Choose a passive left-and-right stereo pair, but verify the speakers’ impedance against the minimum allowed by the exact Yamaha R200A owner’s manual before buying. Yamaha rates the receiver at 100 W + 100 W under a specified 8-ohm test condition; that rating does not establish the receiver’s minimum compatible impedance.
What the Yamaha R200A supports
Yamaha describes the R200A as a two-channel stereo receiver with Speaker A/B selection. For standard stereo listening, compare conventional passive left-and-right speakers. The receiver also has a dedicated subwoofer output for listeners who want additional low-frequency output; a subwoofer supplements rather than replaces the main pair.

Yamaha says A/B selection can power up to four speakers in one room or provide music in two separate spaces. The product information does not state the impedance rules for using A and B simultaneously, so consult the exact receiver manual before planning a four-speaker setup.

Yamaha’s published rated output is 100 W + 100 W at 8 ohms, from 40 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.2% THD, according to the current R200A specifications accessed in 2026. This is a rated-output condition, not a minimum-speaker-impedance specification. Do not infer from it alone that the receiver requires 8-ohm speakers or can safely drive a lower nominal impedance.
#1 Best Overall
- Power behind every detail - Designed to bring out the best in your speakers, this receiver delivers 100W x 2ch (8Ω) of clean, dynamic power for a rich, accurate listening experience.
- More ways to play - Versatile connection options let you effortlessly enjoy music from vinyl, radio, CDs, or Bluetooth, all from one receiver.
- Expandable home audio - Take your sound further with a dedicated subwoofer output, making it easy to get deeper, more powerful bass whenever you’re ready.
- Set, save, and listen - Enjoy quick access to 40 preset AM/FM radio stations, making your favorite music, news, and talk shows just a tap away.
- Stream seamlessly - Easily switch between two streaming audio sources with Bluetooth Multipoint, allowing you to pair and stay connected to two devices at once.
- Find the exact model number on the receiver and locate its matching regional owner’s manual. Do not assume a manual for a similarly named Yamaha receiver applies.
- Check the manual and rear-panel labeling for the minimum permitted speaker impedance.
- Compare that requirement with the nominal impedance listed for each speaker you are considering.
- If you plan to use Speaker A and B together, follow the manual’s separate instructions for that configuration before purchasing or connecting four speakers.
If the manual confirms compatibility, passive 8-ohm speakers are a straightforward place to begin comparing models. Yamaha’s dynamic-power figures—125, 150, 165 and 180 W per channel at 8, 6, 4 and 2 ohms, respectively—are dynamic ratings, not continuous rated output and not a declaration of the minimum recommended speaker load.
Compare sensitivity, room fit and sound
Sensitivity and listening level
Consider speaker sensitivity alongside impedance, particularly if the room is large, the listening position is far from the speakers, or you expect to listen at higher levels. The receiver’s power rating by itself cannot guarantee a particular loudness: room acoustics, listening distance, speaker sensitivity and the level you choose all affect the result. Power-handling numbers alone also do not ensure a safe match.

Size and placement
Bookshelf speakers can work well on suitable shelves or stands where floor space is limited. Floorstanding speakers need more room and may be worth comparing when larger cabinets fit the space. These are general placement considerations, not Yamaha-tested pairings for the R200A.

Plan A/B speakers and optional bass extension
For speakers in two spaces or four speakers in one room, first confirm the R200A manual’s loading rules for the intended A/B arrangement. Yamaha confirms A/B selection and support for up to four speakers, but its cited product information does not give the impedance conditions for simultaneous operation.
If you want more bass extension, consider a powered subwoofer and check its connection and setup instructions. Yamaha lists a dedicated subwoofer output on the R200A; adding a sub does not remove the need to select a compatible main stereo pair.

Confirm the exact R200A model
Yamaha USA styles the current product name as “R200A.” A retailer’s “YAMAHA R-200A (B)” listing does not establish that it is identical to the current Yamaha USA model. Verify the model printed on your receiver and use the corresponding regional manual rather than relying on a similar model name.
