Microsoft has officially announced Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console project, but most of the detailed specifications circulating online remain unconfirmed. Xbox says Helix will play Xbox console and PC games, use a custom AMD chip, and focus on a major leap in ray tracing. Developers are expected to receive alpha hardware beginning in 2027; Microsoft has not announced a retail release date or price.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the next Xbox
Project Helix is the name Microsoft has given its next-generation first-party Xbox console project. Xbox says it is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of next generation, described it as a system intended to deliver “leading performance” and usher in the next generation of console gaming. Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 GDC announcement is the primary source for these platform details.

Custom AMD silicon and graphics goals
Microsoft says Helix will be powered by a custom AMD SoC, co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FSR. Xbox also says the system “delivers an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” with intelligence integrated into its graphics and compute pipeline. These are Microsoft’s stated design goals, not independently measured results: the announcement does not give benchmarks or explain the final chip configuration.
Backward compatibility commitment
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. That is a broad platform commitment, not a published list confirming that every game or accessory will work. Specific game-by-game compatibility details have not been provided in the cited announcement.

What are the rumored upgrades to the new Xbox?
The most widely circulated hardware figures stem from a July 2025 report about an alleged AMD APU codenamed Magnus. Tom’s Guide reported that the leak, attributed to Moore’s Law Is Dead, described a 264 mm² graphics die, a 384-bit memory bus, and 11 CPU cores arranged as three Zen 6 cores plus eight Zen 6 cores.
Those numbers are not confirmed Project Helix specifications. The report said the chip might be intended for either the next Xbox or PlayStation 6, and discussed a separate leaker’s view that Magnus could be the Xbox chip. It also cautioned against treating the claims as gospel. Microsoft’s later confirmation that Helix uses a custom AMD SoC does not verify the Magnus codename, those figures, or whether that leak describes the final retail console.

When is the next Xbox coming out?
Xbox plans to ship alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. This is a developer hardware schedule, not a consumer launch date. Windows Central reported in February 2026 that AMD CEO Lisa Su said the semi-custom SoC was progressing to support a 2027 launch, while describing that timing as a best-case scenario and reporting that Microsoft had not made a firm internal commitment. That report does not turn the developer alpha schedule into a confirmed retail window.

How Project Helix fits Xbox’s wider strategy
Microsoft presents Helix as part of a broader Xbox hardware direction spanning consoles, handhelds, PCs, cloud gaming, and accessories, with AMD co-engineering silicon across the portfolio. Xbox’s GDC announcement also says Xbox Mode will begin rolling out to Windows 11 in select markets from April 2026. Microsoft describes it as a full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience that retains Windows’ openness.
That Windows feature is part of the surrounding platform strategy, not evidence that Project Helix runs a standard desktop version of Windows or supports every PC storefront. The official Helix announcement confirms a goal of playing Xbox console and PC games but does not identify specific PC stores or explain how access will work.
