How Private Equity Deals Can Affect a Sports Team’s Finances and Operations

Private equity can give a sports team or league access to capital, but the effects depend on where the money enters, what it is contractually meant to fund, and what ownership, voting or future revenue rights the investor receives. A minority investment in a team is not the same as selling a share of league-wide commercial rights. Neither arrangement guarantees better results on the field or a healthier balance sheet over time.

Where does the investment money go?

The deal documents determine whether cash is available to reduce debt, pay for day-to-day operations, or support projects such as facilities. Those uses have different financial effects: paying down existing debt may ease near-term pressure, while operating or infrastructure spending uses capital for current activity or longer-term projects. The money’s stated purpose should not be confused with proof that a project will succeed or that the team will become more profitable.

Nor should a cash contribution be assumed to be a new loan. The examples here describe capital infusions or investment in commercial rights; they do not establish that every private-equity deal adds debt to a team. The relevant documents specify what the investor contributes and what the organization gives in exchange.

Does private equity take control of a team?

Not necessarily. An investor can hold a noncontrolling interest with limited voting rights, while existing owners retain authority over the team. A CFA Institute overview characterizes private-equity positions in U.S. sports leagues as typically noncontrolling and subject to restricted voting rights, but that is an industry-level description, not a rule that applies to every transaction.

Control and economics are separate questions. An investor may receive a financial interest without directing everyday decisions; another agreement may provide a route to a later ownership change. To understand a specific deal, look for the current voting rights, who keeps day-to-day authority, any conditions on future transfers, and whether a later change of control is assured or only possible.

How team-level and league-level deals differ

Deal type Where the capital enters Potential effect What to check
Team-level investment An individual team or its ownership structure May provide capital for debt reduction, operations or projects, depending on the agreement Use of proceeds, voting and control rights, and any future ownership-transfer terms
League-level commercial-rights investment A company or arrangement tied to league rights, such as broadcast rights May generate upfront funding that is allocated among participating clubs; the investor receives an economic interest in the rights vehicle or its revenues Which rights are committed, for how long, how proceeds are allocated, and which clubs participate

A league-level deal can affect individual clubs without making the investor an owner of each club. Its value to a team depends partly on how the league distributes the proceeds and what future income or commercial rights have been committed in return.

What the White Sox agreement illustrates

On June 5, 2025, Major League Baseball reported a long-term investment framework between Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and Justin Ishbia. The announcement said Ishbia would make capital infusions as a limited partner in 2025 and 2026 to pay down existing debt and support ongoing team operations. It also said the Reinsdorf family would continue to control the club, with Reinsdorf remaining its sole day-to-day decision-maker.

The framework described possible paths to a future transfer of control, but said there was no assurance a later transaction would occur. The example shows how a team can receive capital before any control change, while a future transition remains contingent. The announcement does not establish whether the deal improved the team’s sporting or financial performance.

What the La Liga and CVC deal illustrates

Associated Press reporting in February 2024 described CVC’s 2021 La Liga investment as a league-level commercial-rights transaction: CVC held an 8.25% stake in a company managing league TV rights. Participating clubs received allocations used for debt repayment and infrastructure projects, including stadium and training facilities. This was not a straightforward purchase of an individual team. Real Madrid and Barcelona opposed the arrangement and were not part of it; some clubs challenged the deal.

AP quoted Mallorca CEO Alfonso Díaz as saying the club had grown “43% regarding tickets, sponsorship and other income from the stadium” and wanted to grow revenue by around 83% over the next two or three years, with an expectation of doubling revenue compared with before the deal. Those are an executive’s reported figures and forecast, not independent evidence that the CVC transaction caused the growth.

Opposition also concerned the rights exchanged for the funding. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez called the arrangement “a scourge for Spanish football.” That is his stated position, not an objective finding about the deal’s overall value. Such disputes underscore why clubs may disagree over whether upfront cash is worth sharing future commercial income or accepting restrictions on independence.

How league rules can limit the financial choices

Investment does not exempt a club from its competition’s financial rules. The applicable framework depends on the league or governing body, and rules can constrain spending even when a team has received new capital.

Competition framework Relevant controls Threshold and timing
UEFA financial sustainability rules Quarterly checks on overdue payables to clubs, employees, UEFA and public authorities; a football-earnings assessment over three monitoring periods; and a squad-cost rule covering player and coach wages, transfers and agent fees Squad-cost threshold phased from 90% in 2023/24 to 80% in 2024/25, then a permanent 70% of club revenue from 2025/26
Premier League rules Approved Squad Cost Ratio and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience rules; the announced SCR measures on-pitch spending against football revenue and net profit/loss on player sales, with a multi-year allowance and possible levy or sporting sanction SCR threshold of 85% for 2026/27. The league said existing Profitability and Sustainability Rules would remain in place for the rest of 2025/26

These systems are not interchangeable: UEFA’s rules apply within its framework, while Premier League rules govern its clubs. A team considering how to use investment proceeds therefore has to account for the rules that apply to its competition, rather than treating new capital as unrestricted spending capacity.

What a reader should examine in a specific deal

  • Where the investment sits: Identify whether the recipient is a team, its ownership entity, or a league-level company holding commercial rights.
  • What the money is for: Distinguish contractually specified uses—such as debt repayment or facilities—from general operating support.
  • What the investor receives: Check ownership percentage, voting rights, revenue participation and the duration or scope of any rights granted.
  • Who retains authority: Separate an economic stake from voting power, day-to-day decision-making and any contingent route to future control.
  • How proceeds reach teams: For league transactions, check which clubs participate and how allocations are calculated.
  • What rules still apply: Determine the relevant league and governing-body constraints on spending, payables and financial results.
  • What outcomes are actually documented: An announced investment or a club executive’s revenue claim is not, by itself, independent evidence of improved profitability, solvency or wins.

The examples show possible mechanisms and trade-offs, not a general performance result. They do not establish that private equity typically improves wins, profitability or long-term solvency.
