Bob itself does not provide security event logging, so its Admin UI and service logs are not a complete audit system.
Start with the right security boundary
Bob self-hosted runs on customer-managed OpenShift. IBM says customers configure networking, storage, and identity and are responsible for lifecycle operations; platform-level security logging and monitoring are also customer responsibilities. Assign owners for cluster configuration, identity, certificates, model services, logging, incident response, and upgrades before deployment. See IBM’s Bob self-hosted overview and installation overview.

IBM’s installation separates the operator namespace from the operand namespace. Installation-created RBAC objects are restricted to those namespaces, but the cluster-scoped bundle includes resources such as CRDs, ClusterRoles, and ClusterRoleBindings. Review that bundle with the platform and security teams before applying it.
Use staged, least-privilege installation
IBM’s prerequisites call for cluster-admin or equivalent privileges for the cluster-wide installation step. Its staged workflow then allows bobctl install to run in the Bob namespaces with namespace administrator permissions. This is preferable to giving routine application operators broad cluster-admin credentials when the scoped workflow meets your change-control requirements.

- Review the prerequisites. Confirm the required cluster and namespace setup in IBM’s installation prerequisites.
- Generate and inspect cluster-scoped YAML. Have an authorized cluster administrator review the resources and approve the required cluster-wide changes before applying them.
- Apply the approved cluster-scoped resources. Keep this action with the authorized platform role rather than a general application account.
- Install Bob in its namespaces. Where appropriate, use namespace administrator permissions for the namespace-scoped stage.
- Record the changes and owners. Preserve the reviewed manifests and change record under your organization’s platform procedures.
Establish endpoint trust and user identity
Choose the certificate approach before exposing Bob
Decide whether to use an organization-provided certificate already trusted by managed workstations or the certificate authority (CA) generated during installation. If using a private or self-signed CA, distribute the correct CA certificate through your approved device-management process and verify its identity and validity according to your certificate procedures. IBM documents the endpoint in the form https://api.<cluster-domain>; the Bob IDE and Bob Shell clients cannot establish secure HTTPS connections until the workstation trusts the endpoint certificate. See IBM’s configuration guide and access instructions.
Connect Bob to organizational identity
IBM documents LDAP or Active Directory federation and direct Keycloak user accounts. Choose based on how your organization governs accounts and identity lifecycle. Define MFA, group mapping, account provisioning, and prompt deprovisioning through your standard identity policies; IBM’s cited Bob guidance does not prescribe a universal configuration for those controls.

- Please note, this is a barebone only. A system memory, a storage drive and an operating system are needed to complete this system
- 13-19 inches 1u, 50w power, with power cord, make sure to use a big brand memory and ssd/hdd with quality assurance

| Decision | Option | Security and operational considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint certificate | Organization-provided certificate trusted by managed devices | Use existing trust deployment and certificate ownership and rotation processes. |
| Endpoint certificate | Installation-generated or other private CA | Plan trusted CA distribution and client onboarding; client access depends on workstation trust. |
| Identity | LDAP or Active Directory federation | Align with the existing centralized identity lifecycle and account governance. |
| Identity | Direct Keycloak users | Plan who administers accounts and how access is reviewed and removed. |
Limit model connectivity and configure safety controls
Bob requires access to one supported core inference model. IBM strongly recommends a guardrail model, while also allowing provider-native guardrail capabilities. Select the supported model and safety approach for your deployment, then restrict backend-to-model traffic with the appropriate network policies, firewall rules, proxy settings, and routing controls. IBM warns that the backend and model services must communicate, but the destinations and ports depend on the selected provider and topology; determine those from the actual service configuration rather than applying a generic allow-list. Consult IBM’s supported-model documentation.
For an air-gapped environment, IBM identifies self-hosted models as an option and documents openai/gpt-oss-20b as a guardrail choice for air-gapped deployments. Treat model support and serving requirements as version-sensitive, and verify that the chosen models and their dependencies fit the intended network boundary.

Build logging, monitoring, and response outside Bob
IBM states that security event logging and monitoring for Bob self-hosted are managed at the OpenShift platform level and are not provided by Bob. The documented Known limitations page also says Activity Logs are absent from the Admin UI. IBM points administrators to OpenShift pod logs for the authentication, authorisation, and admin services, but ordinary service logs should not be represented as a complete security audit trail. Use OpenShift audit and security-event collection together with enterprise monitoring and SIEM controls, and validate which events are captured and retained under your policy. See IBM’s known limitations.
Define the incident process before users rely on Bob. Assign responsibility for containment, credential rotation, model-endpoint response, evidence preservation, and user notification. IBM’s security guidelines also recommend preparing an incident response process for AI-assisted workflows.

Protect workspaces, secrets, and connected tools
- Use
.bobignoreto keep sensitive files and credential material out of Bob’s workspace access. - Review auto-approval settings rather than approving actions indiscriminately.
- Keep secrets out of prompts and files Bob can access.
- Secure MCP servers with authentication and encryption, limit permitted actions, and audit their use.
- Review generated code and commands before applying them.
These are workspace and tool safeguards, not a system-level sandbox. IBM cautions that .bobignore controls Bob’s tools within the current workspace but does not isolate Bob from the system. Use operating-system, container, repository, and platform controls for actual isolation. The recommendations above are described in IBM’s Bob security guidelines.
Account for release lifecycle limitations
IBM’s documented Known limitations page says controlled in-place upgrades are not supported for the release it describes and recommends a fresh installation for a new release. Confirm the applicable release guidance before planning an upgrade or patch cycle; lifecycle instructions and limitations can change between releases. Include the upgrade approach in change management so security fixes and version changes do not depend on an unsupported in-place procedure.
