Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can reduce the risk of exposing a repurposed phone or its video feed by using a still-supported, updated handset; limiting the camera app’s permissions; securing its account and your router; and turning off remote viewing if you do not need it. The phone, app, account, network, viewing devices, and camera placement all affect privacy, so treat the setup as a connected security system—not just an old phone pointed at a room.
1. Check that the phone is still suitable
Before installing an app, check the phone’s operating-system version and whether its manufacturer still provides security updates for that exact model. Updates often include security fixes, so a phone that no longer receives them should not be treated as a safe internet-connected camera. Support depends on the model and the manufacturer’s current policy, not simply on how old the phone is. See the FTC’s phone security guidance and camera security guidance.

- Install available operating-system updates and enable automatic updates if the phone offers that option.
- Set a screen lock with a strong passcode. The FTC recommends a passcode of at least six digits.
- Remove personal accounts and data the camera role does not need, such as email, payment apps, messages, and private photos. This limits what someone could access if they get hold of the handset.
2. Choose an app and grant only the access it needs
Install from the official app store and assess the app before relying on it: check who publishes it, its privacy policy, what it says about recordings and storage, how remote access works, what account protections it offers, and whether it is still updated. Do not treat claims such as “local storage” or “no cloud” as a complete security assessment. No particular camera app has been independently tested or ranked here.
Review each permission against a feature you actually plan to use. Camera access is necessary to capture video; microphone access may be needed for audio. Requests for location, contacts, photos or files, local network, or notifications should have a clear explanation relevant to the app’s functions. Deny access you do not need, then check permissions again if you enable more features later.

| Phone | Where to review access | What activity information is available |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Settings → Apps → [camera app] → Permissions. Labels can vary by Android version and phone maker. Google’s permission instructions explain the controls. | On supported versions, Privacy Dashboard shows permission access history. Google documents a seven-day history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12; do not assume other versions have the same history. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions. |
| iPhone | Settings → Privacy & Security, then choose a category such as Camera, Microphone, or Local Network. See Apple’s hardware-access instructions. | A green indicator appears when an app uses the camera; an orange indicator appears when the microphone is used without the camera. App Privacy Report, when enabled, shows how apps use granted permissions and their network activity. See Apple’s app privacy instructions. |
3. Secure accounts and decide whether remote viewing is worth it
If the app uses an account, give it a unique password that you do not use elsewhere. Enable two-factor authentication if the provider offers it; do not assume a particular app supports it without checking its current documentation. Also secure the phone, tablet, or computer you use to view the feed. The FTC recommends strong, unique credentials and two-factor authentication where available in its camera guidance.
Remote viewing adds an account and network route to the household video. If you do not need to check the camera while away, turn remote access off. If you do use it, check how the service protects live and recorded video, limit who can view it, and use HTTPS for web access where applicable. Look for a way to disable remote viewing and for clear information about feed encryption; do not assume either protection exists just because an app offers remote access.

4. Protect the router and consider a separate camera network
Secure the router that connects the phone to the internet: replace default administrator credentials, use a strong Wi-Fi password, install router software updates, enable its firewall, and use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption. The FTC also suggests putting cameras on a separate network from computers and printers. A guest or IoT network can reduce direct access between devices if another device or the main network is compromised, but it does not block every possible attack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check the router maker’s instructions for a guest or IoT network.
- Connect the camera phone to that network and test the camera’s intended viewing and recording features.
- Keep the camera separated if the features work; if they do not, review the router’s isolation settings rather than assuming the network is separate simply because it has a different name.

5. Place the camera with privacy in mind
A secure account does not make every camera angle appropriate. Avoid recording bedrooms, bathrooms, neighbors’ private areas, or other places where people reasonably expect privacy. Tell household members and guests as appropriate. If the phone will not stay aimed, an adjustable smartphone mount can make positioning easier; that is a setup convenience, not a security control.
6. Keep watch for unexpected access
Keep the phone’s operating system and camera app current. Periodically review app permissions and available privacy activity, and check the camera service’s access logs if it provides them. An unfamiliar IP address or access time that does not fit your normal use deserves investigation. The FTC recommends checking camera access logs in its camera guidance.

- Check the router’s connected-device list for devices you do not recognize, and review the camera service’s access history for unfamiliar activity.
These are prudent response steps based on account and access-log guidance; they are not a guarantee that an account or device is clean. CISA explains that encryption helps protect data stored on devices from unauthorized access. Use the phone’s built-in protections and a passcode, and do not assume the app encrypts stored recordings or transmissions unless its current documentation substantiates that claim. See CISA’s device-data guidance.
