Disconnecting a site from MetaMask does not revoke token approvals you previously granted it. Review connected sites and on-chain approvals separately: a connection controls what a dapp can access through your wallet, while an approval can continue authorizing a contract to move a particular token until you revoke it.
What to check—and what each permission controls
MetaMask’s permissions view lets you review connected dapps and adjust which accounts and networks each one can access. Token approvals are separate, on-chain permissions; security alerts are risk signals, not a guarantee that a site or transaction is safe.

| Item | What it controls | How to change or remove it | How long it can persist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dapp connection | Connection between the site and wallet, including access to connected account information and requests through that connection. | Disconnect the dapp in MetaMask. | Until disconnected; this does not remove token approvals. |
| Account and network access | Which connected accounts and enabled networks a dapp can use. | Edit the dapp’s permissions in MetaMask. | Until you change the permissions or disconnect. |
| Token approval | Whether a dapp or contract may access and move a specific token type; some approvals can be unlimited. | Review approvals separately and submit a revocation for approvals you no longer want. | An on-chain approval can remain until revoked. |
| Advanced permission | For supported dapps, access with limits or conditions such as token amount, frequency, or expiration. | Revoke it, or let a configured expiration take effect. | May end at its set expiration; availability depends on dapp support. |
Review connected dapps and account or network access
In MetaMask Extension, open the menu in the top-right corner and choose All Permissions to see connected dapps. The disconnect guide may label this area Dapp connections; if the wording differs in your version, look for the permissions or connections control. For a particular dapp, review its enabled accounts and networks and remove access you do not need. MetaMask notes that a connected dapp may suggest transactions for connected accounts. If multiple networks are enabled, it may switch among them without requiring you to switch manually each time.
Extension
- Open MetaMask and select the top-right menu.
- Choose All Permissions (or the similarly named connections control) to inspect connected dapps.
- Select a dapp and review its connected accounts and enabled networks. Edit the access if you no longer want the dapp to use an account or network.
- Disconnect dapps you no longer use or recognize.
Mobile
MetaMask’s documented Mobile disconnect flow differs from Extension: open Explore, visit the dapp, tap its account icon, then choose Disconnect all. Menu labels can change, so look for the dapp’s account or connection controls in your current app.

Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke token approvals
MetaMask describes a token approval as “permission for a dapp to access and move a specific type of token from your wallet” in its token approval explainer. Disconnecting removes the dapp connection and can prevent it from viewing your address or wallet contents or initiating transactions through that connection. But a previously granted on-chain approval can remain: disconnecting alone does not stop an approved contract from using its allowance.
Review existing approvals separately in MetaMask Portfolio, then revoke approvals you do not recognize or no longer need. Revocation is an on-chain action, not simply a change to the wallet’s connection list. Do not assume that removing a site from connected dapps has also removed its token spending permission.

Use security alerts as signals, not a safety guarantee
MetaMask says security alerts are enabled by default in Extension and Mobile. Its documented controls are under Settings > Privacy in Extension and Settings > Security & Privacy on Mobile. For users onboarded with a Secret Recovery Phrase, Basic Functionality controls the feature; MetaMask says users onboarded through Google, Apple, or Telegram always have it on. Confirm the current setting and available controls in your own app, since labels and eligibility may change.
MetaMask describes Warning and Malicious classifications as informational. A missing Verified badge does not by itself show that a site or token is unsafe, and verification is not an endorsement or guarantee. If MetaMask classifies a site as malicious, its guidance is not to connect or sign and to close the site. Alerts can miss threats, and MetaMask does not prevent you from proceeding.

Know what security checks share
MetaMask says its security checks and transaction simulations send the dapp URL, JSON-RPC request method, chain ID, and transaction data to MetaMask or security providers. It says providers do not receive your Secret Recovery Phrase, private keys, or other credentials. MetaMask names Blockaid among its partners and also describes other threat-detection providers; that does not mean one provider performs every check. Consider this data sharing when deciding whether to use the alerts, and review MetaMask’s explanation of its browser permission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Advanced permissions are different from ordinary token approvals
MetaMask’s advanced permissions guide describes ERC-7715 permissions that can limit access by token amount, frequency, or expiration. They are still new, depend on smart-account functionality, and appear only in some dapps; they are not the default model for ordinary token approvals. If a dapp offers one, read its scope and conditions before approving it. You can revoke an advanced permission or allow its configured expiration to end it.

A practical wallet hygiene routine
- Remove connections for dapps you no longer use or cannot identify.
- For retained connections, limit enabled accounts and networks to what the dapp needs.
- Review token approvals in MetaMask Portfolio independently of your connection list; revoke unrecognized or unnecessary approvals.
- Pay attention to security warnings, but do not treat a clean result or Verified badge as proof that a transaction is safe.
- If you use a compatible hardware wallet with MetaMask, treat it as an additional security measure—not a replacement for reviewing connections and approvals.
