A Wi-Fi-connected garage door opener deserves a place on your home-device security checklist, but there is no evidence in the sources cited here that openers are more overlooked or riskier than other connected devices. Start by finding the opener on your router, then check the router and the opener’s account and settings separately. The available controls vary by router and opener model.
Find the opener on your home network
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) calls the router “the key to privacy” in the internet-of-things world. Begin in your router’s connected-device list; the menu may call it Connected devices, Wireless clients or DHCP clients. Look for the opener by its device name or manufacturer. If you cannot identify it, consult the router’s instructions or the opener maker’s support information rather than guessing.

Keep the two kinds of credentials distinct: the Wi-Fi password lets a device join the network, while the router administrator credentials let someone change the network’s settings. The opener may also have its own app account. Review each separately. The FTC’s [connected-device security guidance] recommends knowing what is on the network and securing accounts and devices.
Secure the router first
Use WPA3 Personal for Wi-Fi security if your router supports it; otherwise, use WPA2 Personal. Change the router administrator username and password and the Wi-Fi password if they are still set to defaults. Install available router software updates. These steps protect the network the opener depends on, but do not replace checking the opener’s own account and controls.

The FTC also advises disabling remote management, WPS and UPnP because they can make a network less secure. Before turning any of them off, check whether your household relies on the feature and follow the router maker’s instructions. When finished, log out of the router administrator account and check that its firewall is enabled. See the FTC’s [home Wi-Fi security steps] for guidance.
Consider a guest network
A guest network can let visitors connect without sharing the main Wi-Fi password. It can also help keep a guest device infected with malware off the primary network. Check your router’s instructions for how to set it up and what access it allows.

If the router only offers WPA or WEP
After updating the router software, check its available security options. The FTC describes WPA and WEP as outdated and not secure. If WPA2 Personal and WPA3 Personal are still unavailable, it advises considering a new router. This is a conditional reason to consider replacement, not a recommendation that every household needs a new router.

Check the opener’s account and device settings
Use the opener maker’s current manual or support page for model-specific menus; not every opener offers the same features. As general connected-device guidance, the FTC recommends:

- Changing any default credentials supplied with the product.
- Enabling two-factor authentication if the product offers it.
- Installing available opener firmware updates and keeping its current app updated.
- Turning off features you do not use and disconnecting obsolete equipment.
These are separate from router updates: updating the router does not itself update the opener, and updating the opener does not secure the router’s administrator account. The FTC’s [guidance on internet-connected devices] covers these general checks.

If you are selling
- Remove your administrative access and personal information from the opener account and associated device.
- Reset the device according to the maker’s instructions.
If you are buying
- Reset the opener and set it up under your own account.
- Review privacy settings and permissions, and check the maker’s support and update information.

The official sources cited here offer practical security advice for routers and internet-connected devices. They do not establish that garage door openers are the least-watched devices on home Wi-Fi, that they are more vulnerable than other devices, or that they rank higher in security risk.
