How to Secure a Prometheus Exporter Exposing Fail2ban Metrics

A practical guide to restricting a Fail2ban exporter’s /metrics endpoint, protecting its network path, and limiting access to the Fail2ban Unix socket.

Keep the exporter’s /metrics endpoint reachable only by Prometheus and trusted operators. It is an HTTP service, not a harmless status page: its time series can disclose operational details, and public requests can overload it. Prometheus’s security model advises against exposing component endpoints such as /metrics to the internet without appropriate safeguards: Prometheus Authors’ security model.

What you are securing

A Fail2ban exporter typically reads data from Fail2ban and serves it over HTTP for Prometheus to scrape. The cfuk fail2ban-prometheus-exporter project documents a standalone binary or Docker deployment, a connection to /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock, and an HTTP listener. Its example uses port 9191 and a configurable --web.listen-address; these are project-specific documentation, not universal defaults. Check the documentation for the exact exporter, version, and deployment you run: cfuk fail2ban-prometheus-exporter README.

There are two separate access paths to protect: the exporter’s access to the Fail2ban Unix socket, and network access to its HTTP listener. Securing Prometheus’s own web UI or API does not secure an exporter listening on a different host or port. Prometheus discovers data by scraping HTTP endpoints on its targets, so the monitoring server needs a route to the exporter—but that route need not be open to everyone: Prometheus overview.

Why the endpoint should stay private

The documented metrics include exporter status and error information, jail counts, and current or total banned and failed IP counts by jail. Jail names and activity counts can reveal details about how a system is operated. Access should therefore be limited to the monitoring system and administrators who need it.

The Prometheus Authors warn that public requests can expose information and overload component endpoints, potentially causing denial of service. Their guidance explicitly includes instrumented binaries’ /metrics endpoints: Prometheus security model. Do not publish the listener directly to the internet as a default configuration.

Restrict network reachability

  1. Choose a listener address deliberately. Configure the exporter’s listen address, if supported, to match the intended scrape path. If Prometheus runs on the same host, bind to loopback where the deployment permits it. If it runs elsewhere, use an appropriate private interface rather than a public one. The cfuk exporter documents --web.listen-address, but other exporters may use different flags or configuration: exporter README.
  2. Allow only the scraper’s network identity. Use host firewall, cloud firewall, container network policy, or equivalent controls to permit the Prometheus host or a narrowly scoped monitoring subnet to reach the exporter port. Do not assume that binding to a private address alone limits every route into the host.
  3. Verify the effective listener and route. Check the socket in the actual host or container network namespace and test reachability from the Prometheus server and from an untrusted network. Confirm that Prometheus can scrape successfully while unauthorized clients cannot connect.

Choose protection for the network path

On a same-host or tightly isolated monitoring network, restricted reachability may be the main control. When traffic crosses an untrusted network, protect it with TLS and, where supported, client certificate authentication. Prometheus and many exporters support these approaches, but exact options vary by exporter: Prometheus TLS and HTTPS configuration.

Basic authentication is another possible access control, but credentials sent over a connection without TLS are not protected in transit. Prometheus documents basic authentication through web configuration; verify that the specific exporter supports the relevant web configuration file or flags before applying examples: Prometheus basic authentication and web configuration.

Deployment path Network reachability Transport and identity controls Trade-off
Same host Loopback or a local-only route, if the exporter and scrape setup support it Keep access local; add authentication only if supported and needed Smallest network exposure, but local processes and host configuration still matter.
Private monitoring network Allow only the Prometheus host or restricted monitoring subnet Use an isolated trusted path; consider TLS and client certificates based on the network’s trust level Requires correct firewall and routing rules; an overly broad subnet rule expands access.
Untrusted or public network Avoid direct public reachability; if remote scraping is necessary, restrict the route rather than exposing it openly Use TLS and strong identity controls only where the exporter supports them; do not rely on basic auth without TLS More configuration and certificate lifecycle work; support is exporter-specific.

Limit access to the Fail2ban socket

The exporter’s Unix-socket access is independent of the HTTP listener. Give its process only the permissions needed to read the Fail2ban data. Socket ownership, group membership, and packaging conventions differ across operating systems and installations; the referenced exporter README does not establish a universal least-privilege recipe. Check the local Fail2ban and service configuration, and do not make the socket world-readable as a shortcut.

Review what runs and what it reveals

  • Assess the exporter itself. Prometheus notes that third-party exporters are not all vetted for best practices. Review the source and provenance, release and update process, runtime user, container mounts, and exposed network interfaces. The project README documents usage; it is not an independent security audit or a guarantee of maintenance: Prometheus exporter guidance.
  • Inspect the series and labels. The referenced project documents jail labels and ban or failure counts. Restrict read access to the endpoint and consider what operational information each series reveals before adding more labels or data.
  • Keep the two web configurations separate. Prometheus’s own web configuration does not automatically configure authentication or TLS on an exporter hosted elsewhere. Configure and validate controls on the exporter, its host, and the network path individually.
