Build the interface with Streamlit’s st.chat_message and st.chat_input, keep the working transcript in st.session_state, and add separate services for durable conversation records, credentials, and access control. Streamlit provides the chat components; it does not turn a chat demo into a complete support system by itself.
How to build a customer support UI with Streamlit
A basic support conversation needs three pieces: a place to display each turn, an input for the customer, and a way to redraw the conversation after Streamlit reruns the app. The official Streamlit chat tutorial demonstrates this pattern using chat elements and Session State.

- Render turns: Use
st.chat_message("user")andst.chat_message("assistant")to display messages with the appropriate speaker styling. - Collect customer text: Use
st.chat_inputfor the conversation input. - Keep a transcript for reruns: Initialize a message list in
st.session_state, display its messages on each run, then append the new user message and the assistant response.
A minimal structure looks like this; the response-generation function is intentionally left to your application:
import streamlit as st
if "messages" not in st.session_state:
st.session_state.messages = []
for message in st.session_state.messages:
with st.chat_message(message["role"]):
st.write(message["content"])
prompt = st.chat_input("How can we help?")
if prompt:
st.session_state.messages.append({"role": "user", "content": prompt})
with st.chat_message("user"):
st.write(prompt)
# Replace this with your support workflow or response service.
answer = get_support_response(prompt)
st.session_state.messages.append({"role": "assistant", "content": answer})
with st.chat_message("assistant"):
st.write(answer)
Each chat-message container can hold other Streamlit elements, not just prose. That lets a response include structured content where useful. For a long-running operation, Streamlit documents st.status; for streamed output, use st.write_stream. The documentation describes these presentation options but does not establish a performance advantage or better user outcome for either one. See the chat elements reference.

What Session State does—and what it does not
st.session_state is scoped to a user’s Streamlit session and preserves values across app reruns. That is why it works for keeping the transcript visible while the app processes successive turns. It is not durable conversation storage: Streamlit’s Session State fundamentals guide says a browser reload resets state and starts a new session.
If the support workflow needs records after a reload or across sessions, write them to a persistent data store and load the appropriate conversation when needed. The Streamlit tutorial shows a basic chatbot pattern; it does not prescribe a database or define a ticket-retention system. Choose storage and retention rules to fit your application and its data-handling requirements.

Keep deployment credentials out of the app source
Do not put API keys or other credentials directly in source code. Use the secret-management mechanism for the environment where the app runs. For example, Streamlit Community Cloud supports secrets outside the code, and the official chat tutorial reads an API key through st.secrets. See Community Cloud secrets management.

Authentication is not authorization
If customers or agents sign in, Streamlit supports OpenID Connect through st.login(), st.user, and st.logout(). Authentication establishes who the user is; your application still needs authorization checks to determine which customer records and actions that user may access. Streamlit’s authentication guide puts the distinction plainly: “OIDC supports authentication, but not authorization: OIDC connections tell you who a user is (authentication), but don’t give you the authority to impersonate them (authorization).”

Apply those checks to the data and operations behind the chat—not only to what the interface chooses to display. A signed-in user should not be able to retrieve another customer’s conversation merely by changing an identifier or making a direct request to an application endpoint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What this interface still needs for production support
The chat components and transcript pattern establish a conversational UI, not a complete ticketing or service workflow. Before exposing customer data, decide how the app handles durable records, access to each record and action, and any operational needs such as human-agent handoff. Those policies and systems are application responsibilities; the cited Streamlit examples do not define them.
