To secure an Amazon Echo, review four separate controls: turn off its microphone when you do not want voice commands, limit Alexa activity history, disable camera access on supported Echo Show models, and check who can use Drop In. These controls do different jobs: history settings govern stored activity, while device controls limit future audio or camera access.
Echo devices listen locally for the wake word. Amazon says, “Anytime your Echo device detects the wake word, a visual or audible indicator will signal it is recording audio to stream to the cloud.” A false wake can happen, so checking Alexa History can help you see what Alexa heard and understood.

Quick checklist: the highest-impact Echo privacy controls
- Want to stop voice commands? Press the Echo’s microphone button. A red light indicates the microphones are off; Alexa will not respond to voice commands until you turn them back on.
- Want to limit stored Alexa activity? Open More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app, or use Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings to review history and retention choices.
- Have an Echo Show? Review camera access in the device settings. Camera access and the microphone are separate controls.
- Do not want someone to connect immediately? Review Drop In permissions and turn Drop In off for devices where it is not wanted.
No single setting does all of this: deleting history does not switch off a microphone, and switching off a microphone does not erase previously stored activity.
Review and limit Alexa voice history
Inspect what Alexa recorded and understood
In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Review Voice History. Amazon says this history can show audio streamed to the cloud, the transcript Alexa understood, typed requests, and Alexa’s responses. It can help you investigate an apparent false wake or a misunderstood request. It is not a complete inventory of every piece of information associated with Alexa use. Choose whether and how long activity is saved
Amazon offers automatic deletion after 3 or 18 months, measured from the last request in a chat. It also offers an option not to save voice recordings. According to Amazon, when that option is selected, recordings are deleted after processing, while transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in the chat. These are Amazon’s stated settings and retention periods, not independent measurements.
Not saving recordings can affect features. For example, Voice ID may stop working if the recordings used to create it are not retained. Review the trade-off before choosing a setting if you rely on Alexa personalization or recognition features.

Understand what deletion does—and does not—remove
Amazon says it begins securely deleting requested data from its cloud, with timing varying by data type and system operation. Deleting Alexa voice history is not a universal account wipe: associated records may remain, such as attachments, information supplied in interactions, actions Alexa took, product searches, reminders, lists, preferences, and other related information. Skill developers may retain their own information, which deleting Alexa history does not delete. Some device or mobile data and de-identified data may also remain.

Press the microphone button on an Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Show to disable its microphones. Amazon says a red light appears while the microphone is off. Alexa will not respond to voice commands until the microphones are re-enabled, although the Alexa app can still control the device. This is a physical, device-level control—not a history deletion setting. Button placement and indicators can differ by model, so check the instructions for your specific Echo.

Control camera access on Echo Show
On the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon lists these paths:
- On the screen: Settings > Privacy & Permissions > Camera Access.
- In the Alexa app: Devices > device name > Settings > Camera Settings.
Turning camera access off disables camera-dependent features, including Live View. Amazon also identifies Visual ID and camera-enabled Drop In as features that use camera access on supported devices. Echo speakers without cameras do not have this setting. Menus and availability vary by model and software release; for other Echo Show versions, use the current settings menu on the device. Review Drop In permissions and history
Drop In is optional, but unlike a regular call it can start an audio or video connection without the recipient answering. Household Drop In connects devices in the same Amazon household; connections outside it depend on approved contact permissions. Check approved contacts and turn Drop In off for any device where an immediate connection is not wanted. Amazon says the setting for a particular device is in that device’s communication settings.

Turning off the camera can limit video features while audio features may remain available, depending on the model and settings. Amazon’s Calling and Drop In History page says calls and Drop Ins can be accessed up to the last 90 days, with some calls, group calls, and Drop Ins excluded from the history view. You can review recent entries in the Alexa app and remove entries that appear there; this is not a guarantee that every communication will be listed.

Delete smart-home activity separately
Alexa’s smart-home device status and usage history has its own deletion and automatic-deletion controls. Amazon says users can delete this history or choose automatic deletion after 3 or 18 months. Deleting it may affect smart-home features, and it does not remove device names or all Alexa requests about those devices. Do not assume that clearing voice recordings also clears smart-home activity; review that history separately in Alexa Privacy. Amazon’s Alexa privacy FAQs describe these controls.
Keep the settings aligned with how you use Echo
Use the microphone button when you want a direct pause on voice-command listening; choose history and retention settings based on how much past activity you want saved; and review camera and communication permissions on each compatible device. Recheck the menus after an app or device software update, because settings paths and feature availability can vary by model and release.
