How to Secure A2A Agent Communication with Authentication and Authorization

A practical guide to A2A security: protect HTTPS connections, authenticate callers at the HTTP boundary, and authorize every operation and returned resource.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure A2A communication by protecting the connection with HTTPS, authenticating callers at the HTTP boundary, and having the receiving server authorize every operation and every resource it returns. A2A does not put caller identity in its JSON-RPC task payloads, nor does it prescribe one identity provider or authorization model. Treat it as an application-to-application security problem built on established web practices.

How A2A security is divided

A2A security has several distinct layers. TLS protects traffic in transit and helps the client verify the server it reached. HTTP-level credentials let the receiving server authenticate a caller. Authorization then determines which protocol operations, skills, tasks, and data that caller may access.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The A2A Protocol Specification describes the approach this way: “A2A treats agents as standard enterprise applications, relying on established web security practices.” The protocol carries task and message information, but identity and access decisions belong to the surrounding web-security architecture and the receiving server.

  • Transport security: Protect the connection and validate the server certificate.
  • Authentication: Establish which user, workload, or other caller is making the HTTP request.
  • Authorization: Decide whether that authenticated caller may perform the requested operation and see the resulting data.

These controls solve different problems. Encryption alone does not tell an agent what a caller is allowed to do, and a valid credential does not automatically grant access to every task or resource.

Protect the connection and verify the server

Use HTTPS for production A2A HTTP bindings. The current specification recommends modern TLS configurations, including TLS 1.3 or later. Clients should validate the server certificate against trusted certificate authorities during the TLS handshake. That validation helps establish that the encrypted connection is with the intended endpoint, rather than merely encrypting a connection to an unverified one.

Treat these as transport requirements and recommendations, not as proof that a particular deployment is secure. The server still needs to authenticate callers and enforce authorization after a connection is established. Because the specification and repository evolve, check the version implemented by your agents when making version-sensitive configuration decisions.

Connection checks for deployment

  • Serve production A2A traffic over HTTPS rather than an unencrypted HTTP connection.
  • Configure a modern TLS profile; the specification recommends TLS 1.3 or later.
  • Ensure clients validate the remote certificate against trusted certificate authorities. Do not disable certificate validation to work around a trust or hostname problem.
  • Investigate certificate, hostname, or trust-chain failures and correct the endpoint or trust configuration before allowing the client to proceed.

Think of this as two related but distinct checks: HTTPS protects traffic in transit, while certificate validation helps the client confirm the server endpoint. Neither check authenticates the caller to the server. Keep all three layers in view when reviewing a connection: the client validates the server, the server validates the caller, and the server applies authorization rules to that caller’s requested work.

Use the Agent Card to advertise requirements, not disclose credentials

An Agent Card describes the agent’s identity, capabilities, skills, endpoint, and authentication information. A client can inspect the card to learn which authentication schemes the server supports and what security requirements apply. The card is a discovery mechanism; it is not a place to publish the secret the client will use.

Clients acquire actual credentials through an out-of-band process appropriate to the selected scheme, then attach them to requests through the relevant HTTP mechanism. For bearer credentials, that can mean an HTTP Authorization header. The A2A task payload itself should not be treated as the carrier for caller identity.

If an Agent Card contains sensitive information, protect the endpoint that serves it. Appropriate controls can include authentication, network restrictions, or mutual TLS, depending on the deployment’s trust boundaries. Prefer dynamic out-of-band credential acquisition to plaintext secret values embedded in a publicly accessible card.

Client and server responsibilities around the card

  • Server: Declare supported authentication schemes and relevant security requirements without publishing credential values.
  • Client: Read the declared requirements, obtain credentials through the established out-of-band process, and send them using the appropriate HTTP mechanism.
  • Operator: Restrict access to the card endpoint when the information it exposes is sensitive.

Do not assume every Agent Card must be private. The relevant decision is whether the card reveals information that should be limited in your deployment. If it does, select access controls that match the endpoint’s trust boundaries; the available options include authentication, network restrictions, or mutual TLS. In either case, keep the distinction clear: access to card information is not a substitute for authenticating and authorizing subsequent A2A requests.

Authenticate each inbound request at the receiving boundary

The A2A server is responsible for authenticating its callers. Validate the credential at the receiving boundary for each request and associate the resulting authenticated identity with the authorization context used to handle that request. The protocol does not define the credential-issuance workflow; that must fit the identity system and trust relationship of the deployment.

Authentication answers “who is making this request?” It does not, by itself, answer whether that identity may invoke a particular skill, retrieve a task, or receive particular data. Do not infer that a caller is authorized merely because its request reached the endpoint or its credential was accepted.

Decide whose identity the system needs

Before selecting a credential scheme, decide whether the request needs to represent a person, an agent or service workload, or both. An enterprise may need to distinguish the initiating user from the service that forwards or performs the A2A request. The A2A material supports established web mechanisms, particularly OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, but does not require either one for every deployment.

Use the identity model that matches the system’s trust boundaries. The protocol does not establish a universal identity provider, a universal token design, or a single rule for representing a user and a workload together. Those are deployment decisions that should be consistent across the client, receiving server, and the surrounding identity architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure the server’s policy decision is based on the identity it has authenticated, rather than on an identity claim supplied only inside task content. Since A2A does not carry caller identity as a task-payload field, the HTTP-side authentication and the server’s authorization context are the relevant boundary for these decisions.

Authorize every operation and constrain the data returned

Authorization is implementation-specific in A2A. The receiving server should make an access decision for the requested protocol operation, using policy inputs such as caller identity, requested skill, attempted action, relevant data policy, and OAuth scopes where applicable. Apply least privilege: grant only the access needed for the caller’s authorized work.

Authorization must cover both actions and results. A request that is permitted to run is not automatically permitted to expose every resource the operation could find. Keep returned tasks and other resources inside the caller’s authorized access boundaries. This includes task retrieval and listing where those operations apply.

Do not let client-supplied filters define the security boundary

Task identifiers, context values, and filters supplied by a client can help express what it wants, but they should not be the only access check. The server must independently enforce which tasks and resources the authenticated caller may access. In particular, an omitted context or filter must not broaden a query beyond that caller’s authorized boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each operation, evaluate the requested action and the resources it touches or returns. A useful policy review asks whether the caller’s identity and applicable scopes permit the operation, whether the requested skill or action is allowed, and whether every result is within the caller’s permitted data scope. The exact policy model—roles, scopes, attributes, or a combination—is not prescribed universally by A2A.

Map permissions to actual work

Keep permissions narrow enough to distinguish meaningful differences in capability. For example, permission to invoke a skill should not silently imply permission to list every task or read every task result. Likewise, an operation’s ability to find a resource does not establish that its caller may receive that resource. Define and enforce those distinctions in the receiving server’s policy layer.

Where OAuth scopes are used, make their relationship to skills, actions, and data access explicit in the deployment’s policy. A scope is useful only if the server checks it against the requested operation and the resources involved; the protocol does not prescribe a universal scope vocabulary or mapping.

A practical review can trace one request end to end: identify the authenticated caller; identify the requested skill, action, or protocol operation; decide whether the applicable policy permits it; then check each task or other resource before it is returned. Include requests that list or retrieve tasks, not just requests that start work. Check behavior both when a client provides a context or filter and when it omits one. This makes it easier to spot a policy that gates the action but leaves its output too broad.

Choose an authentication approach that fits the deployment

The official A2A material supports using established web-security mechanisms but does not establish one best scheme for all agent deployments or provide enough operational detail to rank all supported scheme families. OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are cited in the enterprise guidance as compatible approaches, not mandatory choices. Bearer credentials are one example of how credentials may be transmitted in an HTTP request.

Decision area Questions to answer
Credential issuance and acquisition Who issues the credential, and how does the client obtain it out of band after reading the Agent Card’s requirements?
Credential transmission and protection How will the credential be sent through the HTTP layer and protected in transit? Which component validates it at the receiving boundary?
Identity represented Does the request need to represent a user, a workload, or both?
Permission mapping How do the deployment’s permissions or scopes map to skills, actions, tasks, and data boundaries?
Credential lifecycle How will credentials be rotated or revoked in the surrounding identity system?

These are selection criteria for the deployment, not A2A-mandated rankings or a required authorization architecture. The protocol material does not settle token audience design, credential-rotation procedures, or gateway placement; do not assume that a particular choice is an A2A requirement.

Use the comparison questions to evaluate an approach in context rather than selecting by name alone. An identity system must provide a way for an authorized client to acquire the credential out of band, and the receiving server must be able to validate it and use the authenticated identity in its policy decisions. The design also needs to represent the relevant caller—user, workload, or both—and connect its permissions to the skills, actions, and data it may access. Finally, consider how credentials are rotated or revoked in the surrounding identity system. The A2A guidance does not provide a universal ranking across these dimensions or make one provider a requirement.

Implement the controls in a practical sequence

  1. Identify the trust boundaries. List the agents, clients, servers, and any discovery endpoint involved. Decide which callers need user identity, workload identity, or both, and which endpoints expose sensitive information.
  2. Secure the transport. Configure HTTPS for production HTTP bindings, use a modern TLS configuration, and retain certificate validation on clients.
  3. Publish authentication requirements safely. Make the Agent Card accurately describe the supported scheme and security requirements. Do not include plaintext secret values; restrict access to the card endpoint if its contents are sensitive.
  4. Establish out-of-band credential acquisition. Choose the identity process that fits the deployment and provide a way for authorized clients to obtain credentials without placing them in the card or A2A task payload.
  5. Authenticate requests at the server. Validate inbound credentials at the receiving boundary and bind the authenticated identity to the context used for policy decisions.
  6. Write operation-level authorization rules. Decide which identities may invoke which skills and actions, and how scopes or other policy inputs affect each decision.
  7. Enforce resource-level boundaries. Check access to tasks and other resources both when they are requested and before they are returned. Test listing and retrieval behavior, including requests with omitted filters or context.
  8. Review the implementation against its protocol version. Use the exact A2A specification version implemented by the deployment when confirming version-sensitive behavior, since the specification and repository evolve.

Before treating the sequence as complete, walk through representative allowed and disallowed cases. For example, check whether a caller permitted to invoke one skill is also able to list or retrieve tasks outside its authorized boundary; the latter access should be decided separately by policy. Confirm that a request without an optional context or filter remains within the caller’s allowed data scope. These checks follow from the server’s responsibility to authorize operations and constrain results, without assuming a particular test framework or policy product.

Common security mistakes to avoid

  • Putting credentials in an Agent Card: A card advertises authentication requirements; clients should acquire credentials out of band.
  • Assuming HTTPS is enough: TLS protects the connection, but the server still needs to authenticate callers and authorize requested actions and data.
  • Trusting a credential as blanket permission: Authentication identifies a caller; authorization must still constrain each operation and its results.
  • Relying only on a task ID or client filter: The server, not a client-supplied identifier or filter, must enforce the caller’s resource boundary.
  • Assuming A2A mandates one identity design: The protocol does not dictate one universal identity provider, role model, or scope vocabulary.
  • Treating discovery as harmless by default: An Agent Card may expose sensitive information, so protect access to it when necessary.
  • Disabling certificate validation to get a connection working: An encrypted connection to an unverified endpoint does not establish that the client reached the intended server.
  • Confusing a declared scheme with an issued credential: The Agent Card describes supported requirements; the client still needs to obtain actual credentials through the appropriate out-of-band process.

What A2A does—and does not—standardize

A2A provides guidance for securing the connection, advertising authentication requirements through the Agent Card, and assigning authentication and authorization responsibilities to the receiving server. It relies on established web-security practices rather than carrying identity in JSON-RPC task content. Enterprise guidance points to OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect as compatible mechanisms.

It does not supply a universal identity provider, dictate one authorization model, or settle every deployment architecture choice. Credential acquisition, user-versus-workload identity, permission mapping, and the surrounding policy design must be selected for the agents and trust boundaries being connected.

The A2A Protocol Specification and repository evolve. The transport, Agent Card, and server authorization guidance here reflects the specification checked on 2026-10-13; confirm the version your implementation uses before relying on version-sensitive details. In particular, token audience design, exact credential-rotation procedures, and gateway placement remain deployment choices rather than universal A2A prescriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does A2A put caller identity in a JSON-RPC task payload?

No. Identity is handled at the HTTP or surrounding security layer, not as a caller-identity field in the A2A task payload. The receiving server authenticates the request and uses that identity for authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does A2A require OAuth 2.0 or OpenID Connect?

No. Enterprise guidance points to OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect as compatible established web mechanisms, but A2A does not require either for every deployment or prescribe a universal identity provider.

Should an Agent Card contain an API key or other secret?

No. The card advertises supported authentication schemes and security requirements. Clients should obtain actual credentials out of band and send them through the appropriate HTTP mechanism; bearer credentials, for example, may be sent in an Authorization header.

Is HTTPS enough to secure A2A communication?

No. HTTPS and modern TLS protect traffic in transit, and clients should validate the server certificate against trusted certificate authorities. The receiving server must still authenticate callers and authorize operations and returned resources.

Who is responsible for authorizing an A2A request?

The receiving server. It should authorize each operation using deployment-specific policy inputs such as caller identity, requested skill, attempted action, relevant data policy, and OAuth scopes where applicable, and keep results within the caller’s authorized boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should happen if a task request omits a context or filter?

The omission must not expand access. The server should independently enforce the authenticated caller’s authorized task and resource boundaries, including for task listing or retrieval.

The Bottom Line

Secure A2A with HTTPS and certificate validation, use the Agent Card to advertise requirements without exposing secrets, and authenticate callers at the receiving server. Then authorize each operation and each returned resource with least privilege. OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are compatible options, not universal mandates; the identity model and access policy must fit the deployment.
