The “streaming success” claim is defensible—but only in the careful sense that the movie remains highly discoverable and repeatedly revisited, not that a platform has published blockbuster viewing totals.
In the United States, JustWatch listed it on Hulu, Philo and the AMC+ Amazon Channel when checked on July 31, 2026. The same listing showed the film at No. 163 on its daily chart and reported 546 days in its Top 100. Those are useful signs of continuing interest, not audited minutes watched or subscriber figures.
Why the headline says “38 years later”
The Princess Bride opened in the United States on October 9, 1987. The 38-year wording fits a March 9, 2026 publication date; by late summer 2026, the theatrical release was approaching its 39th anniversary. Release information is listed by The Numbers.
Directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman from his novel, the approximately 99-minute film combines fairy-tale romance, swordplay, revenge, broad comedy and adventure. Its principal cast includes Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal and Peter Falk.

What the story actually is
A grandfather reads to his sick grandson. Within that frame, Buttercup is being forced toward marriage with Prince Humperdinck when Westley—her presumed-dead true love—returns as the masked Dread Pirate Roberts.
The setup becomes a rescue quest, revenge story and comic swashbuckler at once. The grandfather’s interruptions and the boy’s objections make the framing device more than a framing trick: the movie feels like a story being handed from one generation to another. JustWatch and Rotten Tomatoes describe the same central blend of romance, danger and comedy.
It was not an instant box-office phenomenon
The film began with a relatively modest theatrical run. The Numbers reports approximately $5.1 million in domestic box office, although databases can differ in scope and accounting.
Its larger cultural life came through home video, television, repeated quotations and family rewatching. The Associated Press describes Reiner’s films as gaining “many more lives” through home video. Streaming is the newest delivery system for that established afterlife, not a rescue of an unknown movie.
Why the film is so difficult to remake
The tone is unusually exact
The Princess Bride treats its romance sincerely while making room for parody, slapstick, danger and deliberately artificial fairy-tale stakes. A remake could become too glossy, too self-conscious or too cynical and lose the balance that lets the jokes and emotional moments support each other.
The performances are inseparable from the characters
André the Giant’s Fezzik, Wallace Shawn’s Vizzini, Mandy Patinkin’s Inigo Montoya and Billy Crystal’s Miracle Max are not interchangeable pieces of a generic fantasy ensemble. The chemistry among the performers is part of the film’s identity.
Goldman’s dialogue became cultural shorthand
Lines such as Inigo’s revenge declaration and the film’s verbal duels are quoted outside the movie. Recasting those moments would invite direct comparison rather than giving a new production room to establish its own voice.
The handmade storybook texture matters
The practical-looking sets, physical swordplay and compact running time give the film a tactile quality. Its grandfather-and-grandson structure also makes it feel personal and inherited, rather than like a franchise installment designed for endless continuation.

“No one should ever remake it” is sentiment, not a statistic
Fans and cast members have repeatedly expressed resistance to replacing the original, but there is no authoritative survey proving a universal consensus. Chris Sarandon, who played Humperdinck, questioned the need to remake The Princess Bride or The Nightmare Before Christmas, calling both unusually specific works in comments reported by ComicBook.com.
No conventional studio remake was identified in the cited sources. There is one important technical distinction: Home Movie: The Princess Bride, a 2020 charity project assembled remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, recreated scenes with actors recording from home. It was not a theatrical reboot or standard studio remake; see the Wikipedia overview.
The objection is usually to replacing Reiner’s finished film, not necessarily to every stage adaptation, charity recreation or future interpretation of Goldman’s material.
What “streaming success” can honestly mean
JustWatch’s July 31, 2026 listing provides indirect evidence of demand:

| Signal | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| No. 163 on the U.S. daily chart | User activity around the title at the time of the check | Total minutes watched, completion rate or subscriber count |
| 546 days in JustWatch’s Top 100 | Long-running discoverability and repeat interest on that service | A platform-wide or industry-wide audience ranking |
JustWatch’s charts reflect actions such as clicks on streaming offers, watchlist additions and titles marked as seen. They are not audited viewing measurements. The evidence therefore supports calling The Princess Bride a frequently rediscovered streaming title, not claiming that it is one of the most-watched movies on every service.
Why streaming helps its cross-generational life
- A child can find the film without having inherited a VHS tape or waiting for a television rerun.
- Parents can pair it with newer family movies and introduce it on demand.
- Its 99-minute length and quotable scenes make repeat viewing easy.
- Its mixed genre fits searches for romance, fantasy, comedy, adventure and family viewing.
- Streaming removes the friction once created by rental shops, broadcast schedules and physical media.
Those conditions make first-time discovery by younger viewers plausible, while the available chart does not identify viewer ages or separate nostalgic rewatches from new viewers.

Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film at 93% from critics and 94% from audiences, with more than 250,000 audience ratings shown on the page. Those percentages belong to Rotten Tomatoes’ database and can change as it updates.
The safer historical description is an enduring favorite whose reputation strengthened through repeat viewing and cultural circulation, rather than a movie that was universally celebrated or an instant blockbuster on release.

Where to watch in the United States
JustWatch’s July 31, 2026 U.S. snapshot listed these options. Rights, plans and prices can change by date, state and device, so verify the listing before subscribing or purchasing.
| Option | Access shown in the snapshot | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hulu | Included with a listed Hulu subscription | Viewers who already use Hulu or want its wider catalog |
| Philo | Listed as available until September 1, 2026 in one listing | Subscribers who also want Philo’s live-TV bundle |
| AMC+ Amazon Channel | Available through the partner channel listing | People interested in AMC’s broader catalog; channel terms may differ from direct AMC+ |
| Amazon Video | Digital purchase listed at $14.99 in the July 31 snapshot | A one-time viewing without adding a monthly subscription |
| Apple TV Store | Digital rental or purchase destination listed | Apple-device users who want store integration |
| Fandango at Home | Digital purchase destination listed | Viewers already building a library there |
Official service pages are Hulu, Philo, AMC+, Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. A subscription can be poor value if the only goal is one 99-minute film; compare its current digital price with the cost of a new monthly plan.
The real reason it keeps returning
Streaming did not make The Princess Bride relevant. It made an already durable favorite easier to locate, replay and pass along. Its precise tonal balance, distinctive cast, memorable language and story-within-a-story structure explain why viewers resist replacing it—and why a 1987 film can continue to find new audiences without needing to become a modern franchise.
