How to Secure an LG Smart TV on Your Home Network

A practical, model-aware guide to securing an LG Smart TV: update webOS, harden your router, disable unused services, review LG privacy agreements and choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most effective way to secure an LG Smart TV is to protect the whole path to it: install current TV firmware, use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal with unique credentials, harden the router, disable features you do not need, and review LG’s privacy agreements and tracking controls. Menu names and available options vary by model, webOS version, and country, so identify your exact TV before following a path.

What “securing” an LG Smart TV actually covers

A smart TV is both a screen and an internet-connected computer. It communicates with streaming services, app providers, LG services, your router and, depending on your setup, phones, speakers, game consoles and other devices. Security therefore has several parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Software security: current firmware fixes known defects and keeps the TV’s operating system compatible with supported services.
  • Network security: strong Wi-Fi encryption and a hardened router reduce the chance that someone nearby or remotely can enter your home network.
  • Privacy: LG’s agreements and settings determine whether optional functions such as automatic content recognition (ACR), interest-based advertising, voice features and device discovery are active.
  • Exposure reduction: removing unused apps and disabling router features that you do not use limits unnecessary services.

No single change makes an LG TV invulnerable. A wired cable, MAC filtering, a VPN or a new router is not a universal requirement. The high-value controls are updates, encryption, unique passwords and a carefully configured router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Identify the TV model and webOS version first

LG uses different menus across model years and webOS releases. Before changing anything, record the model number and software version from the TV’s information or support screen, then open the model-specific manual and support page. This prevents applying an instruction meant for a different generation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Model identification also matters if you use router registration, access lists or troubleshooting. LG’s current guide explains how to locate a TV’s MAC address for different webOS generations: LG’s MAC-address instructions. A MAC address identifies a network interface; it is not a substitute for WPA2/WPA3 encryption or a strong Wi-Fi password.

2. Install the latest LG software

Enable automatic updates when your model offers the option, and check manually after connecting the TV to the internet. LG’s support instructions are the authority for the exact model and release:

For webOS 6.0 and later (2021 models and newer)

  1. Press the Settings button on the remote.
  2. Choose All Settings.
  3. Open Support.
  4. Select Software Update.
  5. Choose Check for Updates.
  6. Enable Auto Update if you want the TV to install future releases automatically.

LG documents this route in its support article, LG TV – How can I update the TV software (firmware)?. The labels can still differ by region or a specific model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For older webOS versions

Older software uses different menus. LG notes that webOS 4.5 and earlier may place the update control under General → About This TV. Do not assume that path is correct for every older set; use the model-specific instructions in LG’s “How to update an LG Smart TV” guide.

When the TV is offline: USB updating

LG also documents an offline USB method. Its June 12, 2026 guide calls for an empty USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of capacity and the software file for the exact TV model. Download firmware only from that model’s LG support page; firmware for a similar-looking television can be incompatible.

  1. Find the exact model on the TV label, purchase paperwork or information screen.
  2. Open the model’s LG support page and download the listed software package.
  3. Prepare an empty USB drive with at least 1 GB available.
  4. Follow LG’s folder and extraction instructions exactly; do not rename files unless LG instructs you to do so.
  5. Insert the USB drive into the TV and accept the update prompt, or use the USB update menu described for that model.
  6. Leave the TV powered on until the update finishes. Interrupting power during installation can leave the set unusable.

After updating, check the software-version screen again and test Wi-Fi, apps and HDMI devices. LG currently says eligible TV products receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version, subject to LG’s support policies and applicable requirements. That is a policy duration, not a guarantee that every model is eligible or that its precise end date is the same.

3. Harden the home router

The router protects every device on the network, including the TV. The Federal Trade Commission’s How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network guidance recommends the following controls. Router and internet-provider interfaces use different labels, so consult the router maker or ISP for the exact clicks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Router control What to do Why it matters
Wi-Fi encryption Choose WPA3 Personal when all important devices support it; otherwise choose WPA2 Personal. Encrypts traffic between devices and the access point. Avoid obsolete open, WEP or WPA modes.
Wi-Fi password Replace the default with a long, unique passphrase that is not reused elsewhere. Prevents guesses based on factory credentials or passwords exposed on another service.
Router administrator password Change the factory administrator username or password where the router permits it. Separates control of the router from access to Wi-Fi itself.
Router software Install current firmware and enable automatic updates if offered. Addresses router vulnerabilities that a TV update cannot fix.
Firewall Keep the router’s built-in firewall enabled. Helps block unsolicited inbound connections from the internet.
Remote management Turn it off unless you have a specific, understood reason to manage the router from outside your home. Removes an internet-facing administration route.
WPS Disable Wi-Fi Protected Setup if you do not use it to join devices. Removes an extra onboarding mechanism that is unnecessary once devices are connected.
UPnP Disable Universal Plug and Play when no application in your home needs it. Stops devices from automatically requesting port mappings.
Guest network Use a guest SSID for visitors or suitable low-trust devices, with a separate password. Reduces how widely the primary Wi-Fi password is shared. A guest network does not necessarily isolate clients on every router.

Changing the Wi-Fi password disconnects the TV and every other device. Reconnect the TV through its network settings using the new passphrase, then reconnect any device that lost access. Keep the router’s administrative password in a password manager rather than on a label visible to visitors.

4. Review LG privacy agreements and tracking controls

On the TV, open the section labeled Privacy & Terms, Legal or a similar privacy menu and read the agreements that are actually enabled on your set. The wording, defaults and available controls can differ by market, model and webOS version.

In a statement published September 12, 2026, LG says optional features include automatic content recognition, voice recognition and interest-based advertising, and that these features are not enabled by default. LG also says some uses require separate agreements, including interest-based and cross-device advertising. You can read LG’s explanation at Understanding Privacy On LG Smart TVs.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Automatic Content Recognition (ACR)

ACR can identify content shown on the screen for features such as recommendations or measurement, depending on the service and market. If you do not want that function, withdraw the applicable consent or switch ACR off in the TV’s privacy settings. The exact label may be “Viewing Information,” “ACR,” or another market-specific term, so read the description beside the toggle rather than relying on a generic online path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interest-based and cross-device advertising

These are separate choices in LG’s explanation. Declining them can reduce personalized advertising while leaving ordinary streaming and TV functions available, but the effect depends on the agreement and service. Review each consent individually instead of accepting a bundle you do not need.

Voice features

LG’s privacy notice says voice processing begins when a supported wake-word feature is activated or when a user presses a voice or AI remote button. LG also states that its smart TVs do not continuously record or transmit users’ conversations. These are LG’s descriptions of its own practices, not independent testing. If your household does not use voice search, disable the relevant voice assistant, wake-word or microphone permission where the model provides that control.

Device discovery and connections

LG describes device discovery as separate from voice processing: it helps the TV recognize and connect compatible external devices. Turn off discovery or connection features you do not use, especially in a household that never casts from phones or connects smart-home equipment. Disabling discovery can remove convenience, so test the devices your family actually relies on.

5. Remove apps and accounts you no longer need

The FTC’s Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home guidance recommends reviewing tracking settings and removing unused apps. On the LG TV, uninstall streaming or utility apps that nobody uses, sign out of accounts on services you have abandoned, and remove saved payment details where the service permits it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use a unique password for the LG account and for each streaming service. If a service supports two-step verification, enable it from that service’s account page. Do not install an app merely to test it and leave it signed in indefinitely; an unused account can still contain viewing history or payment information.

6. Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet deliberately

LG supports connecting a TV to the router with a standard LAN cable: Cat5 or higher with an RJ45 connector. Its webOS network-connection guide covers wired and wireless setup. A cable is an optional connection method, not proof that the TV is secure by itself.

Consideration Wi-Fi Wired Ethernet
Best fit TV is far from the router or you want a clean installation without a cable run. Router is nearby and running a cable is acceptable.
Reliability Can be affected by distance, walls, congestion and other wireless interference. Usually avoids local wireless interference between the TV and router.
Convenience No cable routing; easy to move the TV. Requires an available router port and a Cat5-or-higher RJ45 cable.
Security implication Secure when the router uses WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal and strong credentials. Still depends on the router, firmware and TV settings; the cable does not block tracking or guarantee safety.

Choose the connection that works reliably in your room, then apply the same firmware, router and privacy controls either way.

7. Treat MAC filtering as an optional administration tool

If your router lets you reserve an address or apply an allow-list, LG’s MAC-address guide can help you locate the TV’s wireless or wired MAC value. MAC filtering is easy to misconfigure and is not encryption; a determined attacker can imitate a permitted address. Use it only as an additional household-management measure, never as a replacement for WPA2/WPA3 and unique credentials.

Common problems and fixes

The TV cannot reconnect after changing the Wi-Fi password

On the TV, forget or disconnect from the old network, rescan for your SSID and enter the new passphrase exactly. Check whether the router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names; connect to the band that reaches the TV reliably. If a guest network is used, verify that it permits internet access and has not been configured to block the TV’s required services.

The update menu is missing

Confirm the model and webOS version, then use LG’s model-specific support page. Older sets may place updates under General → About This TV rather than Support → Software Update. If the TV cannot go online, use the official USB procedure and the exact model file.

A streaming app stops working after privacy changes

Read the consent description tied to that feature. Some services may require a particular agreement for recommendations, personalized advertising or cross-device functions. Re-enable only the specific option needed for the service, rather than accepting every optional agreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice search no longer responds

Check whether the wake-word or microphone permission was disabled and whether the remote’s voice button is supported on that model. Restoring voice control may require accepting a voice-related agreement. If voice functions are not wanted, leave them disabled and use text entry instead.

The wired connection does not work

Verify that the cable has an RJ45 plug, is Cat5 or higher, and is connected to an active router LAN port and the TV’s LAN port. Try another cable or port, then inspect the TV’s network status. A wired link does not bypass router firewall, firmware or password settings.

How often to check the TV

  • Monthly: check for TV and router updates if automatic updating is not enabled.
  • After a move or router replacement: verify the Wi-Fi security mode, administrator password and firewall.
  • Quarterly: review Privacy & Terms, ACR and advertising choices, voice and discovery settings, installed apps and signed-in accounts.
  • After selling or giving away the TV: sign out of every service and perform the model’s factory reset so personal accounts and network details are removed.

What the official guidance does—and does not—promise

LG’s support pages establish update and network-connection procedures, but exact paths and availability remain model-dependent. LG’s privacy statement describes LG’s own practices and controls; it is not an independent security audit. FTC recommendations apply broadly to home routers and connected devices rather than providing LG-specific menu instructions. Following the controls above substantially reduces avoidable exposure without requiring a VPN, DNS change, special router or Ethernet cable for every household.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
