Secure an AI coding agent by limiting what it can access in the environment that runs it, enforcing tool permissions in backend policy, and recording its actions somewhere the agent cannot alter. A prompt telling an agent to “be careful” is not a security boundary: repository files, web pages, dependency documentation, and tool descriptions can contain malicious instructions. Give the agent a separate identity, only the access its task requires, short-lived credentials, restricted execution and network access, human review for risky actions, and centrally managed logs.
Why an AI coding agent needs the same boundaries as other software
A coding agent can read repository content, invoke tools, edit files, run commands, and communicate over a network. If it operates with a developer’s identity or credentials, an error or malicious instruction may have that developer’s access and reach. The risk is not limited to what the agent says in chat: tool calls and code it executes can have real effects.

Treat repository content, retrieved web pages, dependency instructions, and tool descriptions as untrusted input. They may try to persuade an agent to disclose secrets or perform actions beyond the task. The security controls must therefore sit outside the model’s instructions: in the execution environment, tool backends, identity system, and network policy. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet and AI Agent and MCP Security guidance describe these trust-boundary and least-privilege concerns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Give each agent a separate, narrow identity
Create a distinct service account, GitHub App, or bot identity for each agent or workload class. This makes activity attributable and lets you revoke one agent’s access without disrupting a developer’s account or unrelated automation. Bind tool calls to the initiating user or session as well as the agent identity, so the tool backend can check who requested an operation and whether it is allowed.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Start from deny. Explicitly allow only the repositories, paths, tools, commands, and operations the task needs.
- Separate read access from write access. Treat actions with broader impact—such as changing repository settings or deployment configuration—as separate permissions, not an automatic extension of code-editing access.
- Use short-lived, task-scoped credentials that can be revoked. Avoid placing production credentials, SSH keys, or long-lived developer secrets in prompts, configuration files, or the agent’s environment.
- Keep secrets outside code and logs. Where a workflow needs a credential, inject or broker only the required access for that task rather than exposing a general-purpose credential to agent-generated code.
OWASP’s General controls guidance recommends backend authorization, per-tool and per-operation allowlists, narrowly typed schemas, identity binding, argument validation, and logging rejected calls as well as successful ones. Enforce authorization in the backend that executes a tool call; an agent’s promise to follow a prompt is not a substitute.
2. Isolate execution and limit what the agent can change
Run the agent in an isolated environment such as a dev container, restricted shell, virtual machine, or ephemeral cloud workspace. Configure that environment to restrict filesystem writes and command execution, and deny access to credential stores, SSH keys, cloud CLI configuration, production secrets, and unrelated sensitive directories. Limit writable paths to the files needed for the task.
These environment types are options, not a security ranking. OWASP names them as isolation approaches, but the guidance reviewed here does not establish that one is universally stronger, faster, or cheaper. Evaluate the controls actually enforced in your setup:

| Isolation option | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|
| Dev container | Whether filesystem writes, executable tools, credentials, and outbound connections are constrained to the task’s requirements. |
| Restricted shell | Whether permitted commands and their arguments are enforced outside the agent, and whether shell access can reach sensitive files or services. |
| Virtual machine | Whether the guest’s filesystem, processes, credentials, and network routes are separated from sensitive host and production resources. |
| Ephemeral cloud workspace | How access is scoped for the task, what credentials are made available, and whether the workspace and its logs remain under organizational control. |
For every option, assess the strength and scope of filesystem, process, and network isolation; how credentials are scoped, injected, and revoked; whether tool permissions are default-deny and reviewable; how approvals work; and whether logs can be exported and monitored outside the agent. The available guidance does not provide a benchmark or cost comparison, so choose based on verified controls rather than an assumed ranking.
3. Decide whether the agent should have network access
Default outbound access to denied or tightly restricted, then allow only destinations required for the workflow. An agent that can reach arbitrary external systems may be able to send data out or contact an unapproved service. But denying all network access may prevent tasks that require approved source, package, or service access. Set the boundary according to the task and enforce it at the environment or network-policy layer.
OpenAI’s Sandbox security documentation recommends allowing outbound traffic only to approved endpoints and keeping application API keys outside the sandbox. Its May 8, 2026 article, Running Codex safely at OpenAI, describes managed network policies that allow expected destinations, block prohibited ones, and require approval for unfamiliar domains. These are documented examples, not evidence that every coding-agent product provides the same controls.

4. Enforce tool permissions at the backend
For every tool, decide which operations are allowed, for which identity and session, and with what argument limits. Validate arguments before execution; use narrow schemas rather than accepting arbitrary input where possible. Bind a call to its initiating user or session, and reject requests that exceed the policy. Log rejected attempts as well as completed calls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This matters especially when a tool has broader privileges than the agent’s immediate task. Without backend checks, the agent can become a confused deputy: it may use a tool’s authority in response to untrusted content even though the user did not authorize that action. OWASP’s General controls guidance recommends per-tool and per-operation allowlists and authorization in the backend. Prompt instructions can guide behavior, but they cannot enforce access control.
5. Put human approval at the risk boundary
Use explicit approval for actions that expand access, reach unfamiliar external systems, touch sensitive data, or make high-impact changes. Do not make every routine low-risk action an approval event: excessive prompts can encourage approval fatigue. Instead, safely allowlist routine actions within a sandbox and reserve human review for meaningful risk boundaries.

Require an independent human to review code changes before merge. The agent should not approve or merge its own pull request. For sensitive API workflows, OpenAI’s Cybersecurity checks guidance advises reviewing proposed tool calls against approved scope, denying unauthorized actions, pausing ambiguous or high-risk changes for human approval, preserving independent filesystem and network boundaries, and failing closed if review is unavailable. Those recommendations describe API workflow safeguards and should not be mistaken for a claim about Codex product-side sandboxing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Keep audit logs outside the agent’s control
Send logs to a centralized system the agent cannot modify or delete. Capture enough context to attribute an action and reconstruct what happened without recording secret values. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance says: “Log every tool call, command, file write, and network request with the agent identity, the initiating user, the session, and the resulting diff.”
Useful events include:
- Agent identity, initiating user, and session.
- Tool call, arguments, command, and tool result.
- Files written and the resulting change or diff.
- Network request and the applicable policy outcome.
- Approval decision and who made it.
- Rejected calls, validation failures, and denied access attempts.
Alert on events such as credential-file access, unexpected network destinations, bulk reads, newly introduced MCP servers, and edits to agent instruction files or CI configuration. OpenAI describes using Codex logs in its own security triage to examine the original user request, tool activity, approval decisions, tool results, and relevant network-policy decisions or blocks. That is an account of OpenAI’s practice, not a guarantee that every product exposes or retains the same records.
Best Value
Logs support detection and incident reconstruction; they do not prevent unauthorized actions. Preventive boundaries still need to be enforced by identity, environment, network, and tool policies.
A practical rollout sequence
- Define the task boundary. Identify the repositories, paths, tools, commands, network destinations, and operations the agent must use. Mark sensitive data and high-impact actions that are out of scope or require approval.
- Create an agent identity. Use a separate identity for the agent or workload class, bind actions to the initiating user or session, and issue only short-lived task credentials.
- Configure the execution boundary. Choose an isolated runtime, restrict writable paths and executable tools, and deny access to secret stores, SSH keys, production credentials, and unrelated sensitive directories.
- Apply default-deny policies. Allow only the required tool operations and outbound destinations. Validate arguments at the backend and reject out-of-scope calls.
- Set approval and review points. Require approval for ambiguous or high-impact actions, and independent human review before code is merged. Fail closed if a required review cannot be obtained.
- Export and monitor logs. Send action records to a system outside the agent’s control, avoid logging secret values, and alert on suspicious access or policy changes.
- Test the boundaries. Verify that disallowed file access, commands, tool operations, and network destinations are actually blocked, and that both rejected and successful actions appear in the central logs.
How to compare agent deployments
Do not choose an environment by its label alone. Ask the administrator or vendor to demonstrate the controls in the deployment you will use: filesystem, process, and network isolation; credential scope and revocation; default-deny tool policy; high-risk approval behavior; and exportable logs that your team can retain and monitor. Configuration options and safeguards vary by product and can change, so confirm the current documentation and verify enforcement in your own setup.
