How to Secure Android Devices with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint in Intune

A current implementation guide for deploying Microsoft Defender: Antivirus through Intune, configuring Android permissions, evaluating device risk, and enforcing access safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint can protect Android Enterprise devices, but installing the app is only the first step. A complete control chain connects Android Enterprise, Intune, Defender threat signals, compliance or app-protection policies, and Microsoft Entra Conditional Access. When configured correctly, a detected risk can make a device noncompliant and restrict access to protected resources.

How the integration works

Each service has a distinct role:

Component Responsibility
Android Enterprise Separates work and personal data or manages the entire corporate device.
Microsoft Intune Handles enrollment, app deployment, configuration, compliance, and app-protection policies.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Provides mobile threat detection, web and network protection, risk assessment, and alerts.
Microsoft Entra ID Enforces identity-based access decisions through Conditional Access.
Microsoft Defender XDR Provides investigation, incident correlation, and remediation workflows.

Defender sends a device-risk or threat-level signal to Intune. Intune can use that signal for device compliance or app-protection decisions, and Entra Conditional Access can then allow or block access. Installing Defender alone does not create automatic access enforcement.

Supported Android scenarios

Personally owned work profile

This is the usual BYOD design. Defender and Intune protect the work context while Android keeps personal data separated. Device-wide controls and automatically granted permissions can be more limited than on corporate-owned devices.

#1 Best Overall
SUPFINE Magnetic for iPhone 13 Case/iPhone 14 Case Black
  • Super Magnetic Attraction: Powerful built-in magnets, easier place-and-go wireless charging and compatible with MagSafe
  • Compatibility: Only compatible with iPhone 13/14; precise cutouts for easy access to all ports, buttons, sensors and cameras, soft and sensitive buttons with good response, are easy to press
  • Matte Translucent Back: Features a flexible TPU frame and a matte coating on the hard PC back to provide you with a premium touch and excellent grip, while the entire matte back coating perfectly blocks smudges, fingerprints and even scratches
  • Shock Protection: Passing military drop tests up to 10 feet, your device is effectively protected from violent impacts and drops
  • Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you

Corporate-owned work profile

The organization owns the device but provides a separated personal area. It offers stronger governance than BYOD without managing every personal activity as a fully managed deployment.

Corporate-owned fully managed

The organization controls the entire device. This generally enables the strongest policy and permission control, but it is inappropriate for personal devices and carries greater privacy and administrative overhead.

Dedicated devices

Kiosks, shared devices, and frontline devices require scenario-specific validation. Confirm that the Defender features and permission behavior support the selected dedicated-device configuration before broad deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unenrolled devices

Microsoft also documents Defender with Intune mobile application management for unmanaged Android devices or devices managed by another UEM. In this model, app-protection and Defender risk signals matter more than full device compliance; MAM does not provide the same inventory, hardening, or remediation controls as MDM.

Android device administrator is deprecated and is not available for devices with Google Mobile Services. Treat it as a legacy exception and use Android Enterprise for modern deployments. See the Android platform guide.

Prerequisites

  • An Intune license and a Microsoft Defender for Endpoint license for each applicable user. Entitlements can also come through a qualifying Microsoft security suite.
  • An Android Enterprise enrollment design and an Intune connection to Managed Google Play.
  • An enabled Intune–Defender service-to-service connection.
  • Supported Android devices and Google Mobile Services where required; check Microsoft’s current minimum requirements rather than relying on old Android-version claims.
  • Administrative permissions for Mobile Threat Defense, Endpoint Detection and Response, compliance policies, and Conditional Access. Endpoint Security Manager may cover much of the Intune work; Conditional Access requires an appropriate Entra role.
  • Pilot users, pilot devices, and an emergency-access account excluded from Conditional Access.

Connect Intune and Defender

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
  2. Open the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint integration or connector area; the exact menu label may vary.
  3. Authorize and enable the service-to-service connection.
  4. Confirm that the connection reports as enabled.
  5. Enable Defender evaluation for device compliance and, where applicable, app-protection policies.
  6. Verify that onboarding status and risk signals are available before deploying the app.

Deploy Microsoft Defender from Managed Google Play

  1. Connect the Intune tenant to Managed Google Play.
  2. In Intune, add a Managed Google Play application and search for Microsoft Defender: Antivirus.
  3. Approve the app. Choose how new permission requests should be handled by the organization.
  4. Synchronize Managed Google Play with Intune.
  5. Assign the app as Required to a pilot user or device group.
  6. Open the Android apps page, select Defender, and verify installation and device status.

Use separate pilot assignments for personally owned work profiles, corporate-owned work profiles, fully managed devices, and shared or dedicated devices. Validate installation, sign-in, permissions, onboarding, protection, signal propagation, and Conditional Access before expanding the assignment.

Configure the Defender app

The current managed-device path is Apps → Managed apps → Configuration → Create → Managed devices. Select Android Enterprise, match the enrollment-profile type, target Microsoft Defender: Antivirus, configure the required settings, and assign the policy to the same pilot population as the app.

Permissions

  • Fine location: Microsoft recommends it for web protection and network protection, including Wi-Fi threat detection. Explain the privacy impact before requesting it.
  • Notifications: Needed for user-facing threat alerts. Denying them weakens the response experience even if other protection continues.
  • VPN consent: Web and network protection can use a local VPN mechanism for inspection. This is different from Microsoft Tunnel, which provides access to private organizational resources.

Android 12 and later restrict automatic permission grants in some corporate-owned work-profile and dedicated-device scenarios. A user prompt may therefore be expected rather than evidence of a failed Intune policy.

Low-touch onboarding

Low-touch onboarding can prepopulate the user identity and reduce credential entry when Defender is first opened. It is disabled by default and is not fully silent onboarding: authentication, consent, licensing, setup, or permission prompts may remain. Test it with the organization’s enrollment and authentication design.

Configure web and network protection

  1. Create the required Android Enterprise device configuration profile.
  2. Configure Defender always-on VPN or web-protection settings supported by the enrollment type.
  3. Configure network protection and privacy settings as appropriate.
  4. Test browsing, Wi-Fi threat detection, VPN ownership, and user prompts.

Check for conflicts with another VPN, per-app VPN rules, work-profile restrictions, battery optimization, and OEM-specific behavior. Defender’s local VPN inspection should not be described as a corporate network tunnel, and coverage can differ between work and personal traffic.

Create risk-based compliance

Create an Android Enterprise compliance policy and select the Microsoft Defender threat-level condition. Choose the threshold deliberately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Threat level Example result
Secured or low Compliant
Medium Compliant in a lower-friction baseline, or noncompliant in a stronger posture
High Normally noncompliant

Baseline policy

  • Mark high-risk devices noncompliant.
  • Notify users and use a pilot group.
  • Add remediation actions and a documented exception process.

Stronger enterprise policy

  • Mark medium and high risk noncompliant.
  • Require Defender onboarding, a supported Android version, secure lock, encryption where supported, and a non-rooted device.
  • Combine the policy with Conditional Access.

The correct threshold depends on data sensitivity, false-positive tolerance, and response capacity. A medium threshold described in older HTMD coverage is an example, not a universal recommendation. Do not promise instant blocking: detection, network transmission, Intune check-in, compliance processing, and token refresh can each add delay.

Protect unenrolled devices with app protection

For BYOD or another-UEM scenarios, create an Intune app-protection policy for supported applications and use Defender risk signals as a condition. This can protect corporate data inside managed apps without enrolling the whole device. It cannot provide the full device inventory, configuration enforcement, or remediation available through MDM.

Enforce the result with Conditional Access

  1. Create a Microsoft Entra Conditional Access policy requiring a compliant device for enrolled-device access, or requiring app protection for MAM scenarios.
  2. Start in Report-only mode.
  3. Exclude emergency-access accounts and target a pilot group.
  4. Review sign-in logs and Conditional Access insights.
  5. Confirm that compliant devices succeed and risky or noncompliant devices are denied as intended.
  6. Move the policy to On and expand assignments gradually.

Require device to be marked as compliant, Require app protection policy, Require approved client app, Block access, and session controls are different controls. Microsoft’s Zero Trust guidance warns that administrators can lock themselves out if they enforce compliance before verifying their own device and recovery path.

Validate the deployment

  • Installation: Defender installs from Managed Google Play in the intended profile.
  • Onboarding: The user can authenticate, complete setup, grant permissions, and appear onboarded in Defender.
  • Signals: Intune displays a current Defender risk level and evaluates compliance.
  • Protection: Use a currently validated Microsoft test procedure for malicious URLs; do not reuse an unverified historical test link. Confirm alerts, notifications, and Defender-portal events.
  • Access: Compliant devices access protected resources, while noncompliant devices are handled by the intended Conditional Access policy.
  • Recovery: Emergency-access accounts remain usable and existing sessions and token refresh behavior are understood.

App appears in the wrong profile

Review whether the assignment targets users or devices, confirm the enrollment-profile type, and verify that the app was assigned to the work profile rather than the personal profile.

Onboarded device remains noncompliant

Confirm policy assignment, Defender evaluation, threshold, recent device check-in, reported risk, matching Android Enterprise profile, and unrelated compliance failures.

Conditional Access blocks a legitimate user

  1. Inspect the Entra sign-in log and identify the blocking policy.
  2. Review Intune compliance and Defender alerts.
  3. Remediate the detected issue and allow states to refresh.
  4. Use the documented emergency-access process if an administrator is locked out.

Location permission cannot be granted automatically

This can be an Android or enrollment-type limitation. Prompt the user and explain that location may be needed for complete web, network, or Wi-Fi threat coverage.

VPN configuration fails

Check existing VPNs, always-on ownership, per-app assignments, work-profile restrictions, battery optimization, OEM behavior, and whether the selected Defender feature requires VPN-based scanning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and licensing considerations

Work profiles separate business and personal data, but location, notifications, and local VPN inspection require clear user communication. Explain what the organization can see, whether personal applications are scanned, how personal browsing is handled, and how visibility changes on fully managed devices. Use Microsoft’s Android and iOS privacy guidance.

Intune and Defender are separate licensing requirements unless included in a qualifying agreement. Review the Intune product page, Defender for Endpoint page, and current Microsoft security pricing. Public suite pricing is not a standalone Android entitlement; verify geography, product terms, agreement type, and user eligibility before purchasing.

Organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365, Intune, Entra, and Defender XDR usually benefit from Microsoft-native integration. Lookout and Zimperium are specialist alternatives; compare their technical coverage, UEM integration, operations, and quote-based pricing through their Lookout Marketplace listing and Zimperium Marketplace listing.

Deployment checklist

  • Licenses and administrative roles confirmed.
  • Managed Google Play and Intune–Defender connections enabled.
  • Android Enterprise enrollment type selected for each population.
