How to Secure a WordPress Site After a Security Update

A WordPress update is not a security guarantee. Verify it in the dashboard, review Site Health, test important site functions, maintain the full stack, and keep a restorable backup.

A completed WordPress security update is a useful first step, not proof that your site is fully secure or that a prior compromise has been removed. Check the update result, review Site Health, test key pages and workflows, and resolve any remaining maintenance or configuration problems.

1. Confirm the update completed

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, open Dashboard > Updates and check the update result and any items still waiting to be installed. If plugin or theme auto-updates are enabled, they rely on scheduled WordPress Cron tasks; an enabled setting does not by itself confirm that an update ran. Check for related errors in Site Health. See the WordPress auto-update documentation.
  2. Open Tools > Site Health > Status. Review critical issues, recommended improvements, and passed checks. Use the Info tab when you need details about the server, plugins, themes, or filesystem. Site Health reports conditions; it does not automatically fix every issue. See the Site Health documentation.

Pay particular attention to failed background updates, outdated PHP, and plugins that still need updating. Interface labels can vary by WordPress version and hosting setup.

2. Check the site visitors actually use

Visit the homepage and a representative selection of pages. Test the functions that matter to your site, such as logging in, submitting a form, completing checkout, or publishing a post. An update can finish while a theme or plugin issue still affects a specific page or workflow; test the functions relevant to your site rather than assuming the dashboard check covers them.

3. Bring the rest of the stack up to date

Plugins and themes

Check that installed plugins and themes are current and obtained from trusted sources. Remove plugins you do not use. If a plugin has not been updated since the current WordPress core release, its compatibility may be unknown. WordPress provides guidance on managing plugins and hardening a WordPress installation.

PHP and hosting software

WordPress core is only one part of the stack; the server-side software also needs maintenance. PHP is configured by your hosting provider, so do not change its version casually. Back up first, check theme and plugin compatibility, and confirm your host supports the version you plan to use. Follow the WordPress PHP update guide.

4. Make sure you can recover

Keep regular backups of both your site files and database, and know how to restore them. WordPress recommends a current backup before plugin updates and regular backups around auto-updates. When comparing backup approaches, check whether both files and database are covered, whether copies are independent or off-site, how often they are retained, how access is protected, and whether a restore has been tested. WordPress’s hardening guidance also discusses read-only media as one possible integrity measure.

5. Treat signs of compromise as an incident

An update does not establish that a previously compromised site has been cleaned. If you find unexpected administrator accounts, unfamiliar files or code, malicious redirects, or other evidence of tampering, stop treating the issue as routine update housekeeping. Document what you find, remove or replace affected files, and change passwords after cleanup is complete. Follow WordPress’s hacked-site response guidance; seek qualified incident-response help if you cannot confidently identify and remove the changes.
