Treat its endpoint as a capability boundary: a caller may be able to read data, change records, or invoke services using the authority of the authenticated user. “Public” means reachable over a network—not open to anonymous tool execution.
The examples below follow Laravel’s 13.x MCP documentation as reviewed on October 7, 2026. Check your installed Laravel and laravel/mcp versions before copying route or authorization code; package APIs and MCP client behavior can change.

What does it mean to secure a Laravel MCP server?
Secure the identity of each caller, then restrict what that identity can do through every tool. Authentication answers “who is calling?” Authorization answers “may this caller perform this operation on this data?” Both matter because an MCP tool is not just a description presented to a model: it can trigger actions in your application.

Laravel’s 13.x MCP documentation puts the first boundary plainly: “Adding authentication to your MCP server will require a user to authenticate before using any capability of the server.” Authentication belongs on the HTTP MCP route, before tool execution—not only inside a particular handler.

Confirm the transport and versions first
An HTTP MCP server is appropriate when clients connect remotely or the server is hosted as part of a web application. A local stdio server, launched by a local client as a subprocess, has a different network exposure; local stdio examples do not establish that a hosted HTTP endpoint can safely accept anonymous requests. The PHP MCP SDK describes these as distinct transport choices.
Before implementation, identify the Laravel and laravel/mcp versions actually installed. Laravel’s current 13.x documentation describes the patterns below, but exact package APIs and client interoperability are version-sensitive.
Should you use Passport or Sanctum for MCP?
Choose based on who will connect and how those clients manage credentials. Laravel recommends Passport OAuth 2.1 when possible for web-based MCP clients. Sanctum is a reasonable fit when the application already uses it and the clients operate in a controlled environment without a requirement for OAuth.
| Decision factor | Passport OAuth 2.1 | Sanctum |
|---|---|---|
| Typical client setting | Third-party or external MCP clients | Controlled first-party client/server environments |
| How the client authenticates | OAuth flow; Laravel’s integration includes an authorization view where the user can approve or reject a client | Bearer token configured for the controlled client |
| Existing application setup | Useful when Passport is already in use or OAuth interoperability is needed | Useful when the application already uses Sanctum and has no OAuth-specific client requirement |
| Permission granularity in Laravel’s MCP integration | One advertised mcp:use scope; custom scopes are not currently supported |
Enforce fine-grained permissions in the application’s handlers |
| Credential operations | Manage the OAuth client and token lifecycle, including revocation and auditability | Issue a separate scoped token per client where suitable, and manage expiry, rotation, and revocation |
Passport for external clients
Laravel’s documented Passport setup registers MCP OAuth discovery and client-registration routes with Mcp::oauthRoutes(), then protects the MCP route with Passport’s auth:api middleware. This supports an OAuth 2.1 flow that is broadly expected by MCP clients. The limitation is important: Laravel’s integration currently advertises a single mcp:use scope and does not provide custom scopes for dividing access by tool. Enforce distinctions such as “may view” versus “may delete” in your Laravel application instead.
Sanctum for controlled clients
Laravel’s documented Sanctum pattern protects the MCP route with auth:sanctum; the client sends its token in an Authorization: Bearer header. Use a distinct credential for each client where possible, with only the abilities that client needs. Laravel’s production guidance offers 90 days as a reasonable starting point for token expiry, not a required lifetime or universal standard. Set expiry to match your risk and operational needs, and make sure you can rotate or revoke a token promptly.

Custom authentication
Laravel allows custom middleware on an MCP web route. It must do more than notice that a header exists: it must validate the credential, reject invalid or expired credentials, and establish the authenticated user context that handlers will use. At the protocol level, the HTTP MCP server acts as a resource server validating incoming tokens; an authorization server or identity provider issues them.
How do you add authentication to the MCP route?
Attach the chosen authentication middleware to the MCP web route itself. Laravel’s documented route patterns are auth:api with Passport OAuth routes, or auth:sanctum for Sanctum. The route registration API can vary with the installed package version, so check the matching laravel/mcp documentation rather than transplanting an example from a different release.

Mcp::web('/mcp', YourServer::class)
->middleware('auth:sanctum');
// Passport OAuth route registration pattern
Mcp::oauthRoutes();
// Protect the MCP web route with Passport's auth:api middleware.
YourServer::class represents your MCP server class. Treat this as the middleware pattern, not a guarantee that every package release uses identical route signatures. Confirm the method signatures and route registration in your installed version. For Sanctum, configure the client to send its bearer token on every MCP HTTP request. Laravel’s security guidance recommends per-request bearer authentication rather than relying on a session for MCP requests.
How should tools enforce user permissions?
Authentication on the route gives handlers a principal; authorization must still be checked at the operation boundary. Laravel MCP supports conditional tool registration through shouldRegister, which can keep irrelevant capabilities out of a user’s discovery results. That improves the client’s view of available tools, but it does not replace permission checks when a tool runs.
Scope data and check the action
- Use
$request->user()in a handler to obtain the authenticated principal. - Scope queries to records that principal may access; do not accept a record identifier as proof of permission.
- Use Laravel policies or your application’s permission checks before sensitive reads and writes.
- For destructive or high-impact operations, authorize the specific action immediately before performing it.
- Use conditional registration when a user should not discover a capability, and retain handler-level checks even when a tool is hidden.
This distinction matters if a client calls a tool directly, reuses stale tool information, or reaches a handler through another path. Discovery shapes what the client sees; the operation’s authorization check decides what the server actually permits.

How should you limit request volume and impact?
Apply Laravel throttling middleware to the MCP endpoint and choose limits according to the cost and effect of its tools. A cheap read-only lookup and a tool that writes data or triggers a costly downstream service do not have the same risk. Where appropriate, key limits to the authenticated user or token, with an IP-based fallback for requests that have not authenticated. OWASP’s Laravel cheat sheet also documents route-level and custom rate-limiting approaches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Laravel gives 30 requests per minute for a support workflow as an example and advises adjusting limits for read versus write behavior. That is an example, not an independently validated benchmark or a universally safe limit. Consider stricter limits for destructive actions, and account for downstream service quotas as well as your own application capacity.
How should an MCP server handle credentials and errors?
Keep downstream credentials separate
Laravel’s engineering article, “Laravel MCP Server: Auth & Security Best Practices,” dated March 13, 2026, states: “Never forward the token an MCP client sends you to a downstream API.” A client’s credential establishes its authority to your MCP server; it is not automatically a valid credential for another service. Store and use a separate downstream credential with the appropriate audience and permissions. Authenticate every incoming HTTP request, and maintain a process for rotating and revoking credentials.
Return useful errors without exposing internals
Map validation failures and expected business-rule failures to structured responses that explain what the client can correct. For unexpected exceptions, record the details in application monitoring and return a generic error to the MCP client. Do not send stack traces, internal identifiers, or class paths to the client; they can reveal implementation details and lead clients to handle failures incorrectly.
Quick Recap
Security checklist before exposing the endpoint
- Confirm the Laravel and
laravel/mcpversions and use their matching route and middleware APIs. - Require valid authentication on the HTTP MCP route before any capability can run.
- Choose Passport OAuth 2.1 for external clients when appropriate, or Sanctum for a controlled setup that fits it.
- Authorize each tool’s reads and effects using the authenticated user, scoped queries, and policies or permission checks.
- Use conditional tool registration only as a discovery measure, not as a substitute for handler authorization.
- Set request limits based on tool impact, user or token identity, and downstream cost.
- Keep downstream credentials separate from the client’s bearer token; plan for expiry, rotation, and revocation.
- Return structured, non-sensitive errors to clients and keep diagnostic detail in internal monitoring.
