Secure an automated static-site deployment by protecting every step between a repository change and a live production release: control who can change workflow code, limit job permissions and credentials, gate production publishing, and set access rules for previews. Static describes the site’s delivered files; it does not make the build pipeline, dependencies, tokens, or preview environments harmless.
Map the deployment chain before changing settings
Trace how a change becomes a published site, then identify who can authorize each transition. A typical path includes repository changes, a CI runner, third-party actions and dependencies, a build command, generated files, hosting credentials, preview deployments, production, and DNS or domain configuration.

- Identify untrusted input: Consider who can open a pull request, change a branch, edit a workflow, or influence build inputs.
- Find credential access: Record which jobs can read secrets and which credentials they actually need.
- Identify the production path: Establish exactly which branch, tag, or workflow can publish the live site and who can approve it.
- Check what the site exposes: Generated files are often public. Client-side code, third-party services, and any functions associated with the site can add risks beyond the deployment process.
This map helps distinguish the public production site from less-public build and review environments—and reveals when a seemingly routine workflow change can affect production.

Protect repository changes and workflow execution
Require appropriate review
Use repository rules to restrict changes to production source and workflow files. For important sites, require review before changes can reach the production branch. A workflow is privileged code: changing its triggers, permissions, or deployment steps can change who can publish and what credentials a run can access.

Give each job only the permissions it needs
Set workflow and job permissions deliberately rather than relying on broad defaults. A job that builds files may not need the same access as a job that publishes a deployment. Review permissions alongside triggers and the data supplied by pull requests, especially when a workflow can write to the repository or access secrets. GitHub’s guidance on secure use of GitHub Actions covers broader hardening considerations.
Review actions and workflow dependencies
Third-party actions and build dependencies are part of the chain you trust. Use actions you trust, and review changes to workflow dependencies and build inputs. A protected source branch does not remove the need to consider what code the runner executes.

Gate production publishing
GitHub Actions: use a production environment
In GitHub, configure a production environment and use its protection rules to restrict deployments to intended branches or tags and, where appropriate, require approval. Jobs must reference the environment to use its secrets; GitHub documents that environment secrets are available only to workflow jobs that reference that environment. When reviewers are required, the job cannot access those secrets until approval.
Recommended Free Tools
Availability of environment protection controls depends on repository visibility and GitHub plan. Check the options available for the specific repository rather than assuming every account has the same gates. See GitHub’s deployments and environments documentation.

Netlify: require Git-based production deploys
Netlify documents an Enforce Git-based deployments setting that requires production deploys to come through Git pushes to the configured production branch. Other deploy contexts can be deployed separately. This can make the production route more explicit, but you should still protect the branch and review who can change the workflow or configuration. See Netlify’s Git workflows overview.
Store credentials safely and keep them out of output
Use managed secrets with narrow access
Store sensitive credentials in the CI or hosting provider’s secret manager, scope them as narrowly as possible, and give access only to jobs that need them. Avoid putting credentials in committed files, build logs, or generated public assets. A secret used to publish should not automatically be available to every job that runs a build or checks a pull request.

- FIDO2 Certified Passkey Authentication: Officially FIDO2 certified for secure, passwordless login on supported platforms. Use modern passkeys with hardware-backed protection. Please verify your intended service supports FIDO2 hardware keys before purchase.
- Precision Fingerprint Sensor: Built-in high-accuracy biometric fingerprint sensor ensures fast, convenient authentication while preventing unauthorized access. No PIN reuse, no shared secrets—only your fingerprint unlocks the key.
- Strong Hardware 2FA/MFA Security: Enhances account protection with physical-presence and biometric verification, helping defend against phishing, credential theft, and account takeovers.
- USB-C Wired Compatibility (No NFC): Designed for stable USB-C authentication on desktops and laptops, including Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. Ideal for users and enterprises that prefer wired-only security keys.
- Durable Aluminum Shield, Portable Design: Features the same precision aluminum protective shield for long-term durability. Compact, lightweight, battery-free, and network-free-built for everyday carry and professional environments.
Cloudflare’s CI-driven Direct Upload example uses repository secrets for an account ID and API token, with example permissions of contents: read and deployments: write. Treat these as example values to assess against your own workflow—not permissions or credentials to copy without review.

Netlify’s security checklist recommends managing sensitive environment values through its controls and using scopes. Its secret-scanning documentation describes detecting potential secret exposure and failing a build. Scanning can catch some mistakes, but it does not replace limiting which jobs can access a secret or keeping sensitive values out of source, logs, and public output. See Netlify’s security checklist and secret scanning documentation.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Set access rules for previews and branch deployments
Preview deployments make review easier, but they can expose drafts or internal information even when the production site is meant to be public. Decide who should see each preview and whether its build uses production data or secrets.
- Netlify: Its security checklist recommends team-login protection for non-production previews.
- Cloudflare Pages: Git integration supports previews for custom branches and pull requests. The existence of preview URLs does not establish that access is restricted; verify the access policy for your project.
Keep preview credentials and data separate from production where feasible. Apply controls based on what a preview contains, not just on whether it has a different URL.
Choose a deployment model with its security trade-offs in mind
Git-integrated builds and external CI with direct upload can both support automated publishing. The important differences are how you control the production ref and approvals, create and scope credentials, protect preview URLs, and audit who can publish. Check which controls are available for your account, plan, repository visibility, and workflow design; product documentation describes features, not a universal security ranking.
