How to Secure a Smart Home Network With a Separate IoT Network

A separate IoT network can limit how smart devices communicate with computers and phones. Check your router’s isolation behavior, test household controls, and keep devices updated.

Put smart-home devices on a dedicated, isolated network when your router supports it, and keep personal computers and phones on your trusted network. This separation can limit communication between device groups and help contain malware, but it does not replace strong passwords, updates, or checking that your smart-home controls still work.

What a separate IoT network does—and does not do

Network segmentation divides devices into separate groups. For a household, that can mean keeping cameras, lights, plugs, and speakers apart from computers and phones. CISA recommends considering a separate, dedicated network for internet-connected devices. Its August 2024 segmentation guidance explains that separating groups can prevent devices from communicating with one another and help limit malware spreading from one device to another.

Segmentation is a boundary, not a guarantee. It does not fix weak device passwords, outdated software, insecure router settings, or vulnerabilities that a manufacturer no longer supports. Nor does a separate Wi-Fi name, by itself, prove that devices are isolated. Confirm the router’s documented behavior and test the controls you depend on.

Choose a setup your router can actually enforce

Approach When it fits What to verify
Guest Wi-Fi or a built-in IoT network A simpler option if the router provides meaningful separation. CISA identifies guest Wi-Fi as a way many routers can create separate groups. Whether IoT clients are blocked from the main network and, if relevant, from one another; whether the phone or hub can still reach devices as needed.
VLANs and router firewall or access rules A more configurable option when the router supports it and you are comfortable managing network rules. Which traffic is permitted between networks, how local discovery works, and how you will maintain the rules. Follow the router manual; CISA notes that complex configurations may require additional setup.

The exact capabilities depend on the router model and its software. Check the manual or manufacturer support documentation rather than assuming that labels such as “guest,” “IoT,” or “isolation” all mean the same thing. CISA’s general router guidance also notes that a built-in firewall does not stop wireless users who are already within range from connecting to the wireless network; that 2011 guidance is not a current menu walkthrough or a substitute for checking your router’s controls.

  • OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
  • Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
  • Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
  • Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Set up and test the separate network

  1. Make an inventory. List the smart devices you want to move, the phone or hub that controls each one, and any other devices that need local access. This makes it easier to spot dependencies after the change.
  2. Check the router’s options and manual. Look for guest Wi-Fi, an IoT network, VLANs, network isolation, and firewall or access rules. Find out what traffic is blocked between the proposed IoT network and your main network.
  3. Connect IoT devices to the isolated network. Leave personal computers and phones on the trusted network unless the device’s documented setup process requires otherwise. Follow the router and device instructions for joining or moving Wi-Fi devices.
  4. Test the features you use. Try the vendor app, hubs, voice assistants, casting, and local discovery. Some functions may require communication between networks; compatibility depends on the specific devices and router. If a feature stops working, consult their manuals and adjust only the access rules needed for that function rather than removing all separation.

If your existing router cannot provide the separation you need, a router with documented VLAN support or an isolated IoT or guest-network feature may be a task-enabling option. Check its manufacturer documentation before buying; a feature name alone is not evidence of a particular isolation policy.

Harden the router and smart devices

  • Replace default passwords. Change the router’s default administrator password and each IoT device’s default password. Use unique, strong passwords where the device permits them.
  • Use current Wi-Fi encryption. CISA recommends WPA2 or WPA3 at minimum and disabling legacy WEP and WPA. Use the strongest option supported by your router and devices.
  • Install updates. Keep router and device software updated, and use apps from trusted vendors and sources.
  • Review app permissions. Check what access smart-home apps have on your phone and remove permissions they do not need.

These precautions complement segmentation; they are not made unnecessary by putting devices on another network. The recommendations above draw on CISA’s 2020 IoT tips and 2020 wireless-security guidance.
