A hardware wallet can add protection for key custody and transaction review, but it cannot make a malicious approval safe after you sign it.
Protect your recovery phrase first
Your secret recovery phrase can restore a self-custody wallet and give control of its assets. Keep it private and offline. Never type it into a website, email, direct message, or support chat, and do not store a photo or cloud copy. OpenSea says it will never ask for the phrase; MetaMask describes its use as limited to initial setup confirmation, restoring a wallet, or resetting a password. See OpenSea’s safety guidance and MetaMask’s guidance on identifying the real wallet.

If you believe the phrase was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase and move the assets to it using the wallet provider’s verified instructions. Revoking a marketplace approval is not enough: someone with the phrase may have broad control of the wallet.

Install wallet software only through the provider’s official website or official app-store listing. Do not use links in unsolicited messages to install a wallet or “verify” a phrase. OpenSea warns about email-driven transaction prompts and unsolicited social DMs; MetaMask says a genuine transaction popup is initiated by the user and that a prompt with little context is suspicious. These are warning signs, not proof that a polished or verified-looking site is safe.

Should you use a hardware wallet for NFTs?
A hardware wallet is a useful additional layer if you hold valuable assets or want signing to require a dedicated device. It can keep the signing key apart from an internet-connected computer and, on supported setups, display transaction details for review. It does not prevent phishing or block a malicious contract: if you approve a dangerous request, the device can still sign it.
Before confirming, review the spender address, asset, and permission scope on the device screen when available. A request that looks clear can still grant broad access. Choose a device and wallet interface based on whether they support the networks and NFT standards you use, show readable signing details, provide a recovery process you can follow if the device is lost or damaged, and fit your daily habits. The security value depends partly on using the device carefully.

For a lower-risk routine, some holders keep a separate wallet for everyday dApp interactions and reserve another wallet for assets they do not need to use frequently. This separates exposure, but it does not make either wallet immune to mistakes; protect each wallet’s recovery phrase and inspect every signing request. OpenSea’s safety guidance and Ledger’s ice-phishing explanation describe why device-based signing still requires careful review.
Understand what an NFT approval allows
An approval gives an app or smart contract permission to access or move an asset under specified conditions. Marketplaces may need approvals to list or transfer NFTs, so an approval is not automatically malicious. The important question is whether the spender and scope match the action you intend.
Token-specific approval
A token-specific permission applies to an individual NFT. It is narrower than granting an operator permission over an entire collection, though you should still verify the spender and reason for the request.

Collection-wide operator approval
A broad operator permission can let a contract act on multiple NFTs in a collection. If a site offers a narrower permission that suits the task, avoid granting broader rights than needed. ERC-721 and ERC-1155 approvals can enable marketplace listing or transfer activity, so inspect the scope before signing. OpenSea’s approval guide describes these permissions.
Off-chain signatures
Not every risky permission looks like a conventional transaction that immediately spends gas. Some signatures can authorize actions that may be used later. A request’s lack of an obvious gas fee does not establish that it is harmless. MetaMask discusses signature-based risks in its signature-phishing guidance.
Review a signing request before you approve it
Check the request’s context, origin, spender, asset, and scope. A fake mint, claim, or listing page can describe an action misleadingly, while the wallet request grants a permission with a different effect. If the wallet or signing device does not show enough detail to understand what you are authorizing, do not sign until you can verify the request through a trusted source.

Ledger’s ice-phishing guidance explains how deceptive approvals can put assets at risk, including when the user signs a request they misunderstand.

OpenSea’s Ethereum approval guide describes using Etherscan’s Token Approval tool to review ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 approvals and submit a revoke transaction. The tool is third-party, and revoking an approval requires a gas fee. Removing a marketplace’s NFT permission may mean you need to approve it again before using that marketplace. This Ethereum-specific checker should not be treated as a review of every chain or every signature type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Navigate to the approval tool through a verified route, rather than an unsolicited link.
- Check that the wallet and network are the intended Ethereum account and chain.
- Review the listed spender and permission before choosing what to revoke.
- Inspect the revoke transaction in your wallet or signing device and confirm only if its details match your intention.
OpenSea sets out the checker process and caveats in its Ethereum approval instructions. For another network or a different signature type, consult current official guidance for that chain and wallet.
What to do after signing a suspicious request
- Stop interacting with the site and do not sign further requests from it.
- From a clean, trusted device, review wallet activity and active approvals using official wallet guidance for the relevant chain.
- Revoke still-active approvals where possible, after checking the revocation transaction and its network.
- If your recovery phrase may have been disclosed, prioritize moving assets to a new wallet created from a new phrase; approval revocation cannot neutralize a stolen phrase.
Revoking a permission cannot recover NFTs or other assets that have already been transferred. Some permit-style signatures also have account-specific limits on revocation, as MetaMask notes in its signature-phishing guidance. Use current official wallet instructions for the affected chain and situation.
