What Microsoft Entra Agent ID does—and what it does not
Microsoft describes Entra Agent ID as an identity and security framework for AI agents that extends Entra identity controls to agent workloads. Its documented scope brings together identity management, access protection, governance, and compliance; Microsoft names OAuth 2.0, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and agent-to-agent (A2A) among the supported protocols. Availability and feature status can vary, so check the current Agent ID overview and what’s new documentation for the features and creation paths available in your tenant.

Microsoft positions Agent 365 as a broader enterprise agent-management and governance control plane built on the Entra identity foundation. Identity controls help establish who or what an agent is, what it may access, and how it is governed; they do not by themselves address every risk in an AI system, such as unsafe outputs or flaws in an agent’s application logic. Treat agent identities as managed, purpose-defined nonhuman identities with an accountable human sponsor, rather than as incidental credentials hidden inside an application. Microsoft’s security overview describes the identity-control context.

The central design choice is whether the agent acts within a signed-in user’s context or performs work independently. These patterns have different authorization boundaries; an autonomous agent’s grants are not limited by whichever employee happens to be signed in.

| Pattern | Identity and authorization | When it fits | Permission boundary to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive, user-directed agent | Acts for a signed-in user using delegated permissions in an on-behalf-of (OBO) flow. | The agent carries out a user’s request using data or actions that user is authorized to access. | Explain what user-authorized data and actions the agent requests, and keep requested delegated access aligned with the task. |
| Autonomous agent | Operates independently with its own identity and application/resource permissions. | A defined task must run without a user directing each action. | Grant only the application or resource permissions required for that task, and govern those grants independently of an employee’s sign-in. |
These patterns and their distinctions are described in Microsoft’s Entra security overview. Do not treat an ordinary app registration as equivalent to an agent identity when you need agent-specific lifecycle tracking and sponsor accountability. Use supported agent creation and management paths for the workload, and confirm the behavior of the particular product or creation channel in your tenant. The Agent ID overview describes the framework; the governance overview describes its governance context.
Give an agent only the access its task requires
Scope grants to the job
Start with the task and the resources it must reach, then grant the narrowest suitable permissions: required scopes, API resources, or sites rather than broad access added for convenience. Revisit grants as the task changes and remove permissions that are no longer needed. Microsoft’s Agent ID best practices recommend limiting permissions and periodically right-sizing them.
Use blueprints for shared safeguards
Agent identity blueprints are templates for common kinds of agent instances. Microsoft’s security and governance guidance describes applying permissions, Conditional Access rules, and governance controls at blueprint level so instances inherit shared controls. Use a blueprint to standardize safeguards across comparable instances, but verify which controls a particular instance actually inherits and how its creation channel behaves in your tenant. The security overview and governance overview describe blueprint-level controls.

Govern access through packages where applicable
Microsoft’s governance overview says entitlement-management access packages can assign agent identities to security groups, grant application OAuth API permissions—including Microsoft Graph application permissions—and assign Microsoft Entra roles. Policies must be configured to include agent identities; legacy service principals may need a separate assignment policy. Check current tenant documentation and test the intended package and policy behavior before relying on it for a production grant. Microsoft’s agent identity governance documentation covers these options.
Design Conditional Access for nonhuman identities
Conditional Access can govern the conditions under which an agent identity accesses assigned resources, and Microsoft’s security overview describes evaluating agent context and risk. Identity Protection risk signals can feed Conditional Access and remediation. Configure and validate these controls for the specific agent and resource; their presence is not proof that every threat or agent action will be detected. Microsoft’s security overview describes the risk and access-control model.
A critical constraint is that agents cannot satisfy interactive controls such as an MFA prompt. Do not design an autonomous agent’s authentication flow on the assumption that it can respond to one. Microsoft’s best practices recommend dedicated policies based on agent identity filters, risk signals, and named locations, and testing policies in report-only mode before enforcement. Also review broad user MFA policies for unintended effects on agent flows. The Agent ID best-practices guidance covers these recommendations.

Make lifecycle ownership and access review explicit
Give each agent a human sponsor accountable for lifecycle and access decisions, and identify technical owners responsible for operations. A sponsor is not a substitute for operational ownership: both roles should be clear enough that access decisions and incident actions do not depend on an undocumented assumption about who maintains the agent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMicrosoft’s governance material describes sponsor oversight, expiration notifications, approval-based extensions, access reviews, and lifecycle workflows for sponsor changes. It also describes discovering agent identities in the Entra admin center and through Microsoft Graph to support inventory and reduce unmanaged sprawl. The governance overview and Graph Agent ID API overview provide the documented context.
- Approve creation: use a supported agent creation path and record the agent’s purpose and technical owner.
- Assign accountability: name a human sponsor who can make or route lifecycle and access decisions.
- Set the identity pattern and scope: choose delegated user context or an autonomous identity, then grant only the task’s required access.
- Apply shared safeguards: use blueprint controls where suitable, and validate the controls each instance receives.
- Set review and expiry arrangements: use available governance policies for access review, expiration, and any approved extension.
- Handle change and exit: revisit access when the agent’s purpose changes or its sponsor leaves; assign a replacement sponsor through the supported workflow, or restrict and decommission the identity if the agent is no longer needed.
This is an operational sequence for applying Microsoft’s described lifecycle and governance controls, not a claim that every tenant or agent channel supports each step identically. Confirm product support and licensing for the features you plan to use. Microsoft’s governance overview lists licensing prerequisites for agent identity governance, including Microsoft 365 E7 or Agent 365 paired with at least Microsoft Entra P1 or Microsoft 365 E3; licensing and product terms can change, so verify the current governance documentation for the intended tenant before treating that as a current plan requirement.

Monitor activity and prepare to contain an incident
Microsoft says Entra sign-in reports and audit logs capture agent activity, including identity creation, configuration changes, and role or permission assignments. Use those records to check whether an agent follows its intended authentication pattern, identify unexpected grants or configuration changes, and support incident review. For automation, consult the Microsoft Graph Agent ID API documentation for current API permissions, version, and operations. The available logs and APIs support monitoring; they should not be treated as evidence that every risky action will be detected.
Microsoft’s administrative guidance describes disabling agent identities and restricting agent authentication, including tenant-wide Conditional Access controls. During response, identify the affected identity or blueprint, apply the appropriate restriction, and verify that access has actually been revoked. Follow current product procedures for removal or deletion rather than assuming that disabling, removing, and deleting have the same effect. The Graph overview describes API and administrative context.
Explain agent consent before users approve it
Microsoft’s sign-in guidance describes two consent steps: adding an agent to the organization, then allowing it to access particular data or perform particular actions. Explain each requested permission in plain language so a user can understand what the agent will be able to reach or do. Users who are unsure whether a request is safe should ask an administrator. Consent is not a replacement for least privilege, access review, or lifecycle governance. Microsoft’s Agent ID sign-in process documentation describes the consent stages.
