No model or single setting makes an agent safe: the key is to reduce the permissions and secrets available if it follows a malicious instruction.
What OpenClaw security depends on
OpenClaw’s security model assumes one trusted operator, or a mutually trusting team, per Gateway. It is not designed to be a hostile multi-tenant boundary for people with conflicting interests. The official security documentation puts it plainly: “OpenClaw is not a hostile multi-tenant security boundary for mutually adversarial users sharing one agent or gateway.”

That distinction matters because an agent can use the tools and accounts it has been granted on behalf of someone who can message it. As the trust model explains, “This is permission to ask a privileged agent to act, not a guarantee that it will refuse to disclose data or execute an untrusted request.” The practical risk is often ordinary misuse rather than a sophisticated exploit: “Most failures here are not exotic exploits – they are ‘someone messaged the bot and the bot did what they asked.’”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild your security plan around five questions: who can contact the agent, which tools it can invoke, where those tools run, what secrets or data it can reach, and who else shares the Gateway.

OpenClaw security risks: map the exposed surfaces
- Gateway access: A remotely reachable Gateway, weak or missing authentication, an exposed browser-control interface, or an incorrectly trusted proxy can give outsiders a path to the agent.
- Messages and group membership: A DM policy that accepts unknown senders, or a group with broad membership and no mention or sender restrictions, can let people steer the agent.
- Untrusted content: A web page, email, document, attachment, search result, or pasted log may contain instructions intended to redirect the agent or induce it to reveal information or act.
- Tools and execution: Tools such as
exec,browser,web_fetch,web_search,gateway, andcroncan expand the consequences of a bad instruction when enabled without a clear need. - Secrets and retained data: Credentials available to the agent, transcripts, and logs can expose accounts or sensitive information if the agent, host, or people with access to records are compromised.
- Extensions: A skill or plugin can add code and permissions to the deployment. Treat its author, source, version, and access as part of your trust decision.
OpenClaw best practices: secure access before adding capabilities
Keep the Gateway private or authenticated
For ordinary use, keep the Gateway bound to loopback when remote access is unnecessary. If remote access is needed, use an authenticated private route, such as a tailnet or SSH tunnel, or configure token/password authentication and a trusted proxy correctly. Check the bind address, firewall rules, container or host port publishing, authentication, and proxy trust together; a secure setting in one layer does not compensate for an unintended public route in another.
Do not expose the Gateway or browser control broadly to the internet just to make the agent reachable. The security and access-control FAQ identifies unauthenticated public binds and exposed browser control as findings to address promptly.
Decide who may message the agent
Use pairing or an explicit allowlist for direct messages rather than accepting messages from any sender. In groups, restrict access to selected rooms and use mention gating or sender allowlists where membership is broad. Channel defaults can differ, so check the configuration for each channel instead of assuming that an access rule applies uniformly. Use the documented doctor and audit checks to surface policy issues.

Grant only the tools the agent needs
Start with the minimum tool profile that supports the task. Narrow high-risk capabilities to trusted agents or explicit allowlists, especially exec, browser, web_fetch, web_search, gateway, and cron. If interpreters are allowlisted for execution, the prompt-injection guidance calls out tools.exec.strictInlineEval so inline evaluation forms still require approval.
For consequential actions, make human review part of the operating procedure. Do not assume that a manual approval step is enabled by default: confirm the controls supported by the OpenClaw version you have installed and test how they behave before relying on them.
Assume content the agent reads may be hostile
Prompt injection is an instruction embedded in content the agent processes; it does not require a stranger to message a public bot directly. Treat links, attachments, email, documents, browser pages, search and fetch results, and pasted logs as untrusted input. A capable model may follow instructions in that content, so keep hard permission boundaries in place even when using a stronger model.

OpenClaw’s prompt-injection documentation reports results from 272,000 attacks across 41 agent scenarios. In that evaluation, an attack counted as successful only if the agent both performed the harmful action and concealed it from the user; the reported rates were 0.5% for Claude Opus 4.5, 1.0% for Sonnet 4.5, 1.3% for Haiku 4.5, and 8.5% for Gemini 2.5 Pro. These are results for that evaluation and scoring rule, not a general probability that an OpenClaw deployment will be compromised. The same documentation notes published success rates above 80% for adaptive human attackers against state-of-the-art defenses, underscoring why model choice cannot replace access controls.
Do not assume execution is sandboxed
Sandboxing is opt-in. When sandbox mode is off, implicit host=auto resolves to the Gateway host, so execution may reach the host rather than an isolated runtime. An explicit host=sandbox fails closed if no sandbox runtime is available. Verify the effective configuration and runtime instead of inferring isolation from a tool setting or from the fact that OpenClaw is self-hosted.
Keep secrets and accounts out of unnecessary reach
Use dedicated accounts and credentials for the agent where practical, so access can be revoked without disrupting a personal account. Do not put secrets in prompts, and do not let an agent processing untrusted content read credentials it does not need. Decide what conversations and tool activity are retained in transcripts or logs, and limit who can read those records.

Review skills and plugins as code
Choose third-party skills and plugins deliberately: prefer known authors and pinned versions, inspect the code, keep allowlists narrow, and avoid granting broad filesystem, browser, execution, or secret access. A scan result is not a complete security boundary. OpenClaw’s FAQ says it does not perform built-in local dangerous-code blocking during plugin or skill installation or update, so installation should not be treated as proof that an extension is safe.
When one Gateway is not an appropriate boundary
If users have conflicting interests, do not rely on session visibility settings or agent-to-agent restrictions as substitutes for isolation. They may help separate personas, but people sharing a tool-enabled agent can steer it within its granted permissions. Use separate Gateways, credentials, and, where practical, separate OS users or hosts for mutually adversarial users. This separates both the messaging path and the resources the agent can reach.

- Restrict Gateway reachability. Confirm it binds to loopback if remote access is unnecessary. If remote access is required, verify the private route or authentication, firewall, published ports, and proxy trust.
- Limit senders and rooms. Enable pairing or a DM allowlist; restrict groups and apply mention gating or sender allowlists where appropriate.
- Reduce tool permissions. Remove capabilities the agent does not need. Restrict execution, browser, web, Gateway, and scheduling tools to trusted agents or explicit allowlists.
- Check execution isolation. Verify whether sandbox mode is actually enabled, where execution runs, and whether the configured sandbox runtime is available.
- Protect credentials and records. Use dedicated accounts where practical, keep secrets out of prompts, limit filesystem access, and review transcript and log access.
- Inspect extensions. Review skill or plugin code, author, version, and requested access before installing or updating it.
- Separate trust groups. If users are mutually adversarial, move them to separate Gateways and credentials; use separate OS identities or hosts where practical.
- Run the audit. After configuration or network changes, run
openclaw security audit --deepand address findings about exposed access, tool scope, and sandbox gaps.
What to do if you suspect a compromise
Contain the affected access path first, then treat any secrets the agent or attacker could have reached as potentially exposed. Revoke or rotate the affected credentials, review the Gateway configuration and audit findings, and preserve relevant logs or other evidence before making changes that would erase them. The right scope depends on which account, tool, host, or access path was exposed; do not assume rotating one token is enough if the agent could reach other credentials.
As a dated status snapshot, OpenClaw’s security page said on September 9, 2026, that there were no active security bulletins and no known compromise of its infrastructure or official install/update channels. That statement explicitly excluded third-party ClawHub skills and is not a guarantee about later events or an individual deployment. The same page, reviewed October 7, 2026, stated that OpenClaw had no paid bounty program.
