so responders know how to contain access without losing needed evidence and how to reach the right customer contacts.
How to assess an RMM implementation
For a review of one platform or a comparison of two configurations, score the evidence rather than relying on product labels. A useful review records whether each safeguard is present, how it was tested, and any unresolved gap.
- MFA coverage across console, APIs, remote access, break-glass, and recovery paths; phishing resistance where supported
- Role granularity and customer scoping, including tested limits on administrative actions
- Tenant and network isolation between customers and the MSP
- Approved software and access paths, with unnecessary ports and protocols restricted
- Audit-log coverage, retention, alerting, and tamper resistance
- Backup isolation and evidence from recovery tests
- Containment authority, customer notification, and incident-readiness arrangements
These controls provide a way to examine an implementation; they do not rank named RMM products or establish vendor feature scores. Product-specific capabilities and settings should be checked in current vendor documentation.
